Abstract
A modular decking system that includes prefabricated modular decking panels available in a variety of lengths utilized to build a separate deck to an individual's desired size and layout. The prefabricated modular decking panels are made of pressure-treated 2″×6″ lumber studs, deck-boards, joist hangers, and deck screws that are inserted into a frame made of previously installed posts and headboards. The modular decking system allows for quick installation and set-up. The modular decking panels are easily deconstructed and transported for use in multiple locations. In an alternate embodiment, an additional brace is used to support a 4″×4″ post to adapt the modular decking panels for use as a temporary on-location flatform. Multiple modular decking systems can be fastened together to customize an overall flatform needed at a specific location as well. The modular decking system includes a corresponding method for assembling.
Description
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a decking system. More particularly, the present invention relates to a modular decking system.


Having a deck attached to your home provides an optimal space for entertaining and numerous other activities. However, building a deck takes a significant amount of work requiring several materials and specific tools an individual may not ordinarily have on hand, which may lead to a time-consuming and very expensive project. Furthermore, if an individual moves, they are forced to leave behind the deck they invested so much time and money into building.


Accordingly, a need remains for a modular decking system that is easy to build, is affordable, and is able to be transported and reused in multiple locations.


In light of the modular decking systems disclosed in the known art, it is submitted that the present invention substantially diverges in functional and design elements from the known art and consequently it is clear that there is a need in the art for an improvement to existing modular decking systems. In this regard the present invention substantially fulfills these needs.


SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

In view of the foregoing disadvantages inherent in the types of modular decking systems and similar devices now present in the known art, the present invention provides a modular decking system that may be relatively quick and easy to assemble, whereby an individual may assemble the entire modular decking system in as little as a day.


In one embodiment, the modular decking system comprises a plurality of prefabricated modular decking panels, a plurality of evenly spaced trusses disposed underneath the prefabricated modular decking panels to support the prefabricated modular decking panels, a frame having a plurality of previously installed posts and a plurality of headboards, a plurality of deck screws attaching the prefabricated modular decking panels to the frame, a plurality of joist hangers disposed on the frame to support each of the plurality of trusses, and a plurality of corner brackets disposed on each corner of the frame to provide additional support at each corner of the frame and a plurality of instructions that are adapted to enable a person to self-assemble the modular decking system.


One object of the present invention is to provide a modular decking system that allows for relatively quick installation and set-up.


One object of the present invention is to provide a modular decking system that is easily deconstructed and transported for use in multiple locations.


One object of the present invention is to provide a modular decking system that includes multiple platforms fastened together to customize the size of the overall platform needed at a certain location.


One object of the present invention is to provide a modular decking system that is in a kit with a plurality of instructions that enable a person to self-assemble the modular decking system.


One object of the present invention is to provide a modular decking system that includes a temporary stand that allows a user to create the modular decking system anywhere.


One object of the present invention is to provide a modular decking system that includes a corresponding method for assembling.


Other objects, features, and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying figures.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

Reference is made herein to the attached figures. For the purposes of presenting a brief and clear description of the present invention, the preferred embodiment will be discussed as used for providing a modular decking system 100. The figures are intended for representative purposes only and should not be considered to be limiting in any respect.


Referring now to FIGS. 1 and 3, there are shown a top view and a bottom view of an embodiment of a modular decking system 100.


The modular decking system 100 may include a plurality of prefabricated modular decking panels 110, a plurality of trusses 120, and a plurality of deck screws 130.


The prefabricated modular decking panels 110 may be available in a variety of lengths utilized to build the modular decking system 100 to an individual's desired size and layout. The prefabricated modular decking panels 110 may be designed in a way that they may also be adapted for composite decking.


The trusses 120 may be evenly spaced and are disposed underneath the prefabricated modular decking panels 110 to support the prefabricated modular decking panels 110.


The deck screws 130 may be used to attach the prefabricated modular decking panels 110 to the frame (FIG. 2, 140) to assemble the modular decking system 100.


Referring now to FIGS. 2 and 4, there are shown two perspective views of an embodiment of a modular decking system 100.


The modular decking system 100 may be further comprised of a frame 140, a plurality of joist hangers 150, and a plurality of corner brackets 160.


The frame 140 may be comprised of a plurality of previously installed posts 142 and a plurality of headboards 144 from another structure such as a house (not shown) or the like. The joist hangers 150 may be disposed on the frame 140 to support the trusses 120. The corner brackets 160 may be disposed on each corner of the frame 140 to provide additional support at each corner of the frame 140.


In an alternate embodiment, the modular decking system 100 may be in a kit 170 that may include the prefabricated modular decking panels 110, the trusses 120, the deck screws 130, the joist hangers 150, the corner brackets 160, and a plurality of instructions 172 that enable a person to self-assemble the modular decking system 100.


