Claims
- 1. A modular computer comprising:a portable computer including a first coupling element disposed on an exterior surface, the portable computer providing a first set of performance characteristics; a first expansion module having a second electrical coupling element on a first exterior surface and a third electrical coupling element on a second exterior surface, the second electrical coupling element detachably enegageable with the first electrical coupling element to mount the first expansion module to said exterior surface of the protable computer, the first expansion module operable to provide, in combination with the portable computer, a second set of performance characteristics; and a second module detachably engageable with the third electrical coupling element to mount the second module to the second exterior surface of the first expansion module and to electrically couple the portable computer to the second module to provide, in combination with the portable computer, a third set of performance characteristics.
- 2. The computer of claim 1 wherein the first expansion module comprises a multimedia module.
- 3. The computer of claim 2 wherein the first expansion module includes a CD ROM drive.
- 4. The computer of claim 2 wherein the first expansion module includes a battery port.
- 5. The computer of claim 2 wherein the first expansion module includes a musical instrument digital interface/game port connector.
- 6. The computer of claim 2 wherein the first expansion module includes speakers.
- 7. The computer of claim 1 wherein the second set of performance characteristics include at least one characteristic selected from the group consisting of multimedia capabilities, enhanced sound production, increased memory capacity, faster computing speed, and extended battery capability.
- 8. The computer of claim 1 wherein the portable computer includes a keyboard integrated within an upper surface, wherein the first coupling element is disposed on an exterior surface of the portable computer which is in a plane substantially parallel to a plane which includes said upper surface.
- 9. The computer of claim 1 wherein the second module comprises a docking module, the docking module providing an interface between the portable computer and at least one of a keyboard, a monitor, a printer, a scanner, or another computer.
- 10. The computer of claim 1 wherein the second module provides an interface between the portable computer and a network.
- 11. The computer of claim 1 wherein the third set of performance characteristics include at least one characteristic selected from the group consisting of an enlarged keyboard, an enlarged monitor, a higher resolution monitor, a different pointing device, an enlarged speaker, an enhanced fidelity speaker, a printer, a scanner and network interface capabilities.
- 12. The computer of claim 1 wherein the combination of the portable computer and the second module is functional without either being electrically coupled to the first expansion module.
- 13. The computer of claim 12 wherein the modular computer further comprises an adapter to facilitate coupling of the first electrical coupling element with an electrical coupling element of the second module.
- 14. The computer of claim 1 wherein the portable computer includes at least one component selected from the group consisting of an external disk drive, a pointing device interchangeable without tools, and a battery handle.
- 15. A modular computer comprising:a first computer module including a keyboard and a display integral therewith, the first computer module further including a first electrical coupling element disposed on an exterior surface, the first computer module operable when the first electrical coupling element is electrically uncoupled from another element; a second module including a second electrical coupling element on a first exterior surface of the second module and a third electrical coupling element on a second exterior surface of the second module, the second module being detachably mountable to the first computer module by operative engagement bertween the first electrical coupling element and the second electrical coupling element; and a third module including a fourth electrical coupling element detachably engageable with the third electrical coupling element of the second computer module to mount the third module to second exterior surface of the second module, the third module funtional in a first configuration including the first computer module and the second module or, alternatively, in a second configuration including the first computer module but not the second! computer module.
- 16. The computer of claim 15 wherein the second module comprises a multimedia module.
- 17. The computer of claim 16 wherein the second module includes a CDROM drive and a speaker.
- 18. The computer of claim 15 wherein second module provides a set of performance characteristics including at least one characteristic selected from the group consisting of multimedia capabilities, enhanced sound production, increased memory capacity, faster computing speed, and extended battery capability.
- 19. The computer of claim 15 wherein the first electrical coupling element is disposed on an exterior surface of the first computer module which is in a plane substantially parallel to a plane which includes the keyboard.
- 20. The computer of claim 15 wherein the third module comprises a docking module, the docking module providing an electrical interface between the portable computer and at least one of a keyboard, a monitor, a printer, a scanner, or another computer.
- 21. The computer of claim 15 wherein the third module includes a power source for providing power to the first computer module.
- 22. The computer of claim 15 wherein the third module provides a set of performance characteristics including at least one characteristic selected from the group consisting of an enlarged keyboard, an enlarged monitor, a higher resolution monitor, a different pointing device, an enlarged speaker, an enhanced fidelity speaker, a printer, a scanner and network interface capabilities.
- 23. The computer of claim 15 wherein the modular computer further comprises an adapter to facilitate electrical coupling of the first electrical coupling element with an electrical coupling element of the second module.
- 24. A modular computer comprisinga first computer module including a keyboard and a display integral therewith, the first computer module further including a first electrical coupling element disposed on an exterior surface of the first computer module, the first computer module providing a first set of performance characteristics; a second module including a CD-ROM and speakers, the second module further including a second electrical coupling element on a first exterior surface of the second module and a third coupling element on a second exterior surface of the second module, the second module being detachably mountable to said exterior surface of the first computer module by engagement between the first electrical coupling element and the second electrical coupling element; and a third module including a fourth electrical coupling element detachably engageable with the third coupling element of the second module to mount the third module to the second exterior surface of the second module, the third module including an electrical energy supply element for providing power to the modular computer, the third module in a first configuration including the first computer module and the second module or, alternatively, in a second configuration including the first computer module but not the second module.
- 25. The computer of claim 24 wherein the second module further comprises at least one port connection.
- 26. The computer of claim 24 wherein the electrical energy supply element comprises an AC power supply.
- 27. The computer of claim 24 wherein the third module comprises a docking module.
