- 11. The method of communicating according to claim 10, further comprising designating with respect to any such return channel of the channel group, and with respect to signalling slots occurring within the frame time period, whether signalling data transmitted within such respective signalling slots in a prior frame have been correctly received by the central station, and whether such signalling slots are reserved in a subsequent frame time period.

- 14. The method of communicating according to claim 10, wherein the channel group comprises the forward channel and only one active return channel, and wherein the step of setting a transmission mode comprises periodically transmitting over the forward channel a return channel descriptor packet of data, and transmitting a binary data flag as part of the return channel descriptor packet of data, which binary data flag selectively sets the transmission mode of the return channels for transmissions by terminals to one of the signalling and messaging transmission modes.
