Claims
- 1. A method of activating an aerogel catalyst, comprising:
- exposing an aerogel catalyst comprising a porous refractory metal oxide selected from the group consisting of silica and alumina having a transition metal oxide supported thereon, said transition metal oxide selected from the group consisting of an oxide of iron, cobalt, and nickel to an oxidizing gas containing atomic oxygen or hydroxy radicals at a temperature below about 100.degree. C.; and
- recovering an aerogel catalyst activated by said exposure.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein said temperature is below about 40.degree. C.
- 3. An activated aerogel catalyst obtained by the method comprising the steps of:
- exposing an aerogel catalyst comprising a porous refractory metal oxide selected from the group consisting of silica and alumina having a transition metal oxide supported thereon, said transition metal oxide selected from the group consisting of an oxide of iron, cobalt, and nickel to an oxidizing gas containing atomic oxygen or hydroxy radicals at a temperature below about 100.degree. C.; and
- recovering an aerogel catalyst activated by said exposure.
- 4. The catalyst of claim 3, wherein said temperature is below about 40.degree. C.
