Claims
- 1. A wharf extending into water at a port or harbor site, the wharf being comprised of one or more modular caissons each modular caisson being constructed of one or more floatable parts preconstructed onshore and transported in the water to the port or harbor site, the wharf having a docking side extending into the water and having a shape and length effective to enable marine vessels to dock alongside the wharf, one or more sets of rails running along the wharf for receiving thereon railcars, and cargo transferring means movable lengthwise along the wharf for directly transferring cargo from a vessel docked alongside the wharf to railcars on the one or more sets of rails.
- 2. A wharf according to claim 1; wherein the one or more sets of rails include at least one set of rails running along the wharf beneath the cargo transferring means.
- 3. A wharf according to claim 2; wherein the one or more sets of rails include plural sets of rails running along the wharf beneath the cargo transferring means.
- 4. A wharf according to claim 3; wherein the one or more sets of rails include at least one set of rails running along the wharf alongside the cargo transferring means.
- 5. A wharf according to claim 3; wherein the one or more sets of rails include plural sets of rails running along the wharf alongside the cargo transferring means.
- 6. A wharf according to claim 3; wherein the cargo transferring means comprises a cargo crane movable along guideways running lengthwise along the wharf.
- 7. A wharf according to claim 2; wherein the cargo transferring means comprises a cargo crane movable along guideways running lengthwise along the wharf.
- 8. A wharf according to claim 1; wherein each floatable part of the modular caisson has trim and ballast tanks for precisely trimming and ballasting the floatable part to enable precise positioning thereof at the port or harbor site.
- 9. A wharf according to claim 8; wherein each modular caisson has one or more internal storage spaces.
- 10. A wharf according to claim 9; wherein the trim and ballast tanks are located inside each floatable part in spaces separate from the one or more storage spaces.
- 11. A wharf according to claim 1; wherein each modular caisson has one or more internal storage spaces.
- 12. A pier extending into water at a port or harbor site, the pier being comprised of one or more modular caissons, each modular caisson being constructed of one or more floatable parts preconstructed onshore and transported in the water to the port or harbor site, the wharf having a pair of opposed docking sides having a shape and length effective to enable marine vessels to dock alongside both docking sides of the pier, and cargo transferring means movable lengthwise along the pier for directly transferring cargo from a vessel docked along one docking side of the pier to a vessel docked along the other docking side of the pier.
- 13. A pier according to claim 12; wherein the cargo transferring means comprises a cargo crane movable lengthwise along the pier.
- 14. A pier according to claim 12; wherein the cargo transferring means comprises a cargo crane movable along guideways running lengthwise along the pier.
- 15. A pier according to claim 12; wherein each floatable part of the modular caisson has trim and ballast tanks for precisely trimming and ballasting the floatable part to enable precise positioning thereof at the port or harbor site.
- 16. A pier according to claim 15; wherein each modular caisson has one or more internal storage spaces.
- 17. A pier according to claim 16; wherein the trim and ballast tanks are located inside each floatable part in spaces separate from the one or more storage spaces.
- 18. A pier according to claim 12; wherein each modular caisson has one or more internal storage spaces.
