Claims
- 1. A microscope having an imaging axis for inspecting an endface of an optical fiber in a fiber-optic connector, the fiber-optic connector having multiple fiber-optic endfaces, the microscope comprising:
(a) a tip capable of interfacing with the fiber-optic connector; (b) a slider assembly attached to the tip; (c) a slider chassis for supporting the imaging axis, the slider chassis slidably engaged with the slider assembly, and wherein the slider chassis is capable of moving along an axis of motion to selectively direct the imaging axis of the microscope between adjacent fiber-optic endfaces; and (d) a drive assembly interfaced with the slider assembly and the slider chassis, the drive assembly capable of selectively displacing the slider chassis along the axis of motion to selectively direct the imaging axis of the microscope between adjacent fiber-optic endfaces.
- 2. The microscope of claim 1, wherein the movement between the slider assembly and the slider chassis is substantially constrained to movement only along the axis of motion.
- 3. The microscope of claim 1, wherein the drive assembly includes a cam assembly having a cam, wherein rotation of the cam causes the slider chassis to move along the axis of motion.
- 4. The microscope of claim 3, wherein the cam assembly includes a cam shaft attached to the cam, wherein rotation of the cam shaft causes the cam to rotate and the slider chassis to move along the axis of motion.
- 5. The microscope of claim 3 further comprising an actuator mechanism for remotely rotating the cam.
- 6. The microscope of claim 3, wherein the actuator mechanism for remotely rotating the cam includes an adjustment knob located remotely from the slider assembly and the slider chassis.
- 7. The microscope of claim 3, wherein the cam includes a cam tip and the slider assembly includes a groove for receiving the cam tip, and wherein movement of the slider chassis along the axis of motion is caused by force applied to the slider assembly groove by the cam tip.
- 8. The microscope of claim 4, wherein the cam shaft is mounted substantially parallel to the imaging axis of the microscope.
- 9. The microscope of claim 1, wherein the tip includes a set of surfaces capable of orienting the imaging axis substantially orthogonal to the fiber-optic endface being inspected.
- 10. The microscope of claim 9, wherein the set of surfaces are reflective surfaces.
- 11. The microscope of claim 1, wherein the drive assembly includes an actuator operable by the user to control displacement of the slider chassis by the drive assembly, wherein the actuator is rotatable.
- 12. The microscope of claim 11, wherein rotation of the actuator causes the slider chassis to be moved at a non-linear rate along the axis of motion.
- 13. The microscope of claim 12, wherein rotating the actuator a predetermined angular displacement from a selected starting point causes the slider chassis to be displaced a first selected amount, and wherein rotating the actuator twice the predetermined angular displacement from the selected starting point causes the slider chassis to be displaced more or less than twice the first selected amount.
- 14. The microscope of claim 1, wherein the drive assembly includes an actuator manually movable by a user, wherein movement of the actuator causes the drive assembly to selectively drive the imaging axis of the microscope along the axis of motion.
- 15. A microscope having an imaging axis for inspecting an endface of an optical fiber in a fiber-optic connector, the fiber-optic connector having multiple fiber-optic endfaces, the microscope comprising:
(a) a tip capable of interfacing with the fiber-optic connector; (b) an adjustment assembly attached to the tip, the adjustment assembly adapted to move the imaging axis of the microscope relative to the tip along an axis of motion to selectively align the imaging axis between adjacent fiber-optic endfaces; and (c) a drive assembly interfaced with the adjustment assembly, the drive assembly capable of actuating the adjustment assembly to displace the imaging axis along the axis of motion to selectively align the imaging axis of the microscope between adjacent fiber-optic endfaces.
- 16. The microscope of claim 15, wherein the drive assembly includes an actuator manually movable by a user, wherein movement of the actuator causes the drive assembly to selectively drive the imaging axis of the microscope along the axis of motion.
- 17. The microscope of claim 15, wherein the tip includes a set of surfaces capable of orienting the imaging axis substantially orthogonal to the fiber-optic endface being inspected.
- 18. The microscope of claim 17, wherein the set of surfaces are reflective surfaces.
- 19. The microscope of claim 15, wherein the adjustment assembly includes a slider assembly attached to the tip and a slider chassis slidably engaged with the slider assembly, the slider chassis capable of moving along the axis of motion to selectively direct the imaging axis of the microscope between adjacent fiber-optic endfaces.
- 20. The microscope of claim 19, wherein the sliding motion between the slider assembly and the slider chassis is substantially constrained to movement along only the axis of motion.
- 21. The microscope of claim 19, wherein the drive assembly includes a cam assembly having a cam, wherein rotation of the cam causes the slider chassis to move along the axis of motion.
- 22. The microscope of claim 21, wherein the cam assembly includes a cam shaft attached to the cam, wherein rotation of the cam causes the cam shaft to rotate and the slider chassis to move along the axis of motion.
- 23. The microscope of claim 22, wherein the cam shaft is mounted substantially parallel to the imaging axis of the microscope.
- 24. The microscope of claim 21 further comprising an actuator mechanism for remotely rotating the cam.
- 25. The microscope of claim 24, wherein the actuator mechanism is an adjustment knob located remotely from the slider assembly and the slider chassis.
- 26. The microscope of claim 21, wherein the cam includes a cam tip and the slider assembly includes a groove for receiving the cam tip, and wherein movement of the slider chassis along the axis of motion is caused by force applied to the slider assembly groove by the cam tip.
- 27. The microscope of claim 19, wherein the drive assembly includes an actuator operable by the user to control displacement of the slider chassis by the drive assembly, wherein the actuator is rotatable.
- 28. The microscope of claim 27, wherein rotation of the actuator causes the slider chassis to be moved at a non-linear rate along the axis of motion.
- 29. The microscope of claim 28, wherein rotating the actuator a predetermined angular displacement from a selected starting point causes the slider chassis to be displaced a first selected amount and rotating the actuator twice the predetermined angular displacement from the selected starting point causes the slider chassis to be displaced more or less than twice the first selected amount.
- 30. A method for inspecting each fiber-optic endface in a multi-fiber connector with a microscope, the multi-fiber connector including a linear array of optical fibers, the method comprising:
(a) interfacing a tip of the microscope with the multi-fiber connector such that the tip remains substantially stationary relative to the connector during inspection; (b) directing an image axis of the microscope upon a selected one of the fiber-optic endfaces to inspect the selected fiber-optic endface; and (c) actuating a drive assembly to linearly drive the imaging axis of the microscope along an axis of motion from alignment with the selected one of the fiber-optic endfaces to alignment with another fiber-optic endface of the multi-fiber connector.
- 31. The method of claim 30, further including manually moving an actuator of the drive assembly, wherein the movement of the actuator causes the drive assembly to selectively drive the imaging axis of the microscope along the axis of motion.
- 32. The method of claim 31, wherein movement of the actuator causes a slide chassis supporting the imaging axis to slide relative to the tip, wherein the movement of the slide chassis relative to the tip is substantially constrained to linear movement along the axis of motion.
