Claims
- 1. Fiber testing apparatus comprising:a testing chamber, said testing chamber having a moveable wall to vary the volume thereof; a sample-determining system for delivering a predetermined mass of fiber to said testing chamber as a fiber sample; a gas flow system for driving a gas flow through said chamber with at least the gas flow rate and pressure difference measured so as to determine permeability; an actuator driving said movable wall in a substantially continuous manner so as to compress the fiber sample and a transducer for measuring position of said movable wall of said chamber; and a data processing device for acquiring at least gas flow rate, pressure difference, and position data at a sampling rate while said wall is moving.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said data processing device computes “micronaire” of the fiber sample.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said data processing device computes “maturity” of the fiber sample.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said data processing device computes “fineness” of the fiber sample.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said sample determining system delivers a predetermined mass of cotton fiber to said testing chamber.
- 6. A method for determining micronaire, maturity and fineness of a sample of cotton fiber, said method comprising:delivering a predetermined mass of cotton fiber as a fiber sample to a testing chamber which has a movable wall to vary the volume thereof; driving the movable wall in a substantially continuous manner so as to compress the fiber sample while measuring the position of the movable wall and thus the volume of the testing chamber, and driving a gas flow through the chamber while measuring gas flow rate and pressure difference so as to determine permeability; and acquiring gas flow rate, pressure difference, and position data at a sampling rate while the wall is moving, and calculating micronaire, maturity and fineness based on the acquired data.
- 7. The method of claim 6, which further comprises measuring the mass of the fiber sample after measurements have been completed in the testing chamber.
