Claims
- 1. A fuel composition comprising a hydrocarbon boiling in the gasoline or diesel range and from 10 to 10,000 parts per million of a polyamino alkenyl or alkyl succinimide wherein one or more of the nitrogens of the polyamino moiety is substituted with a hydroxyhydrocarbyl oxycarbonyl wherein the hydroxyhydrocarbyl group of said hydroxyhydrocarbyl oxycarbonyl contains from 2 to 20 carbon atoms and 1 to 6 hydroxy groups with the proviso that there is no hydroxy substitution on the hydrocarbyl carbon atom attaching the hydroxyhydrocarbyl group to the oxy atom of the oxycarbonyl group and with the further proviso that when more than one hydroxy group is contained in the hydroxyhydrocarbyl group, no more than one hydroxy group is attached to the same carbon atom and the number of carbon atoms in the hydroxyhydrocarbyl group is minimally one greater than the number of hydroxy groups.
- 2. The fuel composition of claim 1 wherein the alkenyl or alkyl group of said polyamino alkenyl or alkyl succinimide contains from 10 to 300 carbon atoms.
- 3. The fuel composition of claim 2 wherein the alkenyl or alkyl group of said polyamino alkenyl or alkyl succinimide contains from 20 to 100 carbon atoms.
- 4. The fuel composition of claim 3 wherein the hydroxyhydrocarbyl group of said hydroxyhydrocarbyl oxycarbonyl contains from 1 to 3 hydroxy groups.
- 5. The fuel composition of claim 4 wherein the hydroxyhydrocarbyl group of said hydroxyhydrocarbyl oxycarbonyl contains 1 hydroxy group.
- 6. The fuel composition of claim 4 wherein the hydroxyhydrocarbyl group of said hydroxyhydrocarbyl oxycarbonyl is selected from the group consisting of 2-hydroxyethyl, 3-hydroxypropyl, hydroxyisopropyl, 4-hydroxybutyl, 6-hydroxyhexyl and 2,3-dihydroxypropyl.
- 7. The fuel composition of claim 6 wherein said hydroxyhydrocarbyl oxycarbonyl is 2-hydroxyethyl oxycarbonyl.
- 8. A fuel composition comprising a hydrocarbon boiling in the gasoline or diesel range and from 10 to 10,000 parts per million of a polyamino alkenyl or alkyl succinimide wherein one or more of the nitrogens of the polyamino moiety is substituted with hydrocarbyl oxycarbonyl.
- 9. The fuel composition of claim 8 wherein the alkenyl or alkyl group of said polyamino alkenyl or alkyl succinimide contains from 10 to 300 carbon atoms.
- 10. The fuel composition of claim 9 wherein the alkenyl or alkyl group of said polyamino alkenyl or alkyl succinimide contains from 20 to 100 carbon atoms.
- 11. The fuel composition of claim 10 wherein the hydrocarbyl group of the hydrocarbyl oxycarbonyl contains from 1 to 20 carbon atoms.
- 12. The fuel composition of claim 11 wherein the hydrocarbyl group of the hydrocarbyl oxycarbonyl contains from 2 to 7 carbon atoms.
- 13. A fuel composition comprising a hydrocarbon boiling in the gasoline or diesel range and from 10 to 10,000 parts per million of a polyamino alkenyl or alkyl succinimide wherein one or more of the nitrogens of the polyamino moiety is substituted with a hydroxy poly(oxyalkylene)oxycarbonyl.
- 14. The fuel composition of claim 13 wherein the alkenyl or alkyl group of said polyamino alkenyl or alkyl succinimide contains from 10 to 300 carbon atoms.
- 15. The fuel composition of claim 14 wherein the alkenyl or alkyl group of said polyamino alkenyl or alkyl succinimide contains from 20 to 100 carbon atoms.
- 16. The fuel composition of claim 15 wherein the poly(oxyalkylene) group of said hydroxy poly(oxyalkylene)oxycarbonyl contains from 2 to 30 C.sub.2 -C.sub.5 oxyalkylene units.
- 17. The fuel composition of claim 16 wherein the poly(oxyalkylene) group of said hydroxy poly(oxyalkylene) oxycarbonyl contains from 2 to 20 C.sub.2 -C.sub.5 oxyalkylene units.
