Claims
- 1. A 4-fluorobiphenyl derivative of formula (VI), ##STR76## wherein R.sup.5 is a halogen atom, or a group represented by R.sup.8 O--, in which R.sup.8 is a hydrogen atom, or an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms; R.sup.6 and R.sup.7 each is a hydrogen atom, or an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms; R.sup.8 and R.sup.6 may form a five- or six-membered ring in combination with the oxygen atom to which each of R.sup.8 and R.sup.6 is bonded; R.sup.8 and R.sup.7 may form a five- or six-membered ring in combination with the oxygen atom to which R.sup.8 is bonded; and X.sup.2 is a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a formyl group, or a group represented by X.sup.3 CH.sub.2 --, in which X.sup.3 is a halogen atom or a hydroxyl group.
- 2. The 4-fluorobiphenyl derivative as claimed in claim 1, wherein R.sup.5 is a group represented by R.sup.8 O--, in which R.sup.8 is a hydrogen atom, or an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms.
- 3. The 4-fluorobiphenyl derivative as claimed in claim 1, wherein R.sup.5 is a halogen atom.
- 4. The 4-fluorobiphenyl derivative as claimed in claim 1, wherein R.sup.6 is a hydrogen atom.
- 5. The 4-fluorobiphenyl derivative as claimed in claim 1, wherein R.sup.6 is an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms.
- 6. The 4-fluorobiphenyl derivative as claimed in claim 1, wherein R.sup.5 is a group represented by R.sup.8 O--, in which R.sup.8 is an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms; R.sup.8 and R.sup.6 form a five- or six-membered ring in combination with the oxygen atom to which each of R.sup.8 and R.sup.6 is bonded.
- 7. The 4-fluorobiphenyl derivative as claimed in claim 1, wherein R.sup.5 is a group represented by R.sup.8 O--, in which R.sup.8 is an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms and R.sup.8 and R.sup.7 form a five- or six-membered ring in combination with the oxygen atom to which R.sup.8 is bonded.
- 8. The 4-fluorobiphenyl derivative as claimed in claim 1, wherein R.sup.7 is a hydrogen atom.
- 9. The 4-fluorobiphenyl derivative as claimed in claim 2, wherein R.sup.8 is an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms.
- 10. The 4-fluorobiphenyl derivative as claimed in claim 1, wherein X.sup.2 is a hydrogen atom.
- 11. The 4-fluorobiphenyl derivative as claimed in claim 1, wherein X.sup.2 is a halogen atom.
- 12. The 4-fluorobiphenyl derivative as claimed in claim 11, wherein said halogen atom is bromine.
