Claims
- 1. A methyl substituted-2-oxohexane derivative defined according to the structure: ##STR57## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 can be taken together or are taken separately; and wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are taken together, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 represent oxygen and wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are taken separately R.sub.1 is hydroxyl and R.sub.2 is methyl or R.sub.1 is oxymagnesium halide and R.sub.2 is methyl; and wherein R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6 and R.sub.7 are the same or different hydrogen or methyl with the provisos that:
- (i) the sum of the carbon atoms in R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6 and R.sub.7 is three;
- (ii) when R.sub.7 is methyl, then R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 are each methyl; and
- (iii) when R.sub.7 is hydrogen, R.sub.3 or R.sub.4 is methyl.
- 2. The compound of claim 1 having a structure selected from the group consisting of: ##STR58##
- 3. A compound of claim 1 having a structure selected from the group consisting of: ##STR59##
- 4. A compound of claim 1 having a structure selected from the group consisting of: ##STR60## wherein X is chloro or bromo.
- 5. A compound of claim 1 having a structure selected from the group consisting of: ##STR61##