- 18. A fuel composition comprising a hydrocarbon boiling in the gasoline or diesel range and from 10 to 10,000 parts per million of a polyamino alkenyl or alkyl succinimide of the formula: ##STR44## wherein R is alkenyl or alkyl of from 10 to 300 carbon atoms; R.sub.2 is alkylene of from 2 to 10 carbon atoms; R.sub.21 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, lower alkyl of from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, lower hydroxy alkyl of from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, ##STR45## wherein t is an integer from 0 to 6, and hydrocarbyl is a hydrocarbyl group of from 2 to 20 carbon atoms with the proviso that there is no hydroxy substitution on the hydrocarbyl carbon atom attaching the ##STR46## group to the oxy atom of the ##STR47## group and with the further proviso that when t is greater than one, the hydroxy groups are not attached to the same carbon atom and the number of carbon atoms in the (HO--.sub.t hydrocarbyl group is minimally equal to t+1, and ##STR48## wherein alkylene-O is a C.sub.2 -C.sub.5 oxyalkylene and s is an integer from 2 to 20; a is an integer of from 0 to 10; and T is selected from the group consisting of --NH.sub.2, ##STR49## wherein R, hydrocarbyl, alkylene, s and t are as defined above; with still the further proviso that if T is --NH.sub.2 or ##STR50## then a is not zero and at least one of R.sub.21 is either ##STR51##
- 19. The fuel composition of claim 18 wherein R is alkenyl or alkyl of from 20 to 100 carbon atoms.
- 20. The fuel composition of claim 19 wherein R.sub.2 is alkylene of from 2 to 6 carbon atoms.
- 21. The fuel composition of claim 20 wherein a is an integer of from 1 to 6.
- 22. The fuel composition of claim 21 wherein R.sub.21 is ##STR52## and t is 1.
- 23. The fuel composition of claim 22 wherein T is selected from the group consisting of: ##STR53##
- 24. The fuel composition of claim 23 wherein t is 1.
- 25. The fuel composition of claim 24 wherein R.sub.21 is ##STR54##
- 26. A fuel composition comprising a hydrocarbon boiling in the gasoline or diesel range and from 10 to 10,000 parts per million of a product prepared by the process which comprises contacting at a temperature sufficient to cause reaction an alkenyl or alkyl succinimide having at least one primary or secondary amine with a cyclic carbonate wherein the molar charge of the cyclic carbonate to the basic nitrogen of the alkenyl or alkyl succinimide is from about 0.2:1 to about 10:1.
- 27. The fuel composition of claim 26 wherein the cyclic carbonate is selected from the group consisting of: ##STR55## wherein R.sub.5, R.sub.6, R.sub.7, R.sub.8 and R.sub.9 are independently selected from hydrogen or alkyl of from 1 to 2 carbon atoms; R.sub.10 is hydroxy or hydrogen; and n is an integer from 0 to 1.
- 28. The fuel composition of claim 27 wherein the cyclic carbonate is ##STR56##
- 29. The fuel composition of claim 28 wherein n is zero and R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.8 are hydrogen and R.sub.9 is hydrogen or methyl.
- 30. The fuel composition of claim 29 wherein the cyclic carbonate is ethylene carbonate.
- 31. The fuel composition of claim 29 wherein the cyclic carbonate is propylene carbonate.
- 32. The fuel composition of claim 26 wherein the molar charge of the cyclic carbonate to the basic nitrogens of the alkenyl or alkyl succinimide is from about 0.5:1 to about 5:1.
- 33. The fuel composition of claim 32 wherein the molar charge of the cyclic carbonate to the basic nitrogens of the alkenyl or alkyl succinimide is from about 1:1 to 3:1.
- 34. The fuel composition of claim 33 wherein the molar charge of the cyclic carbonate to the basic nitrogens of the alkenyl or alkyl succinimide is approximately 2:1.
- 35. A fuel composition comprising a hydrocarbon boiling in the gasoline or diesel range and from 10 to 10,000 parts per million of a product prepared by the process of which comprises contacting at a temperature sufficient to cause reaction an alkenyl or alkyl succinimide of the formula II: ##STR57## wherein R is an alkenyl or alkyl group containing from about 10 to 300 carbon atoms; R.sub.2 is alkylene of from 2 to 10 carbon atoms; R.sub.3 is hydrogen or lower alkyl of from 1 to 6 carbon atoms; a is an integer from 0 to 10; and W is --NH.sub.2 or represents a group: ##STR58## wherein R is an alkenyl or alkyl group containing from about 10 to 300 carbon atoms with the proviso that if W is ##STR59## then a is not zero and at least one of R.sub.3 is hydrogen; with a cyclic carbonate wherein the molar charge of the cyclic carbonate to the basic nitrogen of the alkenyl or alkyl succinimide is from about 0.2:1 to about 10:1.
- 36. The fuel composition of claim 35 wherein R is an alkenyl or alkyl group of from 12 to 100 carbon atoms.
