Claims
- 1. A method of modifying a textile material to increase the hydrophobicity of the material, the method comprising crosslinking the material with hydrophobically-modified dimethyloldihydroxyethyleneurea, the hydrophobically-modified dimethyloldihydroxyethyleneurea comprising a covalently attached fluorocarbon group.
- 2. A method according to claim 1 wherein the textile material is a carbohydrate-containing material.
- 3. A method according to claim 1 wherein the hydrophobically-modified dimethyloldihydroxyethyleneurea has the following formula, where R is a straight chain, branched or cyclic fluorocarbon:
- 4. A method of modifying a cellulose-containing textile material to increase the hydrophobicity of the material, the method comprising crosslinking hydroxyl groups on the material with hydrophobically modified dimethyloldihydroxyethyleneurea, the hydrophobically modified d imethyloldihydroxyethyleneurea comprising a covalently attached fluorocarbon group.
- 5. A method according to claim 4 wherein the hydrophobically-modified dimethyloldihydroxyethyleneurea has the following formula, where R is a straight chain, branched or cyclic fluorocarbon:
- 6. A modified carbohydrate-containing textile material produced by reacting the material with hydrophobically-modified dimethyloldihydroxyethyleneurea comprising a covalently attached fluorocarbon group, thereby to crosslink hydroxyl groups on the material with the dimethyloldihydroxyethyleneurea, the modified textile material exhibiting increased hydrophobicity.
- 7. A modified textile material according to claim 6, wherein the hydrophobically-modified dimethyloldihydroxyethyleneurea has the following formula, where R is a straight chain, branched or cyclic hydrocarbon or a straight chain, branched or cyclic fluorocarbon:
