Claims
- 1. In a method for the minimization of carryover between successive discrete sample liquids in a sample liquid container comprising means defining a container bore, the improvements comprising, the steps of, introducing an isolation liquid to a sample liquid container bore, flowing isolation liquid through said container bore to cover walls of the container bore with a layer of isolation liquid and selectively wet said container bore walls to the substantial exclusion of sample liquids and substantially prevent contact by sample liquids with said container bore walls, successively introducing discrete sample liquids to said container bore, successively flowing the thusly introduced discrete sample liquids through said container bore and therefrom, and introducing each succeeding discrete sample liquid to said container bore for flow therethrough only after the precedingly introduced discrete sample liquid has flowed completely through said container bore whereby, carryover between discrete sample liquids by the contamination of a succeeding discrete sample liquid by the residue of a preceding discrete sample liquid in said container bore is minimized.
- 2. In a method as in claim 1, the improvements further comprising, the steps of, successively flowing discrete sample liquids through said container bore substantially under the force of gravity.
- 3. In a method as in claim 1, the improvements further comprising, the steps of, flowing isolation liquid through said container bore substantially under the force of gravity.
- 4. In a method as in claim 1, the improvements further comprising, the steps of, discontinuing the flow of each discrete sample liquid in turn through said container bore to retain each discrete sample liquid in turn therein.
- 5. In a method as in claim 1, the improvements further comprising, the steps of, maintaining said container bore at substantially ambient atmospheric pressure.
- 6. In a method as in claim 1, the improvements further comprising, the steps of, introducing isolation liquid to said container bore by oozing isolation liquid thereinto substantially around the entire periphery of said container bore.
- 7. In a method as in claim 1, the improvements further comprising, the steps of, introducing isolation liquid to said container bore independently of the successive introductions of discrete sample liquids thereto.
- 8. In a method as in claim 1, the improvements further comprising, the steps of, successively introducing discrete sample liquids to said container bore substantially under the force of gravity.
- 9. In a method as in claim 1 wherein the isolation liquid is immiscible with the discrete sample liquids, the improvements further comprising, the steps of, encapsulating discrete sample liquids in turn in isolation liquid to form a stream of isolation liquid-encapsulated discrete sample liquids, and flowing the stream from said container bore through operatively connected container bore outlet conduit means to cover walls of the outlet conduit means with a layer of isolation liquid and selectively wet the walls with isolation liquid to the substantial exclusion of discrete sample liquids and substantially prevent contact by discrete sample liquids in the stream with said outlet conduit means walls whereby, carryover between discrete sample liquids in said outlet conduit means by the contamination of a succeeding discrete sample liquid by the residue of a preceding discrete sample liquid is minimized.
- 10. In a method as in claim 9, the improvements further comprising, the steps of, communicating said container bore with the ambient air, and introducing a quantity of ambient air from said container bore into the isolation liquid-encapsulated stream of discrete sample liquids following each discrete sample liquid therein thereby air-segmenting the stream whereby, carryover between discrete sample liquids in said container outlet conduit means is further minimized.
- 11. In a method for the successive analyses of discrete sample liquids with minimum carryover therebetween through use of a sample liquid container comprising means defining a container bore, the improvements comprising, the steps of, introducing an isolation liquid to a sample liquid container bore, flowing isolation liquid through said container bore to cover walls of the container bore with a layer of isolation liquid and selectively wet said container bore walls to the substantial exclusion of sample liquids and sample processing liquids and substantially prevent contact by sample liquids and sample processing liquids with said container bore walls, successively introducing discrete sample liquids to said container bore, introducing a sample liquid processing liquid to said container bore concomitantly with the introduction of each discrete sample liquid thereto to mix the sample and sample processing liquids therein, successively flowing the thusly introduced and mixed sample and sample processing liquids through said container bore, and introducing each succeeding discrete sample liquid and sample processing liquid to said container bore for flow therethrough only after the precedingly introduced discrete sample liquid and sample processing liquid have flowed completely through said container bore whereby, carryover between discrete sample liquids by the contamination of a succeeding discrete sample liquid by the residue of preceding discrete sample liquid in said container bore is minimized.
- 12. In a method as in claim 11, the improvements further comprising, the steps of, introducing discrete sample liquids and sample processing liquid to said container bore substantially under the force of gravity.
- 13. In a method as in claim 11, the improvements further comprising, the steps of, flowing isolation liquid, discrete sample liquids, and sample processing liquid, respectively, through said container bore substantially under the force of gravity.
- 14. In a method as in claim 11 wherein the isolation liquid is immiscible with the discrete sample liquids and the sample processing liquid, the improvements further comprising, the steps of, encapsulating mixed discrete sample and sample processing liquids in turn in isolation liquid to form a stream of isolation liquid-encapsulated mixed discrete sample and sample processing liquids, and flowing the stream through operatively connected container bore outlet conduit means to cover walls of the conduit means with a layer of isolation liquid and selectively wet the walls with isolation liquid to the substantial exclusion of mixed discrete sample and sample processing liquids and substantially prevent contact thereby with said outlet conduit means walls, and successively analyzing mixed discrete sample and sample processing liquids in the isolation liquid-encapsulated stream whereby, carryover between discrete sample liquids in said outlet conduit means by the contamination of a succeeding discrete sample liquid by the residue of a preceding discrete sample liquid is minimized, and the accuracy of the analysis results maximized.
- 15. In a method as in claim 14, the improvements further comprising, the steps of, communicating said container bore with the ambient air upon the completion of the flow of mixed discrete sample and sample processing liquids therethrough in each instance, and introducing a quantity of ambient air from said container bore into the isolation liquid-encapsulated mixed discrete sample and sample processing liquids stream following each of the mixed discrete sample and sample processing liquids therein thereby air-segmenting the stream whereby, carryover between discrete sample liquids in said outlet conduit means is further minimized, and the accuracy of the analysis results is further maximized.
- 16. In a method as in claim 11, the improvements further comprising, the steps of, discontinuing the flow of each discrete sample liquid and processing liquid in turn through said container bore to retain discrete sample liquid and processing liquid in turn therein.
- 17. In a method as in claim 16, the improvements further comprising, the steps of, analyzing mixed discrete sample and sample processing liquids in turn in said container bore upon the retention of the sample and sample processing liquids therein whereby, the accuracy of the analysis results is maximized.
- 18. In a method as in claim 16, the improvements further comprising, the steps of, immersing analysis means in mixed sample and sample processing liquids in turn in said container bore upon the retention of the sample and sample processing liquids therein, and analyzing mixed sample and sample processing liquids therein whereby, the accuracy of the analysis results is maximized.
- 19. In a method as in claim 16, the improvements further comprising, the steps of, introducing discrete sample liquids and sample processing liquid to said container bore through container bore inlet means, withdrawing portions mixed discrete sample and sample processing liquids in turn through said container bore inlet means upon the retention thereof in said container bore, and analyzing the thusly withdrawn mixed discrete sample and sample processing liquid portions in turn thereby, the accuracy of the analysis results is maximized.
- 20. In a method as in claim 16, the improvements further comprising, the steps of, flowing discrete sample liquids and sample processing liquid through said container bore substantially under the force of gravity.
