Claims
- 1. A device for mixing a fluid comprising:
a shaft extending along an axis; a support mounted for rotation by said shaft; and a number of vanes mounted for rotation by said support, said vanes extending generally parallel to said axis and spaced outwardly therefrom, each vane having an outer edge and an inner edge, each vane extending inwardly towards said axis to said inner edge a distance of no more than about 0.4 of the distance from said outer edge of said vane to said axis at said first end of said vane, and extending inwardly a greater distance at said second end than said first end, one or more of said vanes spaced apart by about 0.3 in at least one area there between for trapping globules of material moving through said device.
- 2. The device in accordance with claim 1 wherein said support has a generally circular outer perimeter and vanes have a length between about 1 and 2 times a diameter of said support.
- 3. The device in accordance with claim 1 wherein one or more of said vanes are curved between their inner and outer edges.
- 4. The device in accordance with claim 1 wherein said support has a diameter of less than about one inch.
- 5. The device in accordance with claim 1 wherein said vanes have an inner edge which slopes between said first and second ends.
- 6. A device for mixing a fluid comprising:
a shaft extending along an axis; a support mounted for rotation by said shaft; and a number of vanes mounted for rotation with said support, said vanes having a first end and a second end, said second ends positioned outwardly of said support in a direction generally parallel to said axis to define an open first end, said vanes positioned radially outward from said axis, said vanes having an outer edge and an inner edge, said inner edge of said vanes sloping from said second end to said first end in a direction towards said axis, and at least a portion of said inner edge of said vanes extending inwardly towards said axis no more than about 0.3 of the distance between the outer edge of said vanes and said axis for shearing fluid as it passes through said vanes, shearing and dispersing particulate material within said fluid, thereby homogenizing said fluid.
- 7. The device in accordance with claim 6 wherein said support comprises a plate having a first side and a second side, and wherein said vanes extend from said first side.
- 8. The device in accordance with claim 7 wherein vanes also extend from said second side of said plate.
- 9. The device in accordance with claim 6 wherein one or more of said vanes are curved between said inner and outer edges.
- 10. A device for mixing a fluid comprising:
a shaft extending along an axis; a support mounted for rotation by said shaft; and a number of vanes mounted for rotation with said support, said vanes having a first end and a second end, said second ends positioned outwardly of said support in a direction generally parallel to said axis to define an open first end, said vanes positioned radially outward from said axis, said vanes having an outer edge and an inner edge, said inner edge of said vanes sloping from said second end to said first end in a direction towards said axis, one or more of said vanes spaced no more than about 0.3 inches apart for straining undispersable materials with said vanes during said rotating step.
- 11. The device in accordance with claim 10 wherein said support comprises a plate having a first side and a second side, and wherein said vanes extend from said first side.
- 12. The device in accordance with claim 11 wherein one or more of said vanes also extend from said second side of said plate.
- 13. The device in accordance with claim 10 wherein one or more of said vanes are curved between said inner and outer edges.
- 14. A device for mixing a fluid comprising:
a shaft extending along an axis; a support mounted for rotation by said shaft; and a number of vanes mounted for rotation with said support, said vanes having a first end and a second end, said second ends positioned outwardly of said support in a direction generally parallel to said axis, said vanes positioned radially outward from said axis, said vanes having an outer edge and an inner edge, said inner edge of said vanes sloping from said second end to said first end in a direction towards said axis, said inner edge of said vanes at said second end extending inwardly towards said axis no more than about 0.4 of the distance between the outer edge of said vanes and said axis and extending inwardly towards said axis no more than about 0.7 at said first end, whereby said fluid reaches a high radial velocity and is sheared as it impacts said vanes, and whereby a surface area of said vanes is enlarged at one or more areas thereof, providing for an increased fluid flow and mixing rate.
- 15. The device in accordance with claim 14 wherein said support comprises a plate having a first side and a second side, and wherein said vanes extend from said first side.
- 16. The device in accordance with claim 15 including one or more vanes also extending from said second side of said plate.
- 17. The device in accordance with claim 14 wherein one or more of said vanes are curved between said inner and outer edges.
- 18. A device for mixing a fluid comprising:
a shaft extending along an axis; a support mounted for rotation by said shaft; and a number of vanes mounting for rotation with said support, said vanes having a first end and a second end, said second ends positioned outwardly of said support in a direction generally parallel to said axis, said vanes positioned radially outward from said axis and defining an interior space, said vanes having an outer edge and an inner edge, said inner edge of said vanes extending inwardly towards said axis at one or more locations a greater distance than at one or more other locations, said outer edge of said vanes positioned no more than about one inch from said axis, and said vanes having a length greater than a distance from said outer edges to said axis, whereby a surface area of said vanes is enlarged at one or more areas thereof, providing for an increased fluid flow and mixing rate, and whereby undispersable materials are strained by said vanes and trapped in said interior space.
- 19. The device in accordance with claim 18 wherein said support comprises a generally circular plate.
- 20. The device in accordance with claim 18, wherein said inner edges of said vanes slope from said first to said second end.
- 21. A device for mixing a fluid comprising:
a shaft extending along an axis; a support mounted for rotation by said shaft; and a number of vanes having a first end and a second end, said vanes having an outer edge and an inner edge, said vanes positioned radially outward from said axis and mounted for rotation with said support, said first ends of said vanes defining a first opening there between and said second ends defining a second opening there between, said first opening being larger than said second opening, said inner edge of one or more of said vanes extending inwardly toward said axis no more than about 0.3 of the distance between the outer edge of said vane and said axis for shearing fluid as it passes through said vanes, shearing and dispersing particulate material within said fluid, thereby homogenizing said fluid.
- 22. The device in accordance with claim 21 wherein said support comprises a generally circular plate.
- 23. The device in accordance with claim 21 wherein said inner edge of one or more of said vanes slope toward said axis moving in a direction from said first end to said second end of said vane.
- 24. A device for mixing fluid comprising:
a shaft extending along an axis; a support mounted for rotation by said shaft; and a number of vanes mounted for rotation with said support, said vanes having a first end and a second end, said vanes having an outer edge and an inner edge, said inner edge of one or more of said vanes positioned closer to said axis at said first end than at said second end thereof, at least a portion of said inner edge of one or more of said vanes extending inwardly toward said axis no more than about 0.3 of the distance between the outer edge of said vane and said axis, said device having at least one generally open end into which fluid may be drawn into an interior space defined at least in part by said vanes for shearing fluid as it passes through said vanes, shearing and dispersing particulate material within said fluid, thereby homogenizing said fluid.
- 25. The device in accordance with claim 24 wherein said vanes extend in a direction generally along said axis.
- 26. The device in accordance with claim 24 wherein said support is generally positioned in a plane and said vanes extend away from said support in at least one direction generally perpendicular to said plane.
- 27. A device for mixing fluid comprising:
a shaft extending along an axis; a support mounted for rotation by said shaft; and a number of vanes mounted for rotation with said support, said vanes having a first end and a second end, said vanes having an outer edge and an inner edge, one or more of said vanes having a portion of said inner edge at said first end thereof extending inwardly towards said axis a first distance and a portion at other than said first end extending inwardly towards said axis a second distance greater than said first distance, said inner edge of one or more of said vanes extending inwardly toward said axis no more than about 0.3 of the distance between the outer edge of said vane and said axis, said device having at least one generally open end into which fluid may be drawn into an interior space defined at least in part by said vanes for shearing fluid as it passes through said vanes, shearing and dispersing particulate material within said fluid, thereby homogenizing said fluid.
- 28. The device in accordance with claim 27, wherein said support comprises a generally circular plate.
- 29. The device in accordance with claim 27, wherein one or more of said vanes are spaced no more than 0.3 inches apart.
