Claims

                - 1. A method for preparing a secondary sulfonamide polymer, the method comprising, replacing one or more sulfonamido protons of a corresponding primary sulfonamide polymer with a substituent other than hydrogen; provided the primary sulfonamide polymer is not derived or derivable from a branched or unbranched polyalkylamine having greater than 35 repeating monomeric alkylamine units.

                - 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the one or more sulfonamido protons are replaced by alkylating one or more sulfonamido nitrogens.

                - 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the one or more sulfonamido protons are replaced by contacting the primary sulfonamide polymer with a suitable electrophile.

                - 4. The method of claim 2 wherein the one or more sulfonamido nitrogens are alkylated by contacting the primary sulfonamide polymer with a suitable base and an alkylating agent.

                - 5. The method of claim 2 wherein the one or more sulfonamido nitrogens are alkylated under acidic conditions.

                - 6. The method of claim 1 wherein the one or more protons are replaced by contacting the primary sulfonamide polymer with a hypohalite.

                - 7. The method of claim 6 wherein the hypohalite is sodium hypochlorite.

                - 8. A membrane comprising the secondary sulfonamide polymer prepared by the method of claim 1.

                - 9. The method of claim 1 wherein the primary sulfonamide polymer is part of a membrane.

                - 10. A membrane comprising a secondary sulfonamide polymer, wherein the secondary sulfonamide polymer backbone does not comprise polyalkylamine segments having greater than 35 repeating monomeric alkylamine units.

                - 11. The membrane of claim 10, which is a composite membrane.

                - 12. The membrane of claim 11 which is interfacially prepared.

                - 13. An article of manufacture comprising a secondary sulfonamide polymer prepared according to the method of claim 1, which is a chromatography medium, diagnostic medium, medical device, electronic component, separation device, battery electrolyte, or fabric.
