The present disclosure relates to carrying bags and, more particularly, to a modular bag system having a primary bag with an internal organizer that is removable and can be used as bag separately from the primary bag.
Carrying bags are known and consist of a myriad of configurations. Despite this, there remains a need and a desire for a modular bag system that provides greater convenience in carrying items when away from home.
Embodiments of the invention provide a modular bag system that has a primary bag and a secondary bag that can be used in conjunction with the primary bag or separately from the primary bag. When used in conjunction with the primary bag, the secondary bag is positioned within an internal compartment of the primary bag and serves as an organizer for holding various items.
In embodiments, the secondary bag could be removably attached to the outside of the primary bag using any number of couplings or fasteners, such as, for example hook and loop fasteners or key chain hooks. This would provide flexibility to allow for additional storage in primary bag.
In embodiments, the modular bag system is provided as a diaper bag system. The diaper bag system provides a convenience to users that is not found in current diaper bags. For example, short trips by car where you want to carry everything with you, but if you must make a stop, such as to the grocery store, you do not need to carry the whole diaper bag. You can detach the smaller bag that already carries the diapering essentials, slip in the detachable changing pad, fold it, zipper it up, and then add your wallet and baby bottles, as needed, and take it into the store.
In another example, such as outings or airplane flights, where you need to take many items with you, but need the convenience to easily take out the diapering essentials when you need to change the baby's diaper.
In yet another example, for small trips where you only need a small bag, you can just use the small detachable bag instead of carrying the bigger diaper bag.
Therefore, it is an object of embodiments of the present invention to provide a diaper bag system that is a two-in-one diaper bag that has an inner organizer that can double as a smaller diaper bag. The two bags can be used together or separately to take care of long trips or short trips, one child to multiple children, and babies to young children.
It is another object of embodiment of the present invention to provide a diaper bag system wherein a primary bag can be opened to provide a padded surface to lay a child upon for tending to the child, such as when changing a diaper.
It is yet another object of embodiments of the present invention to provide a diaper bag system having a foldable changing pad that can be detachably secured to the padded surface for use when changing a diaper.
It is yet another object of embodiments of the present invention to provide a diaper bag system having a well-organized large diaper bag with a dedicated compartment for diapering essentials and a convenient diaper changing pad. It provides flexibility to detach the smaller diaper bag that would already have the diapering essentials and use it on its own along with the detachable diaper changing pad to go change the baby's diaper or to go on a shorter trip when the bigger diaper bag is not necessary. The smaller diaper bag can also be used in conjunction, but outside of the larger diaper bag, when more space is needed.
In aspects, when diapering is no longer needed, the design of both the primary and secondary bags allow them to be used for tending to needs of toddles, young children, and families.

Also, it is to be understood that the phraseology and terminology employed herein are for the purpose of descriptions and should not be regarded as limiting.
As such, those skilled in the art will appreciate that the conception, upon which this disclosure is based, may readily be utilized as a basis for the designing of other structures, methods, and systems for carrying out the several purposes of the present invention. It is important, therefore, that the claims be regarded as including such equivalent constructions insofar as they do not depart from the spirit and scope of the present invention.

As shown, the primary bag 12 is configured as a backpack to be worn on the back of a user just as a conventional backpack would. However, the primary bag 12 could have different configurations and should not be limited solely to a backpack configuration. The primary bag 12 has a bag body 13 to which is attached a pair of shoulder straps 15a and 15b. The bag body 13 has a back surface 16 and a front surface 18 that is opposite of the back surface. The bag body 13 is configured with two interior compartments 20 and 22 that are located between the front and back surfaces and separated by an internal wall 24.
A plurality of pockets for storage of items may be provide on the exterior of the bag body 13. A plurality of pockets for storage of items may be also provided within interior compartments 20 and 22. These pockets may be arranged in any number, size, and configuration as desired.
A front flap 26 is pivotably movable between a closed position and an open position to allow access to storage compartment 20 when the front flap is in the open position. The front flap 26 is secured in the closed position by zipper 28. A back flap 30 is pivotably moveable between a closed and an open position to allow access to storage compartment 22 when the back flap is in the open position. The back flap 30 is secured in the closed position by zipper 32.
The back flap 30 is padded and configured to lay substantially flat on a surface with the interior surface thereof facing upward when in the open position to allow laying a child on the back flap for tending to the child, such as in changing a diaper. A diaper changing pad 34 can be provided and can be removably secured to the back flap 30, such at the interior surface thereof, by any number of fasteners, such as, for example, a hook and loop fasteners (not shown).

The secondary bag 14 has a secondary bag body 38 that comprises of two half body portions 40 and 42 that are hingedly connected along a corresponding edge and movable between an open position and a closed position, in a clamshell-like configuration. In the closed position, the half body portions are detachable connected about their perimeters by a zipper 43, for example, and define an internal secondary bag storage compartment. A shoulder strap 45 is also provided and attached to the bag body 38.
Body portion 40 includes an interior side 44 and an exterior side 46. Similarly, body portion 42 includes an interior side 48 and an exterior side 50. The interior side 44 of body portion 40 includes a plurality of interior pockets, generally at 52, for storage of items. Likewise, the interior side 48 of body portion 42 includes a plurality of interior pockets, generally at 54, for storage of items. These interior pockets can be arranged in any number, size, and configuration as desired. Similarly, both the exterior sides 46 and 50 may have one or more exterior pockets for storage of items. These exterior pockets can be arranged in any number, size, and configuration as desired. In a preferred embodiment, a least one interior pocket is configured to fresh diapers, and at least one exterior pocket is configured to hold a feeding bottle.
The secondary bag 14 and interior compartment 22 are configured such that the secondary bag is removably received by the interior compartment and removably secured therein with the secondary bag in the open position with the interior pockets 52 and 54 facing outwardly. In this configuration, the secondary bag 14 provides an organizer for the interior compartment 22 for the storage of various items as needed.
The secondary bag 14 can then be removed from the interior compartment 22 and used as a standalone bag separately from the primary bag 12. The folding diaper changing pad 34 is sized and configured to be carried by the secondary bag 14 when used as a bag separately from the primary bag.
The secondary bag 14 can be detachably secured in the interior compartment, in the open position, by any number of means, such as, for example cooperative fasteners located on the secondary bag body 38 and on the interior walls of the interior compartment. It is contemplated that other methods could be used to removably secure the secondary bag, in the open position, in compartment 22.
While the invention has been particularly shown and described with respect to the illustrated embodiments thereof, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that the foregoing and other changes in form and details may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
