Claims
- 1. An automatic transmission fluid composition which comprises a major amount of base oil having a viscosity of from about 3.5 to 4.5 cSt at 100.degree. C. and minor amounts of (i) a phosphorus-containing succinimide or succinamide formed by contacting a partially hydrolyzed phosphorus ester with a succinimide or succinamide dispersant, and (ii) viscosity index improver such that said automatic transmission fluid composition has a viscosity in the range of 6.5 to 8.5 cSt at 100.degree. C.
- 2. A composition as claimed in claim 1 wherein said base oil is refined mineral oil.
- 3. A composition as claimed in claim 1 wherein said base oil is 100 neutral oil or a blend of 80-120 neutral oils.
- 4. A composition as claimed in claim 1 wherein said viscosity index improver is a polymethacrylate viscosity index improver.
- 5. A composition as claimed in claim 1 wherein said viscosity index improver is an ethylene-propylene copolymeric viscosity index improver.
- 6. A composition as claimed in claim 1 wherein said viscosity index improver is an acrylate viscosity index improver.
- 7. A composition as claimed in claim 1 wherein said automatic transmission fluid composition has a maximum viscosity of about 50,000 centipoises at -40.degree. C.
- 8. A composition as claimed in claim 1 wherein said base oil has a viscosity of from about 3.8 to about 4.4 cSt at 100.degree. C.
- 9. A composition as claimed in claim 8 wherein said automatic transmission fluid composition has a maximum viscosity of about 50,000 centipoises at -40.degree. C.
- 10. A composition as claimed in claim 1 wherein said dispersant is a monoalkenyl succinimide derived from a mixture of alkylene polyamines and wherein the alkylene group is derived from polyisobutylene having a number average molecular weight of about 980.
- 11. A composition as claimed in any of claims 1-10 wherein the phosphorus-containing succinimide or succinamide also contains boron.