The modular nature of the modular decking system 100 may allow for quick installation and set-up. The modular decking panels 110 may be easily deconstructed and transported for use in multiple locations.



FIG. 5A shows a top perspective view of an embodiment of the modular decking system 100.


The modular decking system 100 may include the prefabricated modular decking panels 110, the trusses 120, and the deck screws 130 as previously illustrated and described in FIG. 1 and its description.


The prefabricated modular decking panels 110 may be further comprised of a plurality of pressure treated 2″×6″ lumber studs 112 or the like. The trusses 120 may be made of material selected from the group consisting of wood, metal, steel, or the like. The deck screws 130 may be inserted into a plurality of corresponding preset apertures 132 disposed on top of the prefabricated modular decking panels 110 to eliminate drilling into the prefabricated modular decking panels 110.



FIG. 5B shows a bottom perspective view of an embodiment of the modular decking system 100.


The modular decking system 100 may include the frame 140 illustrated and described in previous FIG. 2 and its description. More specifically, the frame 140 may include an inner frame 142 and an outer frame 144 that may extend around an inner perimeter of the modular decking system 100 for additional strength. An additional brace 180 may include a 4″×4″ post 182 to provide additional strength for the modular decking panels 110 for use as a temporary on location platform. The multiple modular decking systems 100 may also be fastened together to customize the size of the platform needed at a certain location.



FIG. 5C shows a front perspective view of an embodiment of the modular decking system 100.


The modular decking system 100 may include the prefabricated modular decking panels 110 coupled to the frame 140 with the deck screws 130 set within the corresponding preset apertures 132 disposed on top of the prefabricated modular decking panels 110.



FIG. 5D shows an overhead perspective view of an embodiment of the modular decking system 100 installed on a ground surface 300.


The ground surface 300 may be a relatively flat surface or the like and the modular decking system 100 may be disposed directly on the ground surface 300.



FIG. 5E shows a side exploded perspective view of an embodiment of the modular decking system 100 with a stand 190.


The stand 190 may be a temporary stand 190A or the like having a pair of parallel wooden footers 192, four vertical posts 194, and a pair of parallel wooden supports 196. The stand 190 may support an approximate 8′×8′ deck that may be installed anywhere.


The pair of parallel wooden footers 192 may include a pair of 2″×6″ planks 192A or the like disposed flat on a ground surface 300 parallel to each other. The four vertical posts 194 may each be attached to the pair of parallel wooden footers 192 with a first plurality of truss plates 194A or the like and extend perpendicular upwards from the pair of parallel wooden footers 192 forming four end corners 194B. The four vertical posts 194 may be four 4″×4″s or the like. The pair of parallel wooden supports 196 may be attached on top of each of the four vertical posts 194 with a second plurality of truss plates 194C or the like and a plurality of lag bolts 194D at an approximate 90-degree angle to the pair of parallel wooden footers 192. The pair of parallel wooden supports 196 may be a pair of 2″×6″ planks or a pair of 4″×4″s or the like.


There may be one or more modular decking systems 100 that rest on top of the pair of parallel wooden supports 196 that may be slid along the length of the pair of parallel wooden supports 196. FIG. 5E shows a pair of modular decking systems 100 that may be slid along the top of the pair of parallel wooden supports 196 from opposite sides of the stand 190 to form another relatively larger modular decking system 100.



FIG. 5F shows an overhead perspective view of an embodiment of the modular decking system with a stand 190.


The stand 190 may be a permanent stand 190B or the like and may have four vertical posts 194 and a pair of parallel wooden supports 196.


The four vertical posts 194 may be inserted into an aperture in the ground surface 300. The aperture may be filled with concrete, dirt or the like to stabilize the four vertical posts 194. The four vertical posts 194 may be four 4″×4″s or the like. The pair of parallel wooden supports 196 may be attached on top of each of the four vertical posts 194 with a second plurality of truss plates 194C or the like and a plurality of lag bolts 194D.



FIG. 6 shows a flowchart of a method for assembling a modular decking system 200.


The overall method 200 may include the steps of obtaining a modular decking system 210, attaching a plurality of prefabricated modular decking panels from the modular decking system to a frame of a preexisting structure with a plurality of deck screws from the modular decking system 220, and disposing a plurality of joist hangers on the frame to support a plurality of trusses 230.


The obtaining step 210 may include the modular decking system as a kit. The kit may be selected from the group consisting of the prefabricated modular decking panels, the trusses, the deck screws, the joist hangers, the corner brackets, and a plurality of instructions that enable a person to self-assemble the modular decking system.


