Claims
- 1. An integrated circuit, for monitoring external power supply, which has a predetermined target operating voltage, and providing power management functions to an associated integrated circuit, comprising:
- a voltage comparison circuit, connected to monitor the voltage of the external power supply, and to detect when voltage of the external power supply declines to a first threshold voltage which is less extreme than the target voltage, and to detect when the voltage of the external power supply declines to a second threshold voltage which is less extreme than said first voltage; and
- interrupt generation logic, connected
- to output a pulsed interrupt signal to the associated circuit when said comparison circuit first indicates that the voltage of the external power supply has declined from the target voltage to a first voltage,
- and to output a further pulsed interrupt signal to the associated circuit
- IF a pulse is received from the associated integrated circuit AFTER said comparison circuit has indicated that the voltage of the external power supply has declined from said target voltage to said second voltage
- and ONLY IF said comparison circuit still indicates that the voltage of the external power supply has not thereafter exceeded said first voltage.
- 2. A system, comprising:
- a connection for receiving an external power supply which has a predetermined target operating voltage;
- a complex programmable logic integrated circuit, which has an input for receiving a reset signal and an input for receiving an interrupt signal;
- an input channel, connected to provide data inputs to said complex integrated circuit;
- an output channel, connected so that said complex integrated circuit can provide outputs therethrough to one or more storage devices, communications channel interfaces, processors, and/or users;
- an auxiliary integrated circuit, comprising:
- a voltage comparison circuit, connected to monitor the voltage of the external power supply, and to detect when the voltage of the external power supply declines to a first threshold voltage which is less extreme than the target voltage, and to detect when the voltage of the external power supply declines to a second threshold voltage which is less extreme than said first voltage; and
- interrupt generation logic, connected
- to output a pulsed interrupt signal to the associated circuit when said comparison circuit first indicates that the voltage of the external power supply has declined from the target voltage to said first voltage,
- and to output a further pulsed interrupt signal to the associated circuit
- IF a pulse is received from the associated integrated circuit AFTER said comparison circuit has indicated that the voltage of the external power supply has declined from said target voltage to said second voltage
- and ONLY IF said comparison circuit still indicates that the voltage of the external power supply has not thereafter exceeded said first voltage;
- wherein said auxiliary integrated circuit is connected to both said reset and interrupt inputs of said complex integrated circuit.
- 3. A subsysten, comprising:
- a connection for receiving a system power supply which has a predetermined target operating voltage:
- a microprocessor;
- an auxiliary integrated circuit comprising:
- a local battery;
- a voltage comparison circuit, connected to monitor the voltage of the system power supply, and to detect when the voltage of the system power supply declines to a first threshold voltage which is less extreme than the target voltage, and to detect when the voltage of the system power supply declines to a second threshold voltage which is less extreme than said first voltage; and
- interrupt generation logic, connected
- to output a pulsed interrupt signal to the associated circuit when said comparison circuit fist indicates that the voltage of the system power supply has declined from a target voltage to a first voltage,
- and to output a further pulsed interrupt signal to the associated circuit
- IF a pulse is received from the associated integrated circuit AFTER said comparison circuit has indicated that the voltage of the external power supply has declined from said target voltage to said second voltage
- and ONLY IF said comparison circuit still indicates that the voltage of the external power supply has not thereafter exceeded said first voltage;
- wherein said auxilary integrated circuit is connected to both reset and interrupt inputs of said microprocessor;
- wherein whenever said microprocessor, at power-up, sends a pulse to said auxiliary chip on a predetermined control line, said auxiliary chip responds conditionally to said pulse with a response which is dependent on the voltage level of the system power supply.
- 4. The integrated circuit of claim 1, wherein said voltage comparison circuit monitors the voltage of the external power supply with reference to a bandgap-voltage-reference.
- 5. The integrated circuit of claim 1, further comprising reset control logic, connected to output reset signals to the associated circuit if said comparison circuit indicates that the external power supply voltage has declined to said second voltage.
- 6. The integrated circuit of claim 1, wherein said target voltage is more positive than said first voltage, and said first voltage is more positive than said second voltage.
- 7. The integrated circuit of claim 1, wherein said voltage comparison circuit monitors the voltage of the external power supply with reference to a bandgap-voltage-reference.
- 8. The integrated circuit of claim 1, wherein said voltage comparison circuit monitors the voltage of the external power supply with reference to a reference-voltage source which is a part of said integrated circuit.
- 9. The system of claim 2, wherein said voltage comparison circuit monitors the voltage of the external power supply with reference to a bandgap-reference-voltage source which is a part of said integrated circuit.
- 10. The system of claim 2, wherein said integrated circuit further comprises reset control logic, connected to output reset signals to the associated circuit if said comparison circuit indicates that the external power supply voltage has declined to said second voltage.
- 11. The system of claim 2, wherein said complex integrated circuit is a microprocessor.
- 12. The system of claim 2, wherein said target voltage is more positive than said first voltage, and said first voltage is more positive than said second voltage.
- 13. The system of claim 2, wherein said voltage comparison circuit monitors the voltage of the external power supply with reference to a reference-voltage source which is a part of said integrated circuit.
- 14. The subsystem of claim 3, wherein said target voltage is more positive than said first voltage, and said first voltage is more positive than said second voltage.
- 15. The subsystem of claim 3, wherein said voltage comparison circuit monitors the voltage of the external power supply with reference to a reference-voltage source which is a part of said integrated circuit.
- 16. The subsystem of claim 3, wherein said conditional response is a pulse.
- 17. The subsystem of claim 3, wherein said voltage comparison circuit monitors the voltage of the external power supply with reference to a bandgap-reference-voltage source which is a part of said integrated circuit.
- 18. The subsystem of claim 3, wherein said integrated circuit further comprises reset control logic, connected to output reset signals to the associated circuit if said comparison circuit indicates that the external power supply voltage has declined to said second voltage.
- 19. The integrated circuit of claim 4, wherein said target voltage is more positive than said first voltage, and said first voltage is more positive than said second voltage.
- 20. The integrated circuit of claim 5, wherein said target voltage is more positive than said first voltage, and said first voltage is more positive than said second voltage.
