Claims
- 1. A method of treating deficiency of insulin in a patient, comprising administering to a patient in need thereof hedgehog protein in an amount effective to raise the level of insulin in said patient.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein said patient is afflicted with diabetes.
- 3. The method of claim 1, said hedgehog protein being one of desert hedgehog, indian hedgehog, or sonic hedgehog.
- 4. A method of treating deficiency of insulin in a patient, comprising administering to a patient in need thereof a nucleic acid encoding hedgehog protein in an amount effective to raise the level of insulin in said patient.
- 5. The method of claim 4, wherein said patient is afflicted with diabetes.
- 6. The method of claim 4, said hedgehog protein being one of desert hedgehog, indian hedgehog, or sonic hedgehog.
- 7. A method of treating deficiency of insulin in a patient, comprising administering to a patient in need thereof cells expressing hedgehog protein in an amount effective to raise the level of insulin in said patient.
- 8. The method of claim 7, wherein said patient is afflicted with diabetes.
- 9. The method of claim 7, said hedgehog protein being one of desert hedgehog, indian hedgehog, or sonic hedgehog.
- 10. A method of stimulating insulin production in pancreatic -cells, comprising contacting pancreatic β-cells with hedgehog protein so as to permit insulin production from said cells.
- 11. A method of stimulating insulin production in pancreatic β-cells, comprising contacting pancreatic β-cells in vivo with hedgehog protein so as to permit insulin production from said cells.
- 12. The method of claim 10 or 11, said hedgehog protein being one of desert hedgehog, indian hedgehog, or sonic hedgehog protein.
- 13. The method of claim 10 or 11, said pancreatic β-cells being human pancreatic β-cells.
- 14. The method of claim 10 or 11, said pancreatic β-cells being one of mouse, porcine, or bovine pancreatic β-cells.
- 15. A method of modulating IDX-1 gene expression in pancreatic β-cells, comprising contacting pancreatic β-cells with hedgehog protein in an amount effective to modulate IDX-1 gene expression.
- 16. A method of modulating IDX-1 protein in pancreatic β-cells, comprising contacting pancreatic β-cells with hedgehog protein in an amount effective to modulate IDX-1 protein production.
- 17. A method of treating deficiency of IDX-1 in a patient, comprising administering to a patient in need thereof hedgehog protein in an amount effective to raise the level of IDX-1 in said patient.
- 18. The method of claim 17, said hedgehog protein being one of desert hedgehog, indian hedgehog, or sonic hedgehog protein.
- 19. A method of treating deficiency of IDX-1 in a patient, comprising administering to a patient in need thereof a nucleic acid encoding hedgehog protein in an amount effective to raise the level of IDX-1 in said patient.
- 20. The method of claim 19, said hedgehog protein being one of desert hedgehog, indian hedgehog, or sonic hedgehog protein.
- 21. A method of stimulating β-cell neogenesis from β-cell pancreatic ductal precursor cells, comprising contacting β-cell pancreatic ductal precursor cells with hedgehog protein in an amount effective to stimulate neogenesis.
- 22. A method of treating deficiency of pancreatic β-cells in a patient, comprising administering to a patient in need thereof hedgehog protein in an amount effective to stimulate neogenesis from β-cell pancreatic ductal precursor cells.
- 23. The method of claim 22, said hedgehog protein being one of desert hedgehog, indian hedgehog, or sonic hedgehog protein.
- 24. A method of treating deficiency of pancreatic β-cells in a patient, comprising administering to a patient in need thereof a nucleic acid encoding hedgehog protein in an amount effective to stimulate neogenesis from β-cell pancreatic ductal precursor cells.
- 25. The method of claim 24, said hedgehog protein being one of desert hedgehog, indian hedgehog, or sonic hedgehog protein.
- 26. A method of suppressing secretion of insulin in a patient, comprising administering to a patient in need thereof an inhibitor of hedgehog protein in an amount effective to lower the level of insulin in a patient.
- 27. The method of claim 26, wherein said patient is afflicted with hyperinsulinemia.
- 28. The method of claim 26, where said inhibitor of hedgehog protein is cyclopamine or derivatives thereof.
- 29. The method of claim 26, said hedgehog protein being one of desert hedgehog, indian hedgehog, or sonic hedgehog protein.
