Claims
- 1. Fibers or filaments comprised of about 4% to about 90% by volume of an ultra-high-molecular-weight polyolefin selected from the group consisting of homopolymers and copolymers of ethylene, propylene and butylene; about 10% to about 96% by volume of a hygroscopic filler having a particle size less than about 10 microns; said fibers or filaments having a void volume greater than about 20%.
- 2. The fibers or filaments of claim 1 which additionally contain between about 1% and about 15% by volume of a plasticizer.
- 3. The fibers or filaments of claim 2 wherein the plasticizer has a solubility parameter between about 7.3 and about 8.4.
- 4. The fibers or filaments of claim 2 wherein the plasticizer is a petroleum hydrocarbon oil.
- 5. The fibers or filaments of claim 1 wherein the filler is a material having surface silanol groups.
- 6. The fibers or filaments of claim 5 wherein the filler is silica.
- 7. The fibers or filaments of claim 1 wherein the filler has a surface area greater than about 30 m.sup.2 /gram.
- 8. The fibers or filaments of claim 1 wherein the polyolefin is polyethylene having an inherent viscosity greater than about 5 dl/gram.
- 9. The fibers or filaments of claim 1 wherein the polyolefin is polyethylene having a nominal weight average molecular weight greater than about 300,000.
- 10. The fibers or filaments of claim 1 wherein the polyolefin is polyethylene having a nominal weight average molecular weight between about 300,000 and about 5 million.
- 11. Microporous fibers or filaments comprised of about 4% to about 90% by volume of an ultra-high-molecular-weight polyolefin selected from the group consisting of homopolymers and copolymers of ethylene, propylene and butylene; about 10% to about 96% by volume of a hygroscopic filler having a particle size less than about 10 microns; said fibers or filaments being microporous due to a plurality of interconnecting interstices that communicate with the outside and inside of the filament or fiber body, the interstices comprising a void volume greater than about 20% of said body.
- 12. The fibers or filaments of claim 1 or claim 11 wherein the ratio of filler to polyolefin is between about 1:1 and about 20:1.
- 13. The fibers or filaments of claim 1 or claim 11 wherein the filler comprises between about 60% and about 96% by volume.
- 14. The fibers or filaments of claim 1 or claim 11 having an average diameter between about 1 and about 10 microns.