The attaching step 220 may include a plurality of prefabricated modular decking panels from the modular decking system may be attached to a frame of a preexisting structure with a plurality of deck screws from the modular decking system. The prefabricated modular decking panels may be made of composite decking or the like. The frame may include a plurality of previously installed posts and a plurality of headboards. The preexisting structure may be selected from the group consisting of a house, a patio, or a building or the like.


The disposing step 230 may include a plurality of joist hangers on the frame to support a plurality of trusses. The trusses may be evenly spaced and are disposed underneath the prefabricated modular decking panels. The disposing step 230 may additionally include a plurality of corner brackets that are disposed on each corner of the frame to provide additional support at each corner of the frame.


It is therefore submitted that the instant invention has been shown and described in


various embodiments. It is recognized, however, that departures may be made within the scope of the invention and that obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art. With respect to the above description then, it is to be realized that the optimum dimensional relationships for the parts of the invention, to include variations in size, materials, shape, form, function and manner of operation, assembly and use, are deemed readily apparent and obvious to one skilled in the art, and all equivalent relationships to those illustrated in the drawings and described in the specification are intended to be encompassed by the present invention.


Therefore, the foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention.

Claims
  • 1. A modular decking system, comprising: a plurality of prefabricated modular decking panels;a plurality of evenly-spaced trusses disposed underneath the prefabricated modular decking panels to support the prefabricated modular decking panels;a frame having a plurality of previously installed posts and a plurality of headboards;a plurality of deck screws attaching the prefabricated modular decking panels to the frame;a plurality of joist hangers disposed on the frame to support each of the trusses;a plurality of corner brackets disposed on each corner of the frame to provide additional support at each corner of the frame; anda plurality of instructions adapted to enable a person to self-assemble the modular decking system.
  • 2. The modular decking system, according to claim 1, wherein the prefabricated modular decking panels are made of a plurality of pressure treated 2″×6″ lumber studs.
  • 3. The modular decking system, according to claim 1, wherein the prefabricated modular decking panels are made of composite material.
  • 4. The modular decking system, according to claim 1, wherein the trusses are made of material selected from the group consisting of wood, metal, or steel.
  • 5. The modular decking system, according to claim 1, wherein the frame includes an inner frame and an outer frame that extends around an inner perimeter of the modular decking system for additional strength.
  • 6. The modular decking system, according to claim 1, wherein the deck screws are inserted into a plurality of corresponding preset apertures disposed on top of the prefabricated modular decking panels to eliminate drilling into the prefabricated modular decking panels.
  • 7. The modular decking system, according to claim 1, further comprising an additional brace used to support one of the previously installed posts to adapt the modular decking panels for use as a temporary on location platform.
  • 8. The modular decking system, according to claim 7, wherein the additional brace is a 4″×4″ post.
  • 9. The modular decking system, according to claim 1, wherein the modular decking panels are easily deconstructed and transported to a location.
  • 10. The modular decking system, according to claim 9, wherein the modular decking system includes an additional one or more of the modular decking systems fastened together to customize an overall platform needed at the location.
  • 11. The modular decking system, according to claim 1, wherein the modular decking system is installed on a stand.
  • 12. The modular decking system, according to claim 11, wherein the stand is a permanent stand or a temporary stand.
  • 13. The modular decking system, according to claim 1, wherein the modular decking system is a kit selected from the group consisting of the prefabricated modular decking panels, the trusses, the deck screws, the joist hangers, and the corner brackets with a plurality of instructions that is adapted to enable a person to self-assemble the modular decking system.
  • 14. A method for assembling a modular decking system, comprising the steps of: obtaining a modular decking system;attaching a plurality of prefabricated modular decking panels from the modular decking system to a frame of a preexisting structure with a plurality of deck screws from the modular decking system; anddisposing a plurality of joist hangers on the frame to support a plurality of trusses.
  • 15. The method for assembling a modular decking system, according to claim 14, wherein the modular decking system is a kit.
  • 16. The method for assembling a modular decking system, according to claim 15, wherein the kit is selected from the group consisting of the prefabricated modular decking panels, the trusses, the deck screws, the joist hangers, and the corner brackets with a plurality of instructions that enable a person to self-assemble the modular decking system.
  • 17. The method for assembling a modular decking system, according to claim 14, wherein the prefabricated modular decking panels are made of composite decking.
  • 18. The method for assembling a modular decking system, according to claim 14, wherein the frame includes a plurality of previously installed posts and a plurality of headboards.
  • 19. The method for assembling a modular decking system, according to claim 14, wherein the frame is selected from the group consisting of a house, a patio, or a building.
  • 20. The method for assembling a modular decking system, according to claim 14, wherein the trusses are evenly spaced and are disposed underneath the prefabricated modular decking panels and a plurality of corner brackets are disposed on each corner of the frame to provide additional support at each corner of the frame.
