Claims
- 1. A fire suppressant comprised of water, and a water immiscible fluid with a boiling point lower than the water mixed with the water to form an emulsion.
- 2. A fire suppressant as in claim 1 further including a surfactant mixed with the noncombustible fluid and water immiscible fluid.
- 3. A fire suppressant as in claim 1 in which the water immiscible fluid is a hexane, heptane, or octane.
- 4. A fire suppressant as in claim 1 in which the water immiscible fluid is combustible.
- 5. A fire suppressant as in claim 1 in which the water immiscible fluid is a chemical fire suppressant.
- 6. A fire suppressant as in claim 1 in which a chemical fire suppressant agent is mixed with the water.
- 7. A fire suppressant as in claim 1 in which the water immiscible fluid has a boiling point of 50° C. or less.
- 8. A mist for suppressing fires comprised of droplets having a non-combustible fluid, a water immiscible fluid with a boiling point lower than the non-combustible fluid embedded in the non-combustible fluid, and a surfactant or cosurfactant.
- 9. A mist for suppressing fires as in claim 8 in which the droplets are an emulsion.
- 10. A mist for suppressing fires as in claim 9 in which the water immiscible fluid is embedded inside of the non-combustible fluid.
- 11. A mist for suppressing fires as in claim 8 in which the non-combustible fluid is water.
- 12. A mist for suppressing fires as in claim 8 in which the water immiscible fluid is oil.
- 13. A mist for suppressing fires as in claim 8 in which the water immiscible fluid is a hexane.
- 14. A mist for suppressing fires as in claim 8 in which the water immiscible fluid is a heptane.
- 15. A mist for suppressing fires as in claim 8 in which the water immiscible fluid is an octane.
- 16. A mist for suppressing fires as in claim 8 in which the water immiscible fluid is combustible.
- 17. A mist for suppressing fires as in claim 8 in which the droplets have a weight comprised of 10 percent or less of the water immiscible fluid.
- 18. A method of atomizing water including the steps of:
a. Combining water with a water immiscible fluid with a boiling point lower than the water and with a surfactant or cosurfactant to form an emulsified liquid; b. Generating a mist of microemulsion droplets from the emulsified liquid; c. Heating the microemulsion droplets to boil the water immiscible fluid and cause the water immiscible fluid to expand and fragment the microemulsion droplets into smaller droplets of water.
- 19. A method of suppressing a fire including the steps of:
a. Providing a fire suppressant comprising an emulsion of water and a water immiscible fluid with a boiling point lower than the water; b. Generating a mist from the fire suppressant; c. Delivering the mist to a hot gas environment for suppression of a fire.
