Claims
- 1. A microwave electron gun for generating an electron beam to be accelerated by a microwave electric field in an accelerating tube having a series of cavities, comprising:
- a cathode made of lanthanum hexaboride for the emission of electrons;
- a pair of carbon electrodes fused to said cathode behind its electron-emitting surface;
- a pair of electrode bars between one end of which said cathode and carbon electrodes are clamped;
- an insulating block to which the other end of said electrode bars are attached; and
- a pair of terminal bolts for securing said electrode bars to said insulating block, and for conveying electrical current to said electrode bars.
- 2. The microwave electron gun according to claim 1, further comprising:
- a bolt inserted through one of said pair of electrode bars and screwed into the other, for maintaining clamping pressure; and
- an insulating collar for insulating a head end of said bolt from the electrode bar through which it is inserted.
- 3. The microwave electron gun according to claim 1, further comprising a plurality of insulating bearings disposed in depressions of said electrode bars near the end at which said electrode bars clamp said cathode and said carbon electrodes.
- 4. The microwave electron gun according to claim 3, in which said insulating bearings are made of a ceramic material.
- 5. A microwave electron gun for generating an electron beam to be accelerated by a microwave electric field in an accelerating tube having a series of cavities, comprising:
- an electron-gun cavity, this being the first of said series of cavities in said accelerating tube, the upstream wall of which comprises a protruding part surrounding an entrance opening, and the downstream wall of which comprises a flat part surrounding an exit opening;
- a sleeve leading from said entrance opening in said electron-gun cavity to near a front end of said accelerating tube;
- a cathode tube disposed in said sleeve, with a gap between said cathode tube and said sleeve, comprising a cathode made of lanthanum hexaboride disposed at said entrance opening for the emission of electrons, a pair of carbon electrodes fused to said cathode behind its electron-emitting surface, a pair of electrode bars between one end of which said cathode and carbon electrodes are clamped, an insulating block to which the other end of said electrode bars are attached, and a pair of terminal bolts for securing said electrode bars to said insulating block, and for conveying electrical current to said electrode bars; and
- a disk-shaped choke cavity extending from said sleeve, perpendicular to and surrounding said cathode tube, disposed at a distance equal to one quarter-wavelength of the accelerating microwave radiation from said cathode and also extending from said cathode tube by one quarter-wavelength.