- 37. The fuel composition of claim 36 wherein R.sub.2 is alkylene of from 2 to 6 carbon atoms, a is an integer from 1 to 6 and R.sub.3 is hydrogen.
- 38. The fuel composition of claim 37 wherein the cyclic carbonate is selected from the group consisting of: ##STR60## wherein R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6, R.sub.7, R.sub.8 and R.sub.9 are independently selected from hydrogen or alkyl of 1 to 2 carbon atoms; R.sub.10 is either hydrogen or hydroxy; and n is an integer from 0 to 1.
- 39. The fuel composition of claim 38 wherein the cyclic carbonate is ##STR61##
- 40. The fuel composition of claim 39 wherein n is zero and R.sub.4, R.sub.5 and R.sub.8 are hydrogen and R.sub.9 is hydrogen or methyl.
- 41. The fuel composition of claim 40 wherein the molar charge of the cyclic carbonate to the basic nitrogens of the alkenyl or alkyl succinimide is from about 0.5:1 to about 5:1.
- 42. The fuel composition of claim 41 wherein the molar charge of the cyclic carbonate to the basic nitrogens of the alkenyl or alkyl succinimide is from about 1:1 to 3:1.
- 43. The fuel composition of claim 42 wherein the molar charge of the cyclic carbonate to the basic nitrogens of the alkenyl or alkyl succinimide is approximately 2:1.
- 44. A fuel composition comprising a hydrocarbon boiling in the gasoline or diesel range and from 10 to 10,000 parts per million of a product prepared by the process which comprises contacting a polyamino alkenyl or alkyl succinimide with a linear polycarbonate at a temperature sufficient to cause reaction wherein the molar ratios of the individual carbonate units of said linear polycarbonate to the basic amine nitrogen of the polyamino alkenyl or alkyl succinimide employed in the process of this invention is from about 0.1:1 to about 5:1.
- 45. The fuel composition of claim 44 wherein the alkenyl or alkyl group of said polyamino alkenyl or alkyl succinimide contains from 10 to 300 carbon atoms.
- 46. The fuel composition of claim 45 wherein said linear polycarbonate is a polycarbonate of the formula: ##STR62## wherein R.sub.15 is a hydroxyhydrocarbyl of from 2 to 20 carbon atoms; R.sub.16 is a divalent hydrocarbyl group of from 1 to 20 carbon atoms; m is an integer of from 1 to 10; and n is an integer of from 1 to 300.
- 47. A fuel concentrate comprising 30 to 90 weight percent of an inert stable oleophilic organic solvent and 10 to 70 weight percent of a polyamino alkenyl or alkyl succinimide wherein one or more of the nitrogens of the polyamino moiety is substituted with a hydroxyhydrocarbyl oxycarbonyl wherein the hydroxyhydrocarbyl group of said hydroxyhydrocarbyl oxycarbonyl contains from 2 to 20 carbon atoms and 1 to 6 hydroxy groups with the proviso that there is no hydroxy substitution on the hydrocarbyl carbon atom attaching the hydroxyhydrocarbyl group to the oxy atom of the oxycarbonyl group with the further proviso that when more than one hydroxy group is contained in the hydroxyhydrocarbyl group, no more than one hydroxy group is attached to the same carbon atom and the number of carbon atoms in the hydroxyhydrocarbyl group is minimally one greater than the number of hydroxy groups.
- 48. The fuel concentrate of claim 47 wherein the alkenyl or alkyl group of said polyamino alkenyl or alkyl succinimides contains from 10 to 300 carbon atoms.
- 49. A fuel concentrate comprising 30 to 90 weight percent of an inert stable oleophilic organic solvent and 10 to 70 weight percent of a polyamino alkenyl or alkyl succinimide wherein one or more of the nitrogens of the polyamino moiety is substituted with hydrocarbyl oxycarbonyl.
- 50. A fuel concentrate comprising 30 to 90 weight percent of an inert stable oleophilic organic solvent and 10 to 70 weight percent of a polyamino alkenyl or alkyl succinimide wherein one or more of the nitrogens of the polyamino moiety is substituted with a hydroxy poly(oxyalkylene)oxycarbonyl.
