BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Traditionally, orthodontists have used a Rapid Palatal Expander (“RPE”) attached to an orthodontic appliance to force an expansion between the plates in the palatal bone. The RPE is the “engine” behind the appliance, and is engaged by turning a gear mechanism that exerts outward force onto the palatal bone and surrounding teeth, thereby causing an expansion between the two plates of the palatal bone.

There are a number of shortcomings in the existing RPE devices. For example, these devices are relatively bulky and require guide rails are round-shaped and subject to side wiggling movement caused by side push caused by biting stress so as to compromise efficacy of treatment.

Therefore, it is an object of the present invention to provide a more effective RPE device.

It is a further object of the present invention to provide an RPE device having a design configured for being a device of a reduced dimension.
