Claims
- 1. A method of determining a radio channel for a mobile station (110) for communicating via a service in a mobile radio system (500), the mobile radio system (500) having at least two base transceiver stations with corresponding base transceiver station radio coverage areas and a plurality of radio channels of which radio channels some could be in use for existing radio connections, characterized by the following steps:
selecting at least one candidate radio channel among the radio channels; measuring the quality of the at least one candidate radio channel, resulting in at least one radio channel quality measure; estimating for the at least one candidate radio channel the interference effects on the existing radio connections of establishing a radio connection on the at least one candidate radio channel, resulting in at least one interference estimate; and determining one of the at least one candidate radio channel(s) for communication based on the at least one radio channel quality measure and the at least one interference estimate.
- 2. The method according to claim 1, further characterized by
the step of measuring the quality being performed by the mobile station (110); and the at least one candidate radio channel being at least one downlink radio channel.
- 3. The method according to claim 2, further characterized by
sending the at least one radio channel quality measure from the mobile station (110) to the mobile radio system (500), and the step of determining taking place at the mobile radio system (500).
- 4. The method according to claim 3, further characterized by
the step of estimating further comprises the step of measuring the path loss between one of the at least two base transceiver stations and a base transceiver station radio coverage area corresponding to another one of the at least two base transceiver stations.
- 5. The method according to claim 3, further characterized by
the step of estimating being performed by using a cell-to-cell interdependency matrix.
- 6. The method according to claim 3, further characterized by
the step of measuring the quality further comprises the step of analyzing soft values in the mobile station equalizer.
- 7. The method according to claim 3, further characterized by
the step of measuring the quality further comprises the steps of measuring the interference during idle time slots and measuring the carrier signal strength during active time slots.
- 8. The method according to claim 1, further characterized by
comparing the at least one radio channel quality measure with a quality requested by the service, resulting in at least one quality comparison result; and the step of determining further comprises determining one of the at least one candidate radio channel(s) based on the at least one quality comparison result.
- 9. The method according to claim 8, characterized in that
the service being a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS); the at least one quality measure being expressed in an amount of net bandwidth; the quality requested by the service being expressed in a requested amount of net bandwidth; the step of comparing further comprises the step of using information regarding existing usage of the frequency of the at least one candidate radio channel together with the total amount of net bandwidth on the at least one candidate radio channel to obtain an amount of available net bandwidth; and the at least one quality comparison result comprises a result of the comparison between the requested amount of net bandwidth and the amount of available net bandwidth.
- 10. The method according to claim 1, further characterized by
when the mobile radio system (500) comprises at least a first mobile radio network (100) having a plurality of radio channels and a second mobile radio network (510, 520) having a plurality of radio channels, the coverage area of the first mobile radio network (100) at least partly being overlapped by the coverage area of the second mobile radio network (510, 520); the at least one candidate radio channel selected in the step of selecting being selected among the radio channels of the first mobile radio network and the second mobile radio network; and the step of estimating further comprises estimating the interference effects on existing radio connections in the first mobile radio network (100) and in the second mobile radio network (510, 520).
- 11. A system for mobile radio communication (500) having a plurality of radio channels of which some radio channels could be in use for existing radio connections, the radio channels not in use being radio channels available for allocation to a mobile station (110) for communication in the mobile radio system (500), characterized by
radio resource administrating means (300) for keeping a list of candidate radio channels, selected among the radio channels available for allocation, among which candidate radio channels a radio channel for the mobile station (110) is to be determined, and for determining the radio channel for the mobile station (110); means for exchanging information between the mobile station (110) and the radio resource administrating means (300); interference supervising means (320), coupled to the radio resource administration means (300), for estimating the impact a radio connection on a certain candidate radio channel would have on existing radio connections; and the mobile station (110) being capable of measuring the radio quality of radio channels.
- 12. A system according to claim 11, further characterized by
session quality supervising means (310), coupled to the radio resource administration means (300), for supervising the radio quality of the existing radio connections.
- 13. The system of claim 11, further characterized by
interference impact statistical database means (330), coupled to the interference supervising means (320), for storing information on cell-to-cell interference dependencies.
- 14. The system according to claim 13, further characterized by
the interference impact statistical database means (330) being continuously updated with interference measurement results from mobile stations in the mobile radio system (500).
- 15. The system according to claim 11, further characterized by
the mobile station (110) being adapted to measuring the radio quality of radio channels by analyzing soft values in the mobile station equalizer.
- 16. The system according to claim 11, further characterized by
the mobile station (110) being adapted to measuring the radio quality of radio channels by measuring the interference during idle time slots and measuring the carrier signal strength during active time slots.
- 17. The system according to claim 11, further characterized by
the mobile station (110) being capable of measuring the radio quality of radio channels of different mobile radio networks (100, 510, 520); and the interference supervising means (300) being capable of estimating the impact a connection on a certain candidate radio channel would have on existing radio connections in the different mobile radio networks. 11. (Currently amended) A system for mobile radio communication (having a plurality of radio channels of which some radio channels could be in use for existing radio connections, the radio channels not in use being radio channels available for allocation to a mobile station (110) for communication in the mobile radio system (500), characterized by comprising: a radio resource administrating means administrator (300) for keeping a list of candidate radio channels, selected among the radio channels available for allocation, among which candidate radio channels a radio channel for the mobile station (110) is to be determined, and for determining the radio channel for the mobile station (110); a communications path means for exchanging information between the mobile station (110) and the radio resource administrating means (300); an interference supervising means supervisor (320), coupled to the radio resource administration means administrator (300), for estimating the impact a radio connection on a certain candidate radio channel would have on existing radio connections; and the mobile station (110) being capable of measuring the radio quality of radio channels. 12. (Currently amended) A system according to claim 11, further characterized by comprising: a session quality supervising means supervisor (310), coupled to the radio resource administrator administration means (300), for supervising the radio quality of the existing radio connections. 13. (Currently amended) The system of claim 11, further characterized by comprising: an interference impact statistical database means (330), coupled to the interference supervisor supervising means (320), for storing information on cell-to-cell interference dependencies. 14. (Currently amended) The system according to claim 13, further characterized by comprising: the interference impact statistical database means (330) being continuously updated with interference measurement results from mobile stations in the mobile radio system (500). 15. (Currently amended) The system according to claim 11, wherein further characterized by the mobile station (110) being is adapted to measure measuring the radio quality of radio channels by analyzing soft values in the mobile station equalizer. 16. (Currently amended) The system according to claim 11, wherein further characterized bad the mobile station (110) being is capable of measuring the radio quality of radio channels of different mobile radio networks (100, 510, 520); and the interference supervisor is supervising means (300) being capable of estimating the impact a connection on a certain candidate radio channel would have on existing radio connections in the different mobile radio networks.
