Claims
- 1. A system for changing the stiffness of a ski, the ski having a forward end and a rearward end, said system comprising:
- an elongated, substantially rigid engagement member attached to a ski and having active surfaces with a forward facing end surface and a rearward facing end surface, and means for supporting said engagement member for movement longitudinally relative to said support means and the ski as the ski bends; and
- adjustable impedance means operatively engageable with said forward facing end surface and adjustable impedance means operatively engageable with said rearward facing end surface, as bending moments are applied to the ski tending to cause the ski to bend, for changing the actual bending of the ski beneath said system.
- 2. A system according to claim 1 wherein said impedance means is engageable with said forward and rearward facing end surfaces as said bending moments are applied to the ski, to substantially reduce the actual bending.
- 3. A system according to claim 1 wherein said engagement member is boot support means attachable to a ski, said forward and rearward facing end surfaces are slidable longitudinally relative to the ski, and said bending is the underfoot bending of the ski.
- 4. A system according to claim 1 wherein said impedance means are control means operatively engageable with said forward and rearward end surfaces to control the actual bending of the ski as said bending moments are applied.
- 5. A system according to claim 4 wherein said control means is positioned an intermediate distance from said forward and rearward end surfaces of said active surfaces; said control means operatively engaging said forward and rearward end surfaces of said active surfaces as the ski turns in the snow and bends the ski to place said engagement member and said control means in operative engagement to change the actual bending of the ski.
- 6. A system according to claim 4 wherein said control means comprises adjustable control means positionable at selected locations relative to said forward and rearward facing portions of said active surfaces of said engagement member to change the amounts the ski bends before said control means engages said forward and rearward end surfaces.
- 7. A system according to claim 6 wherein said adjustable control means is positionable to not be operatively engageable with said forward and rearward facing end surfaces of said active surfaces of said engagement member.
- 8. A system according to claim 6 wherein said adjustable control means is positionable to be in initial operative engagement with said forward and rearward end surfaces of said active surfaces of said engagement member to reduce all longitudinal bending of the ski underneath said system.
- 9. A system according to claim 6 wherein said adjustable control means are positionable to not be operatively engageable with said forward and rearward end surfaces of said active surfaces of said engagement member, to be in initial operative engagement with said forward and rearward end surfaces or to be positionable intermediate of said last mentioned positions.
- 10. A system according to claim 1 wherein said impedance means are disposed in clamp means fixable to the ski, at least one of said control means being selectively movable and lockable in said clamp means to adjust the location of said control means relative to the forward and/or rearward facing portion of said active surface(s) of said engagement member.
- 11. A system according to claim 1 wherein said impedance means comprise varying impedance means, said varying impedance means varying its operative engagement with said forward and rearward facing portions as said ski bends.
- 12. Apparatus for modifying and changing the modification of the flexibility of a ski, to which said apparatus is attached, the ski having a forward end and a rearward end, said apparatus comprising:
- engagement means having active surfaces with a forward facing portion and a rearward facing portion and being movable relative to the ski as the ski bends, the forward and rearward facing portions of the engagement means moving toward the respective forward and rearward facing ends of the ski as the ski bends concavely with the intermediate part of the ski moving downwardly, and the forward and rearward facing portions of the engagement means moving away from the forward ends of the ski as the ski bends convexly;
- attachment means for attaching said engagement means to the ski, and for enabling the movement of the forward and rearward facing portions of the engagement means relative to the ski as the ski bends;
- impedance means having at least two selective impedance forces and engageable by at least one of the forward and rearward facing portions of said engagement means as the ski bends to modify the flexibility of the ski according to the selected impedance force; and
- selecting means for selecting the impedance force to modify the flexibility of the ski when the ski bends.
- 13. A system according to claim 12 wherein said impedance means is engageable with said forward and rearward facing portions as said bending moments are applied to the ski, to substantially reduce the actual bending.
- 14. A system according to claim 12 wherein said engagement means is boot support means attachable to a ski, said forward and rearward facing portions are slidable longitudinally relative to the ski, and said bending is the underfoot bending of the ski.
- 15. A system according to claim 12 wherein said impedance means are control means operatively engageable with said forward and rearward facing portions to stop the actual bending of the ski as said bending moments are applied.
- 16. A system according to claim 15 wherein said control means is positioned an intermediate distance from said forward and rearward facing portions of said active surfaces of said engagement means; said control means operatively engaging said forward and rearward facing portions of said engagement means as the ski turns in the snow and bends the ski to place said active surfaces and said control means in operative engagement to change the actual bending of the ski.
- 17. A system according to claim 15 wherein said control means comprises adjustable control means positionable at selected locations relative to said forward and rearward facing portions of said active surfaces of said engagement means to change the amounts the ski bends before said control means engages said forward and rearward
- 18. A system according to claim 17 wherein said adjustable control means is positionable to not be operatively engageable with said forward and rearward facing portions of said engagement means.
- 19. A system according to claim 18 wherein said adjustable control means is positionable to be in initial operative engagement with said forward and rearward facing portions of said active surfaces of said engagement means to reduce all longitudinal bending of the ski underneath said system.
- 20. A system according to claim 18 wherein said adjustable control means are positionable to not be operatively engageable with said forward and rearward facing portions of said active surfaces of said engagement means, to be in initial operative engagement with said forward and rearward facing portions or to be positionable intermediate of said last mentioned positions.
- 21. A system according to claim 12 wherein said impedance means are disposed in clamp means fixable to the ski, at least one of said control means being selectively movable and lockable in said clamp means to adjust the location of said control means relative to the forward and/or rearward facing portion of said engagement means.
- 22. A system according to claim 14 and further including guide means for guiding the slidable movement of said forward and rearward facing portions along the ski.
- 23. A system according to claim 12 wherein said impedance means comprise varying impedance means, said varying impedance means varying its operative engagement with said forward and rearward facing portions as said ski bends.
- 24. A system for changing the stiffness of a ski, the ski having a forward end and a rearward end, said system comprising:
- engagement means attachable to a ski and having active surfaces with a forward facing portion and rearward facing portion and a portion fixed longitudinally and movable vertically relative to the ski, said means being fixed by connecting means to the ski so that said forward and said rearward portions are longitudinally moveable relative to the ski, but said fixed portion is longitudinally immovable but vertically movable relative to the ski as the ski bends,
- impedance means operatively engageable with said forward facing portion and rearward facing portion as bending moments are applied to the ski tending to cause the ski to bend, to change the actual longitudinal bending of the ski beneath said system.
- 25. A system according to claim 24 in which said connecting means comprises a pin member and a bracket member, said pin member being dimensioned for insertion into said bracket member.
- 26. A system according to claim 1 that includes means for holding a portion of said engagement members between said forward and rearward end surfaces longitudinally stationary relative to said ski when the ski bends to prevent uncontrolled longitudinal movement of said engagement member.
- 27. A system according to claim 24 wherein a first impedance means is operatively engageable with said forward end surface and a second impedance means is operatively engageable with said rearward end surface of said active surfaces, said first and second impedance means being independently adjustable relative to said forward and rearward end surfaces to change independently the bending of the ski beneath each of said forward and rearward end surfaces of the ski.
