- 9. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the pivotal connection of the stem is such that when the lid is in an upright position and no external force urges the stem toward the lower side of the lid, the stem is in the second position.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the activator comprises a leg attached to the lower side of the lid.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the leg is formed from a material relatively rich in nucleation sites.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 10, further comprising a material attached to the leg, the material being relatively rich in nucleation sites.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the activator further comprises a flexible extension member having a first end and a second end, the first end attached to the lid and the second end attached to a sinker, the sinker having a specific gravity greater than that of water.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the sinker is formed from a material relatively rich in nucleation sites.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 13, further comprising a material attached to the sinker, the material being relatively rich in nucleation sites.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 2, further comprising a gasket attached to the lower side of the lid.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 2, further comprising a weight secured to lid.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 2, further comprising a cup, the lid being removably placed atop the cup.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the lid forms a seal between the lid and the cup so that when steam is generated by a liquid heated within the cup, the steam escapes through the whistle, causing the whistle to emit an audible noise.
- 20. A food preparation apparatus, comprising:
a lid having an upper side and a lower side; an alarm attached to the lid; and a means for facilitating boiling attached to the lid and extendable beneath the lower side of the lid.
- 21. The apparatus of claim 20, further comprising a means for sealing the lower side of the lid to a cup to prevent the escape of steam from the seal when a liquid within the cup is heated.
- 22. A food preparation apparatus, comprising:
a lid having an upper side, a lower side, and at least one circumferential ridge protruding from the lower side, the circumferential ridge configured to prevent the lid from falling off a vessel when the lid is secured atop the vessel; an audible apparatus attached to the lid; and an extendable member fastened to the lid, the extendable member extending into the vessel.
- 23. The apparatus of claim 22, wherein the vessel comprises a base and an open rim, and further wherein the extendable member extends approximately mid-way between the base and the rim when the lid is secured atop the vessel.
- 24. A microwaveable food or beverage package, comprising:
an alarm secured to the package, the alarm configured to emit a noise when the contents of the package are heated.
- 25. The package of claim 24, wherein the alarm is activated by steam.
- 26. The package of claim 24, wherein the alarm comprises a whistle in communication with an internal portion of the package, such that steam generated by heating of the package contents is allowed to escape through the whistle, causing the whistle to emit the noise.
- 27. The package of claim 26, wherein the package comprises a cup and the contents of the package comprises a beverage.
- 28. The package of claim 26, wherein the contents of the package comprises a food item.
- 29. The package of claim 24, wherein the package further comprises a chamber containing ice or water, and wherein the alarm comprises a whistle in communication with the chamber, such that steam generated by heating of the ice or water is allowed to escape through the whistle, causing the whistle to emit the noise.
- 30. A food preparation apparatus, comprising:
a microwaveable vessel; a lid attached to the vessel, the lid having an upper side and a lower side; a microwaveable alarm attached to the lid; and a boiling facilitator attached to the apparatus and extending into an interior of the vessel.
- 31. The apparatus of claim 30, wherein the vessel is formed from glass.
- 32. The apparatus of claim 30, wherein the boiling facilitator is attached to the lid and extends downwardly into the vessel when the lid is attached to the vessel.
- 33. The apparatus of claim 32, wherein the vessel further comprises an inner surface, the inner surface being configured to provide nucleation sites.
- 34. The apparatus of claim 32, wherein the vessel further comprises an inner surface, the inner surface being textured.
- 35. A food preparation apparatus, comprising:
