Claims
- 1. A washer device, comprising:
a metal washer; a heat-curable adhesive bonding composition pre-applied to a first major surface of said metal washer; and said heat-curable adhesive bonding composition being capable of being cured to bond said first major surface of said metal washer to an external metal substrate when first major surface of said metal washer with said pre-applied heat-curable adhesive bonding composition is brought into intimate contact with said external metal substrate and is subjected to a predetermined heating until said pre-applied heat-curable adhesive composition cures to bond said first major surface of said metal washer and said external metal substrate together.
- 2. The device according to claim 1, wherein:
said heat-curable adhesive bonding composition is resistant to phosphating solutions.
- 3. The device according to claim 1, wherein:
said heat-curable adhesive bonding composition is compatible with cathodic electro-coating.
- 4. The device according to claim 2, wherein:
said heat-curable adhesive bonding composition is compatible with cathodic electro-coating.
- 5. The device according to claim 1, wherein:
said metal washer comprises a steel locating hinge washer; and said external metal substrate comprises a predetermined portion of a hinge assembly.
- 6. The device according to claim 2, wherein:
said metal washer comprises a steel locating hinge washer; and said external metal substrate comprises a predetermined portion of a hinge assembly.
- 7. The device according to claim 3, wherein:
said metal washer comprises a steel locating hinge washer; and said external metal substrate comprises a predetermined portion of a hinge assembly.
- 8. The device according to claim 4, wherein:
said metal washer comprises a steel locating hinge washer; and said external metal substrate comprises a predetermined portion of a hinge assembly.
- 9. The device according to claim 1, wherein:
said heat-curable adhesive bonding composition is cured by a predetermined cathodic electro-coat primer baking thereof.
- 10. The device according to claim 2, wherein:
said heat-curable adhesive bonding composition is cured by a predetermined cathodic electro-coat primer baking thereof.
- 11. The device according to claim 3, wherein:
said heat-curable adhesive bonding composition is cured by a predetermined cathodic electro-coat primer baking thereof.
- 12. The device according to claim 4, wherein:
said heat-curable adhesive bonding composition is cured by a predetermined cathodic electro-coat primer baking thereof.
- 13. The device according to claim 5, wherein:
said heat-curable adhesive bonding composition is cured by a predetermined cathodic electro-coat primer baking thereof.
- 14. The device according to claim 6, wherein:
said heat-curable adhesive bonding composition is cured by a predetermined cathodic electro-coat primer baking thereof.
- 15. The device according to claim 7, wherein:
said heat-curable adhesive bonding composition is cured by a predetermined cathodic electro-coat primer baking thereof.
- 16. The device according to claim 8, wherein:
said heat-curable adhesive bonding composition is cured by a predetermined cathodic electro-coat primer baking thereof.
- 17. The device according to claim 1, wherein:
said pre-applied heat-curable adhesive bonding composition comprises an epoxy annulus having predetermined dimensions to be concentric with said metal washer, but not coterminous therewith, and forming predetermined annular spaces on said first major surface of said metal washer within which annular spaces said epoxy will spread during curing without running over any edge of said metal washer.
- 18. The device according to claim 2, wherein:
said pre-applied heat-curable adhesive bonding composition comprises an epoxy annulus having predetermined dimensions to be concentric with said metal washer, but not coterminous therewith, and forming predetermined annular spaces on said first major surface of said metal washer within which annular spaces said epoxy will spread during curing without running over any edge of said metal washer.
- 19. The device according to claim 3, wherein:
said pre-applied heat-curable adhesive bonding composition comprises an epoxy annulus having predetermined dimensions to be concentric with said metal washer, but not coterminous therewith, and forming predetermined annular spaces on said first major surface of said metal washer within which annular spaces said epoxy will spread during curing without running over any edge of said metal washer.
- 20. The device according to claim 4, wherein:
said pre-applied heat-curable adhesive bonding composition comprises an epoxy annulus having predetermined dimensions to be concentric with said metal washer, but not coterminous therewith, and forming predetermined annular spaces on said first major surface of said metal washer within which annular spaces said epoxy will spread during curing without running over any edge of said metal washer.
- 21. The device according to claim 5, wherein:
said pre-applied heat-curable adhesive bonding composition comprises an epoxy annulus having predetermined dimensions to be concentric with said metal washer, but not coterminous therewith, and forming predetermined annular spaces on said first major surface of said metal washer within which annular spaces said epoxy will spread during curing without running over any edge of said metal washer.
- 22. The device according to claim 6, wherein:
said pre-applied heat-curable adhesive bonding composition comprises an epoxy annulus having predetermined dimensions to be concentric with said metal washer, but not coterminous therewith, and forming predetermined annular spaces on said first major surface of said metal washer within which annular spaces said epoxy will spread during curing without running over any edge of said metal washer.
- 23. The device according to claim 7, wherein:
said pre-applied heat-curable adhesive bonding composition comprises an epoxy annulus having predetermined dimensions to be concentric with said metal washer, but not coterminous therewith, and forming predetermined annular spaces on said first major surface of said metal washer within which annular spaces said epoxy will spread during curing without running over any edge of said metal washer.
- 24. The device according to claim 8, wherein:
said pre-applied heat-curable adhesive bonding composition comprises an epoxy annulus having predetermined dimensions to be concentric with said metal washer, but not coterminous therewith, and forming predetermined annular spaces on said first major surface of said metal washer within which annular spaces said epoxy will spread during curing without running over any edge of said metal washer.