- 30. A device for mixing fluid comprising:
a shaft extending along an axis; a support mounted for rotation by said shaft; and a number of vanes having a first end and a second end, said vanes positioned radially outward from said axis and mounted for rotation with said support, said first ends of said vanes defining a first opening there between and said second ends defining a second opening there between, said first opening being larger than said second opening, and portions of one or more of said vanes positioned no more than about 0.3 inches apart for straining undispersable materials with said vanes during said rotating step.
- 31. The device in accordance with claim 30 wherein said vanes have an inner edge, said inner edge of one or more of said vanes sloping inwardly towards said axis in a direction from said first end to said second end.
- 32. The device in accordance with claim 30 including the step of providing vanes which are curved between an inner edge and an outer edge thereof.
- 33. A device for mixing fluid comprising:
a shaft extending along an axis; a support mounted for rotation by said shaft; and a number of vanes mounted for rotation with said support, said vanes having a first end and a second end, said vanes having an outer edge and an inner edge, said inner edge of one or more of said vanes positioned closer to said axis at said first end than at said second end thereof, and portions of one or more of said vanes positioned no more than about 0.3 inches apart; said device having at least one generally open end into which fluid may be drawn into an interior space defined at least in part by said vanes for straining undispersable materials with said vanes during said rotating step.
- 34. The device in accordance with claim 33 wherein said inner edge of one or more of said vanes slope inwardly towards said axis moving in a direction from said second end to said first end of said vane.
- 35. A device for mixing fluid comprising:
a shaft extending along an axis; a support mounted for rotation by said shaft; and a number of vanes mounted for rotation with said support, said vanes having a first end and a second end, said vanes having an outer edge and an inner edge, one or more of said vanes having a portion of said inner edge at said first end thereof extending inwardly towards said axis a first distance and a portion at other than said first end extending inwardly towards said axis a second distance greater than said first distance, and portions of one or more of said vanes positioned no more than about 0.3 inches apart; said device having at least one generally open end into which fluid may be drawn into an interior space defined at least in part by said vanes for straining undispersable materials with said vanes during said rotating step.
- 36. The device in accordance with claim 35, wherein said support comprises a generally circular plate.
- 37. A device for mixing fluid comprising:
a shaft extending along an axis; a support mounted for rotation by said shaft; and a number of vanes having a first end and a second end, said vanes positioned radially outward from said axis and mounted for rotation with said support, said first ends of said vanes defining a first opening there between and said second ends defining a second opening there between, said first opening being larger than said second opening, said inner edge of said vanes at said first end extending inwardly towards said axis no more than about 0.4 of the distance between the outer edge of said vanes and said axis and extending inwardly towards said axis no more than about 0.7 of the distance between the outer edge of said vanes and said axis at said second end whereby a fluid being mixed reaches a high radial velocity and is sheared as it impacts said vanes, and whereby a surface area of said vanes is enlarged at one or more areas thereof, providing for an increased fluid flow and mixing rate.
- 38. The device in accordance with claim 37, wherein one or more of said vanes are spaced no more than 0.3 inches apart.
- 39. A device for mixing fluid comprising:
a shaft extending along an axis; a support mounted for rotation by said shaft; and a number of vanes mounted for rotation with said support, said vanes having a first end and a second end thereof, said vanes having an outer edge and an inner edge, said inner edge of one or more of said vanes positioned closer to said axis at said first end than at said second end, said inner edge of said vanes at said second end extending inwardly towards said axis no more than about 0.4 of the distance between the outer edge of said vanes and said axis and extending inwardly towards said axis no more than about 0.7 of the distance between said outer edge of said vanes and said axis, said first end whereby a fluid being mixed reaches a high radial velocity and is sheared as it impacts said vanes, and whereby a surface area of said vanes is enlarged at one or more areas thereof, providing for an increased fluid flow and mixing rate.
- 40. The device in accordance with claim 39 including the step of providing vanes which are curved between said inner edge and an outer edge thereof.
