Claims
- 1. A method of completing a subterranean well, the well having a wellbore intersecting a zone, the method comprising the steps of:
- providing a packer;
- providing a positioning device having upper and lower tubular members, said upper and lower tubular members being disposed in a telescoping relationship to each other, said lower tubular member having inner and outer side surfaces and an opening extending from said inner to said outer side surface of said lower tubular member, and said upper tubular member having an outer side surface, a seal disposed on said outer side surface, and an inner axial flow passage;
- axially compressing said positioning device such that said seal isolates said axial flow passage from said lower tubular member outer side surface, thereby preventing fluid flow inwardly through said opening to said axial flow passage;
- attaching said upper tubular member to said packer;
- providing a tubular screen;
- coaxially disposing said tubular screen in a radially overlying relationship to said lower tubular member, such that said tubular screen radially outwardly overlaps said opening;
- attaching said screen to said lower tubular member;
- providing a perforating gun;
- attaching said perforating gun to said lower tubular member;
- positioning said packer, said positioning device, and said perforating gun within the wellbore, such that said perforating gun is laterally aligned with the zone;
- setting said packer in the wellbore;
- firing said perforating gun, thereby perforating the zone; and
- extending said positioning device to thereby position said tubular screen opposite the zone and permit fluid communication between said opening and said axial flow passage.
- 2. The method according to claim 1, wherein said step of firing said perforating gun and said step of extending said positioning device are performed after said step of setting said packer and before said packer is unset.
- 3. A method of completing a subterranean well, the well having a wellbore intersecting a zone, the method comprising the steps of:
- providing an outer positioning device, said outer positioning device having first and second telescopingly disposed tubular members, said second tubular member radially overlapping said first tubular member, said outer positioning device being configured in an axially compressed configuration thereof;
- providing an inner positioning device, said inner positioning device having upper and lower telescopingly disposed tubular members, said lower tubular member radially overlapping said upper tubular member, said inner positioning device being configured in an axially compressed configuration thereof;
- attaching said outer positioning device to said inner positioning device;
- disposing said outer positioning device and said inner positioning device within the wellbore;
- actuating said outer positioning device to extend to an axially extended configuration thereof; and
- actuating said inner positioning device to extend to an axially extended configuration thereof.
- 4. The method according to claim 3, wherein said step of attaching said outer positioning device to said inner positioning device further comprises the step of coaxially attaching said inner positioning device within said outer positioning device, such that said outer positioning device radially outwardly overlaps said inner positioning device.
- 5. The method according to claim 3, wherein said step of providing said outer positioning device further comprises providing said second tubular member having an inner side surface and an opening formed radially through said second tubular member, said first tubular member having an inner side surface and a seal disposed on an outer side surface of said first tubular member, said seal sealingly engaging said second tubular member inner side surface, and said seal isolating said first tubular member inner side surface from fluid communication with said opening.
- 6. The method according to claim 5, wherein said step of actuating said outer positioning device further comprises actuating said outer positioning device, such that said seal is displaced axially to permit fluid communication between said opening and said first tubular member inner side surface.
- 7. The method according to claim 6, further comprising the steps of:
- providing a screen;
- attaching said screen to said outer positioning device adjacent said opening, and
- wherein said step of actuating said outer positioning device further comprises actuating said outer positioning device to position said screen in the wellbore opposite the zone.
- 8. The method according to claim 7, wherein said step of actuating said inner positioning device further comprises actuating said inner positioning device to position said lower tubular member in a radially inwardly overlapping relationship to said opening.
- 9. The method according to claim 3, further comprising the steps of:
- providing a packer;
- providing a set of gravel packing equipment;
- attaching said gravel packing equipment to said inner and outer positioning devices;
- attaching said packer to said gravel packing equipment;
- setting said packer in the wellbore.
- 10. The method according to claim 9, further comprising the steps of:
- providing a perforating gun;
- attaching said perforating gun to said outer positioning device;
- positioning said perforating gun in the wellbore opposite the zone; and
- firing said perforating gun to perforate the zone.
- 11. The method according to claim 10, wherein said step of actuating said outer positioning device further comprises the step of actuating said outer positioning device to axially displace said perforating gun in the wellbore and position said second tubular member opposite the zone.
- 12. The method according to claim 11, wherein said step of actuating said inner positioning device further comprises the step of actuating said inner positioning device to position said lower tubular member coaxially within said second tubular member.
- 13. A method of completing a subterranean well, the well having a wellbore intersecting a zone, the method comprising the steps of:
- providing first and second positioning devices, each of said first and second positioning devices having first and second coaxially disposed and slidably attached tubular members;
- axially compressing said first and second positioning devices;
- attaching said first and second positioning devices first tubular members to each other, such that said first positioning device is radially outwardly disposed relative to said second positioning device;
- providing a packer;
- attaching said packer to said first and second positioning devices;
- disposing said first and second positioning devices and said packer within the wellbore;
- setting said packer in the wellbore; and
- actuating said first positioning device to dispose said first positioning device second tubular member in the wellbore opposite the zone.
- 14. The method according to claim 13, further comprising the steps of:
- providing a perforating gun;
- attaching said perforating gun to said first positioning device second tubular member;
- laterally aligning said perforating gun with the zone;
- firing said perforating gun to perforate the zone, and
- wherein said step of actuating said first positioning device further comprises axially displacing said perforating gun in the wellbore.
- 15. The method according to claim 14, wherein said step of actuating said second positioning device further comprises the step of actuating said second positioning device to dispose said second positioning device second tubular member coaxially adjacent said first positioning device second tubular member.
- 16. The method according to claim 13, further comprising the steps of:
- providing a tubular screen;
- attaching said tubular screen to said first positioning device second tubular member, and
- wherein said step of actuating said first positioning device further comprises the step of actuating said first positioning device to position said screen in the wellbore opposite the zone.
- 17. The method according to claim 16, further comprising the steps of:
- forming an opening through said first positioning device second tubular member;
- disposing said screen in a radially outwardly overlapping relationship to said opening;
- providing a seal;
- forming an internal flow passage within said first positioning device first tubular member;
- disposing said seal within said first positioning device to sealingly engage said first positioning device first and second tubular members, thereby preventing fluid flow through said opening to said internal flow passage, and
- wherein said step of actuating said first positioning device further comprises the step of displacing said seal to permit fluid flow through said opening to said internal flow passage.
- 18. A method of completing a subterranean well, the well having a wellbore intersecting a zone, the method comprising the steps of:
- positioning a tubular string in the well, the string having a displaceable structure therein and including seperate inner and outer positioning devices disposed between a packer and a perforating gun,
- the outer positioning device being actuatable to elongate the tubular string, and
- the inner positioning device being actuatable to displace the structure within the tubular string;
- firing the gun to perforate the zone; and
- then actuating both of the inner and outer positioning devices.
- 19. The method according to claim 18, wherein in the actuating step, the inner positioning device is inwardly disposed relative to the outer positioning device.
- 20. The method according to claim 18, wherein the tubular string further includes a well screen attached to a portion of the outer positioning device.
- 21. The method according to claim 20, wherein in the actuating step, the well screen is positioned opposite the zone.
- 22. The method according to claim 20, wherein in the actuating step, a portion of the inner positioning device is positioned within the well screen.
- 23. The method according to claim 20, wherein in the actuating step, fluid flow is selectively permitted through a sidewall of the outer positioning device, thereby permitting fluid flow from the zone, through the screen, through the sidewall, and into the tubular string.
