Claims
- 1. In a method of enhancing the effect of administered tumor cell-locating porphyrins in subsequent light irradiation to destroy tumor cells,
- the improvement wherein, in conjunction with treatment of a patient having a tumor susceptible to porphyrin therapy with said porphyrin, there is administered an effect-enhancing amount of an essential fatty acid of the n-6 series or the n-3 series alone or in an acceptable pharmaceutical diluent or carrier, and wherein said porphyrin is HpD or a water-soluble, tumor-locating meso-porphyrin of the formula: ##STR2## wherein R is hydroxy, amino or sulphydryl and n is 1 to 3, alone or in a pharmaceutically acceptable diluent or carrier.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein there is administered from 1 mg to 500 mg of the essential fatty acid and a pharmacologically acceptable and effective amount of said tumor-locating porphyrin within the range of 0.01 to 100 mg/kg based upon a 70 kg adult.
- 3. A pharmaceutical composition comprising an essential fatty acid of the n-6 series or of the n-3 series together with HpD or other tumor locating porphyrin, including water-soluble meso-porphyrins of the formula: ##STR3## wherein R is hydroxy, amino or sulphydryl and n is 1 to 3, alone or in a pharmaceutically acceptable diluent or carrier, for administration to a patient in need of same and subsequent light irradiation to destroy susceptible tumors.
- 4. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 3 in unit dosage form, each dosage unit containing from 1 mg to 500 mg of the essential fatty acid and a pharmacologically acceptable and effective amount of said tumor-locating phorphyrin within the range of 0.01 to 100 mg/kg based upon a 70 kg adult.
