2. Description of the Related Art

The broad concept of ice chests or coolers is generally known. However, these inventions usually involve stand-alone apparatuses that are not well suited for transporting items at different temperatures.

It is also known to use ice chests or coolers with auxiliary storage compartments. However, these auxiliary storage compartments are unable to be detached and used separately as a self-contained unit.

Additionally, it is known to use soft-sided ice chests. However, these soft-side ice chests are not able to support totes in a well-balanced manner.

It is also known to use soft-sided ice chests with auxiliary storage compartments. However, these auxiliary storage compartments usually involve a small pocket or an additional chamber in the lid and are not detachable for use as a separate self-contained unit.

Further, it is known to use soft-sided ice chests that use straps. However, these inventions often use straps for merely carrying the ice chests and are not utilized for securing detachable totes.

It is also known to use soft-sided ice chests that use zippers. However, these inventions limit the use of zippers to access the interior of the ice chest or a pocket and are not generally used to connect detachable totes in a well-balanced manner.

Additionally, it is also known to use known to modular ice chests. However, the modular ice chests usually utilize inserts for specific functions, such as can holders or light attachments.

Moreover, ice chests that use totes are also known. However, theses inventions do not take into account balancing for compact portability.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

Ice chests or coolers are insulated containers, which are commonly used for transporting items that require to be maintained within a certain temperature range. When maintaining cold temperatures, ice chests or coolers often generate an accumulation of moisture within the container either due to melting ice or condensation, which may damage items that are susceptible to moisture. Similarly, when maintaining warm temperatures, moisture may accumulate in the container from the condensation of steam. Ice chests or coolers are useful for transporting food or drink; however, sometimes it is also desirable to simultaneously transport items that are maintained at temperatures that differ from that of the ice chest or cooler, especially with items that may be damaged at extreme temperatures or by moisture and separately transporting these items may be problematic. Theses other items may be stored in separate containers from an ice chest or cooler; however, particular problems and difficulties arise in transporting these multiple containers, which can result in lost containers or requiring multiple trips to transfer the containers to the point of use. Additionally, the efficient transport of sets of items that are maintained at different temperatures requires the management of weight distribution and a balanced center of mass. Furthermore, when all items being transported require the same temperature, dedicated compartments for other temperatures are merely wasted space. Because of these problems, the challenge presented is to develop a modular apparatus that allows a cooler, which substantially maintains its interior temperature, and detachable tote, which may used for transporting other items, to be securely affixed together in a well-balanced manner, which allows for the efficient transport of the combined unit. The Modular Cooler Apparatus and System invention was developed in part to provide a modular apparatus that provides an option for transporting sets of items at different temperatures.

In broad embodiment, the present invention relates to an apparatus for transporting sets of items at different temperatures using a modular tote and cooler system, which comprises a modular cooler, a detachable modular tote, and a means of securely affixing the modular tote to the top of the modular cooler for facilitating compact portability. It should be understood by one familiar with the art that the coolers in the present invention include any type of insulated container, which is intended to store items at non-ambient temperatures. Additionally, it should be understood by one familiar with the art that the totes of the present invention encompass bags, sacks, boxes, totes or any other containers for dry goods or items that are stored at ambient temperatures, which attach to the top of coolers in well-balanced and stable manners.

In more preferred embodiments, the present invention relates to an apparatus for transporting sets of items at different temperatures comprising a soft-sided modular cooler, which comprises an insulated base and an insulated lid that connect together in a sealable fashion using a water proof zipper opening and strap connection points; a detachable soft-sided tote, which comprises a canvas exterior, a pocket, handle straps, and strap connection points; and connecting straps comprising seatbelt webbing, stitched loops, an tension locks with gates, which securely bind the detachable tote to the top of the cooler in a well-balanced fashion. A drawstring bag may also be disposed within the detachable tote. Since the tote is detachable, the cooler and tote may optionally be used separately. The strap system allows the ice chest and tote pack to be combined into a single, well-balanced unit with a stable center of mass, although it should be understood by one familiar with the art that other connection systems could be used to securely mount the tote to the top of the cooler. When not is use, the soft-side cooler and soft-sided tote may be collapsed in order to minimize the space needed for storage.

In other preferred embodiments, the modular tote and modular cooler connect together using a zipper system, which eliminates the use of buckle and belts, although it should be understood by one familiar with the art that other connection systems could be used to securely mount the modular tote to the top of the modular cooler.

In other preferred embodiments, the modular tote and modular cooler are rounded in order to reduce the amount of material used in the apparatus and to minimize the surface area relative to the interior volume of the modular tote and modular cooler. It should be understood by one familiar with the art that other shapes could be used for the modular tote and the modular cooler.

In other more preferred embodiments, the present invention also relates to apparatus for transporting sets of items at different temperatures, the apparatus comprising: a modular tote, the modular tote comprising an accessible inner space, one or more horizontal tote straps, a tote top, and a tote bottom; a modular cooler, the modular cooler comprising an insulated inner chamber, a cooler access door, one or more horizontal cooler straps, a cooler top, and a cooler bottom; and a detachable strap system, the detachable strap system comprising a plurality of vertical straps, the vertical straps comprising a vertical strap top and a vertical strap bottom, a plurality of bottom straps, the bottom straps depending from the vertical strap bottoms, handles, the handles depending from the vertical strap tops; wherein the modular tote stores the items at ambient temperature; the modular cooler stores the items at non-ambient temperature; the modular tote may be detached and used by itself; the modular cooler may be detached and used by itself; and the modular tote and the modular cooler are joined into a combined unit with compact portability by inserting the handles of the detachable strap system under the horizontal cooler straps of the modular cooler, then inserting the handles of the detachable strap system under the horizontal tote straps of the modular tote, and then drawing the handles upward until the bottom straps are firmly against the cooler bottom, so that the tote bottom of the modular tote firmly contacts the cooler top of the modular cooler in a well-balanced manner.

In the most preferred embodiments, the present invention relates to an apparatus for transporting sets of items at different temperatures, the apparatus comprising: a modular tote, the modular tote comprising an accessible inner space, handles, one or more tote connectors, the tote connectors comprising hardware that connects to other the hardware, and a bottom; a modular cooler, the modular cooler comprising an insulated inner chamber, a cooler access door, one or more cooler connectors, the cooler connectors comprising the hardware that connects to other the hardware, and a top; and one or more detachable shoulder straps, the detachable shoulder straps comprising a strap, one or more tote strap connectors, the tote strap connectors comprising the hardware that connects to other the hardware; and one or more cooler strap connectors, the cooler strap connectors comprising the hardware that connects to other the hardware; wherein the modular tote stores the items at ambient temperature; the modular cooler stores the items at non-ambient temperature; the modular tote may be detached and used by itself; the modular cooler may be detached and used by itself; the modular tote connects to the modular cooler by connecting the tote connectors to the cooler connectors, so that the bottom of the modular tote firmly contacts the top of the modular cooler in a well-balanced manner, in order to form a combined unit with compact portability; and the detachable shoulder straps connect to the combined unit by connecting the tote strap connectors to the tote connectors and by connecting the cooler strap connectors to the cooler connectors, so that the combined unit may be supported by the detachable shoulder straps in a well-balanced manner. In sum, the Modular Cooler Apparatus and System invention provides an efficient and modular solution for conveniently transporting sets of items that require to be maintained at different temperatures.
