Claims
- 1. In a method for expressing volatilizable components from a mixture containing volatilizable components, the improvement comprising the steps of:
- providing a material having a mixture of volatile organic compounds and a microwave absorbing compound therein;
- contacting said mixture with microwave energy;
- vaporizing a microwave absorbing compound; and
- volatilizing at least one volatile organic compound contained in said mixture by absorption of energy from vaporized microwave absorbing compound.
- 2. The method as defined in claim 1, further including the step of exposing said mixture to said microwave energy while centrifuging for 15 seconds.
- 3. The method as defined in claim 2, further including the step of centrifuging said mixture in the absence of microwave exposure.
- 4. The method as defined in claim 3, further including exposing said mixture to microwave energy for 15 seconds.
- 5. The method as defined in claim 4, further including the step of centrifuging said mixture for a period of 5 seconds.
- 6. The method as defined in claim 1, wherein said microwave absorbing compound comprises a compound which absorbs microwave energy preferentially to said volatile organic compounds in said mixture.
- 7. The method as defined in claim 6, wherein said microwave absorbing compound comprises water.
- 8. The method as defined in claim 1, further including the step of rehydrating said mixture.
- 9. The method as defined in claim 6, further including the step of rehydrating said mixture.
- 10. The method as defined in claim 7, further including the step of rehydrating said mixture.
- 11. The method as defined in claim 6, wherein said microwave absorbent compound comprises soil containing moisture.
- 12. The method as defined in claim 11, further including the step of rehydrating said soil.
- 13. The method as defined in claim 1, wherein said mixture is present in inlet means of an analytical instrument prior to contact with microwave energy.
- 14. In a method for expressing volatilizable components from a material containing said volatilizable components, the improvement comprising:
- providing a material which includes at least two phases selected from solid, liquid and gas phases;
- exposing said material to microwave energy to effect volatilization of at least one of said volatilizable components; and
- separating at least one volatilized component from said material.
- 15. The method as defined in claim 14, wherein said material includes both a liquid and a solid phase.
- 16. The method as defined in claim 15, wherein said material comprises a hollow tube having a liquid layer.
- 17. The method as defined in claim 16, wherein said hollow tube comprises a hollow fibre.
- 18. The method as defined in claim 13, wherein said hollow fibre comprises a micro-fibre capillary tube.
- 19. In a method for expressing volatilizable components from a vessel containing said volatilizable components, the improvement comprising:
- providing a hollow vessel which includes at least two phases selected from solid, liquid and gas phases;
- exposing said vessel to microwave energy to effect volatilization of at least one of said volatilizable components; and
- recovering at least one volatilized component from said hollow vessel.
- 20. The method as defined in claim 19, further including the step of centrifuging said vessel while exposing said vessel to microwave energy.
- 21. The method as defined in claim 19, further including the step of centrifuging said vessel in the absence of microwave energy exposure.
- 22. The method as defined in claim 19, further including the step of adding a microwave absorbing species to said vessel prior to exposure to microwave energy.
- 23. The method as defined in claim 19, wherein said vessel comprises inlet means of an analytical instrument.
