Claims
- 1. A stretched fiber having tenacity at least 15 g/denier, tensile modulus at least 500 g/denier and main melting temperature at least 140.degree. C., comprising polyethylene of molecular weight at least about 500,000 and a polymeric additive selected from the group consisting of copolymers containing monoolefins as primary monomers, polyolefins of molecular weight not greater than 250,000, oxidized polyolefins and polyoxymethylenes, with the weight of polymeric additive being at least 2% of the weight of the polyethylene.
- 2. The stretched fiber of claim 1 wherein said polyethylene is of weight average molecular weight at least 1,000,000.
- 3. The stretched fiber of claim 1 wherein said polymeric additive is an ethylene copolymer.
- 4. The stretched fiber of claim 3 wherein said ethylene copolymer contains at least one comonomer selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, vinyl acetate and vinyl alcohol.
- 5. The stretched fiber of claim 3 wherein said ethylene copolymer is an ethylene-acrylic acid copolymer with 1-15 mole percent acrylic acid.
- 6. The stretched fiber of claim 3 wherein said ethylene copolymer is an ethylene-propylene copolymer.
- 7. The stretched fiber of claim 3 wherein said ethylene copolymer is an ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer.
- 8. The stretched fiber of claim 1 wherein said polymeric additive is a polyolefin of molecular weight not greater than 250,000.
- 9. The stretched fiber of claim 8 wherein said polymeric additive is low density polyethylene.
- 10. A composite comprising a network of the stretched fiber of claim 9 and a matrix.
- 11. The composite of claim 10 wherein said matrix is a polymeric matrix.
- 12. The composite of claim 11 wherein said polymeric matrix is a thermoplastic matrix.
- 13. The composite of claim 11 wherein said polymeric matarix is a thermosetting matrix.
- 14. The composite of claim 11 wherein said polymeric matrix is an elastomeric matrix.
