Claims
- 1. A process for augmenting or enhancing the aroma or taste of a consumable material selected from the group consisting of perfume compositions, perfumed articles, colognes, foodstuffs, chewing gums, medicinal products and toothpastes comprising the step of adding to said consumable material an aroma or taste augmenting or enhancing quantity of a composition of matter including as a major proportion, a mixture of compounds having the structures: ##STR108## with the mole ratio range of compound having the structure: ##STR109## to compound having the structure: ##STR110## being from 0.8 up to 0.9:0.1 up to 0.2, produced according to the process comprising the steps of:
- (i) reacting the compound having the structure: ##STR111## with an alkali metal thiocyanate having the structure: ##STR112## according to the reaction: ##STR113## wherein M represents alkali metal in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst, said phase transfer catalyst having the general formula: ##STR114## wherein at least one of R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 is C.sub.6 -C.sub.14 aryl, C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 aralkyl, C.sub.6 -C.sub.20 alkyl, C.sub.6 -C.sub.14 alkaryl and C.sub.6 -C.sub.20 alkenyl and the other of R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 is alkyl selected from the group consisting of methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, i-propyl, 1-butyl, 2-butyl, 1-methyl-2-propyl, 1-pentyl and 1-octyl and Z.sup.- is an anion selected from the group consisting of chloride, bromide and hydroxide, the reaction temperature varying from about 45.degree. C. up to about 85.degree. C.; the pressure of reaction varying from one atmosphere up to 10 atmospheres; the mole ratio of alkali metal thiocyanate:epoxide varying from about 8:1 down to about 1:1; the said alkali metal thiocyanate being dissolved in water with the alkali metal thiocyanate being in a concentration of between 10% and 50% in said water;
- (ii) reacting the resulting product containing a major proportion of the compound defined according to the structure: ##STR115## with lithium aluminum hydride to form a lithium salt and then hydrolyzing said lithium salt with mineral acid according to the reaction sequence: ##STR116## the reaction taking place at a temperature in the range of 25.degree.-36.degree. C. in the presence of a tetrahydrofuran solvent; and
- (iii) recovering the resulting reaction product by fractional distillation at a vapor temperature in the range of 45.degree.-58.degree. C. and a pressure of 0.33-0.35 mm/Hg.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the consumable material is a perfume composition, cologne or perfumed article.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein the consumable material is a foodstuff or chewing gum.
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein a perfumed article is a solid or liquid anionic, cationic, nonionic or zwitterionic detergent.
- 5. The process of claim 1 wherein the consumable material is a perfumed article and the perfumed article is a perfumed polymer.
- 6. The process of claim 1 wherein the consumable material is a perfumed article and the perfumed article is a fabric softener composition or fabric softener article.