- 51. A fuel concentrate comprising 30 to 90 weight percent of an inert stable oleophilic organic solvent and 10 to 70 weight percent of a polyamino alkenyl or alkyl succinimide of the formula: ##STR63## wherein R is alkenyl or alkyl of from 10 to 300 carbon atoms; R.sub.2 is alkylene of from 2 to 10 carbon atoms; R.sub.21 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, lower alkyl of from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, lower hydroxy alkyl of from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, ##STR64## wherein t is an integer from 0 to 6, and hydrocarbyl is a hydrocarbyl group of from 2 to 20 carbon atoms with the proviso that there is no hydroxy substitution on the hydrocarbyl carbon atom attaching the ##STR65## group to the oxy atom of the ##STR66## group and with the further proviso that when t is greater than one, the hydroxy groups are not attached to the same carbon atom and the number of carbon atoms in the (HO--.sub.t hydrocarbyl group is minimally equal to t+1, and ##STR67## wherein alkylene-O is a C.sub.2 -C.sub.5 oxyalkylene and s is an integer from 2 to 20; a is an integer of from 0 to 10; and T is selected from the group consisting of --NH.sub.2, ##STR68## wherein R, hydrocarbyl, alkylene, s and t are as defined above; with still the further proviso that if T is --NH.sub.2 or ##STR69## then a is not zero and at least one of R.sub.21 is either ##STR70##
- 52. The fuel concentrate of claim 51 wherein R is alkenyl or alkyl of from 20 to 100 carbon atoms.
- 53. A fuel concentrate comprising 30 to 90 weight percent of an inert stable oleophilic organic solvent and 10 to 70 weight percent of a product produced by the process which comprises contacting at a temperature sufficient to cause reaction an alkenyl or alkyl succinimide having at least one primary or secondary amine with a cyclic carbonate wherein the molar charge of the cyclic carbonate to the basic nitrogen of the alkenyl or alkyl succinimide is from about 0.2:1 to about 10:1.
- 54. The fuel concentrate of claim 53 wherein the cyclic carbonate is ##STR71## wherein R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6, R.sub.7, R.sub.8 and R.sub.9 are independently selected from hydrogen or alkyl of from 1 to 2 carbon atoms; and n is an integer from 0 to 1.
- 55. The fuel concentrate of claim 54 wherein the cyclic carbonate is ethylene carbonate.
- 56. The fuel concentrate of claim 54 wherein the cyclic carbonate is propylene carbonate.
- 57. A fuel concentrate comprising 30 to 90 weight percent of an inert stable oleophilic organic solvent and 70 to 10 weight percent of a product prepared by the process of which comprises contacting at a temperature sufficient to cause reaction an alkenyl or alkyl succinimide of the formula II: ##STR72## wherein R is an alkenyl or alkyl group containing from about 10 to 300 carbon atoms; R.sub.2 is alkylene of from 2 to 10 carbon atoms; R.sub.3 is hydrogen or lower alkyl of from 1 to 6 carbon atoms; a is an integer from 0 to 10; and W is --NH.sub.2 or represents a group: ##STR73## wherein R is an alkenyl or alkyl group containing from about 10 to 300 carbon atoms with the proviso that if W is ##STR74## then a is not zero and at least one of R.sub.3 is hydrogen; with a cyclic carbonate wherein the molar charge of the cyclic carbonate to the basic nitrogen of the alkenyl or alkyl succinimide is from about 0.2:1 to about 10:1.
- 58. The fuel concentrate of claim 57 wherein the cyclic carbonate is ##STR75## wherein R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6, R.sub.7, R.sub.8 and R.sub.9 are independently selected from hydrogen or alkyl of from 1 to 2 carbon atoms; and n is an integer from 0 to 1.
- 59. The fuel concentrate of claim 58 wherein n is zero and R.sub.4, R.sub.5 and R.sub.8 are hydrogen and R.sub.9 is hydrogen or methyl.
- 60. A fuel concentrate comprising from 30 to 90 weight percent of a stable inert oleophilic organic solvent and 10 to 70 weight percent of a product prepared by the process which comprises contacting a polyamino alkenyl or alkyl succinimide with a linear polycarbonate at a temperature sufficient to cause reaction wherein the molar ratio of the individual carbonate units of said linear polycarbonate to the basic amine nitrogen of the polyamino alkenyl or alkyl succinimide employed in the process is from about 0.1:1 to about 5:1.
- 61. The fuel concentrate of claim 60 wherein the alkenyl or alkyl group of said polyamino alkenyl or alkyl succinimide contains from 10 to 300 carbon atoms.
- 62. The fuel concentrate of claim 61 wherein said linear polycarbonate is a polycarbonate of the formula: ##STR76## wherein R.sub.15 is a hydroxyhydrocarbyl of from 2 to 20 carbon atoms; R.sub.16 is a divalent hydrocarbyl group of from 1 to 20 carbon atoms; m is an integer of from 1 to 10; and n is an integer of from 1 to 100.