- 25. The device according to claim 9, wherein:
said pre-applied heat-curable adhesive bonding composition comprises an epoxy annulus having predetermined dimensions to be concentric with said metal washer, but not coterminous therewith, and forming predetermined annular spaces on said first major surface of said metal washer within which annular spaces said epoxy will spread during curing without running over any edge of said metal washer.
- 26. The device according to claim 10, wherein:
said pre-applied heat-curable adhesive bonding composition comprises an epoxy annulus having predetermined dimensions to be concentric with said metal washer, but not coterminous therewith, and forming predetermined annular spaces on said first major surface of said metal washer within which annular spaces said epoxy will spread during curing without running over any edge of said metal washer.

- 29. The device according to claim 13, wherein:
said pre-applied heat-curable adhesive bonding composition comprises an epoxy annulus having predetermined dimensions to be concentric with said metal washer, but not coterminous therewith, and forming predetermined annular spaces on said first major surface of said metal washer within which annular spaces said epoxy will spread during curing without running over any edge of said metal washer.
- 30. The device according to claim 14, wherein:
said pre-applied heat-curable adhesive bonding composition comprises an epoxy annulus having predetermined dimensions to be concentric with said metal washer, but not coterminous therewith, and forming predetermined annular spaces on said first major surface of said metal washer within which annular spaces said epoxy will spread during curing without running over any edge of said metal washer.
- 31. The device according to claim 15, wherein:
said pre-applied heat-curable adhesive bonding composition comprises an epoxy annulus having predetermined dimensions to be concentric with said metal washer, but not coterminous therewith, and forming predetermined annular spaces on said first major surface of said metal washer within which annular spaces said epoxy will spread during curing without running over any edge of said metal washer.
- 32. The device according to claim 16, wherein:
said pre-applied heat-curable adhesive bonding composition comprises an epoxy annulus having predetermined dimensions to be concentric with said metal washer, but not coterminous therewith, and forming predetermined annular spaces on said first major surface of said metal washer within which annular spaces said epoxy will spread during curing without running over any edge of said metal washer.
- 33. A method of bonding a first metallic object to a second metallic object, comprising the steps of:
applying a heat-curable adhesive bonding composition to a predetermined percentage of a predetermined metallic surface of said first metallic object; bringing said heat-curable adhesive bonding composition applied to said predetermined metallic surface said first metallic object into intimate contact with a predetermined metallic surface of said second metallic object; and while said intimate contact is maintained, subjecting said applied heat-curable adhesive bonding composition to heat until said adhesive composition cures to bond said predetermined metallic surfaces together.
- 34. The method according to claim 33, wherein:
said heating is accomplished by subjecting said metallic objects and said adhesive composition to cathodic electro-coat primer baking until said adhesive composition cures to bond said predetermined metallic surfaces together.
- 35. The method according to claim 33, wherein:
said adhesive bonding composition maintains an intimate positive contact with said predetermined metallic surfaces during a predetermined heat cycle.
- 36. The method according to claim 34, wherein:
said adhesive bonding composition maintains an intimate positive contact with said predetermined metallic surfaces during a predetermined heat cycle.
- 37. A fabricated tape assembly, comprising:
a release paper backing member; a film of structural epoxy adhesive applied to said release paper backing member; said film of structural epoxy adhesive being cut or perforated into a series of adhesive annuli; said tape assembly being cut or perforated into a series of square tape sections; and each said square tape section containing a predetermined and pre-arranged array of said adhesive annuli.
- 38. A tray device which serves as a shipping tray and an assembly fixture to align a fabricated tape assembly for washers, comprising:
a main tray member divided into a predetermined number of square tray sections; two locating pins being provided in each said square section; and a plurality of posts affixed to said main tray member in each said square tray section.
- 39. The device according to claim 38, wherein:
said fabricated tape assembly comprises a release paper backing member, a film of structural epoxy adhesive applied to said release paper backing member, said film of structural epoxy adhesive being cut or perforated into a series of adhesive annuli, said tape assembly being cut or perforated into a series of square tape sections, and each said square tape section containing a predetermined and pre-arranged array of said adhesive annuli; each said square tape section being placed on two of said locating pins, respectively; said adhesive annuli being placed on said posts; and said washers being placed on top of said adhesive annuli.
- 40. A method of bonding metal surfaces, comprising the steps of:
applying an adhesive epoxy film or tape to a first metal surface of a first object; said adhesive epoxy film or tape is capable of withstanding production phosphating solutions, cathodic electro-coat primer solutions, and/or cathodic electro-primer bake temperatures; bringing said adhesive epoxy film or tape applied to said first object into intimate contact with a second metal surface of a second object; and subjecting said first metal surface, said adhesive epoxy film or tape, and said second metal surface to cathodic electro-coat baking until said adhesive epoxy film or tape cures to bond said first and second metal surfaces together.
- 41. The method according to claim 40, including the step of:
preparing a die-cut cast epoxy film or tape on a release paper backing which is formed into predetermined shapes in accordance with said first metal surface to be bonded.
- 42. The method according to claim 40, including:
using a high strength, heat-curable, pre-applied, low tack, cast structural epoxy film or tape.
- 43. The method according to claim 40, including:
providing said adhesive epoxy film or tape at a defined thickness and shape which is efficient for the bonding of metal substrates as an assembly aid to post processing.
- 44. The method according to claim 40, wherein:
said first object is a washer; said second object is a portion of a hinge assembly; and said method is used in the bonding of said washer to said hinge assembly, to facilitate doors-off, doors-on processing through a trim shop and automotive assembly.
