Claims
- 1. A modular furniture arrangement, comprising:
- at least one worksurface panel having a rearward edge;
- a support connected with said worksurface panel to form a modular, freestanding furniture unit supported by said support on a floor surface;
- a plurality of different amenity units, each having a lower end thereof with means for mounting the same on said furniture unit, and an upper end thereof with means for equipping said furniture unit;
- a mounting rail connected with and supported by said furniture unit, and extending generally continuously along said worksurface panel, adjacent the rearward edge thereof; said mounting rail including a plurality of substantially identical apertures spaced generally regularly along the length of said mounting rail; said apertures being shaped to closely receive therein the mounting means on the lower ends of any one of said amenity units to securely yet removably mount the same therein, whereby one or more of said amenity units can be arranged and detachably mounted in said mounting rail substantially anywhere along the rearward edge of said worksurface panel to personalize said furniture unit.
- 2. A modular furniture arrangement as set forth in claim 1, including:
- at least one overhead unit;
- at least two rigid posts, having lower ends thereof adapted for connection with said support and upper ends thereof adapted for connection with said overhead unit;
- at least two mounting apertures disposed through said worksurface panel adjacent opposite rear corners thereof; each of said mounting apertures being shaped to receive an associated one of said posts therethrough;
- at least two caps, each being shaped to close at least a portion of an associated one of said mounting apertures;
- means for detachably supporting each of said caps on said worksurface panel over an associated one of said mounting apertures;
- means for detachably and rigidly connecting the lower ends of said posts with said support in a manner such that said posts extend upwardly from said furniture unit in a generally vertical orientation; and
- means for rigidly connecting the upper ends of said posts with said overhead unit, whereby to mount said overhead unit on said furniture unit, said caps are removed from said worksurface panel, said posts are inserted through said mounting apertures, the lower ends of said posts are securely fastened to said support and the upper ends of said posts are securely fastened to said overhead unit.
- 3. A modular furniture arrangement as set forth in claim 2, wherein:
- said post upper ends are attached adjacent to a rear edge of said overhead unit to support the same in a cantilevered fashion over said worksurface panel.
- 4. A modular furniture arrangement as set forth in claim 3, including:
- at least one privacy screen having first fastening means positioned adjacent opposite sides thereof for mounting said screen on said furniture unit; and
- second fastener means positioned on opposite sides of said furniture unit, and accessible through the mounting apertures in said worksurface panel; said second fastener means releasably engaging said first fastener means to detachably mount said privacy screen on said furniture unit in a generally vertical orientation adjacent the rear edge of said worksurface panel.
- 5. A modular furniture arrangement as set forth in claim 4, including:
- at least two removable grommet covers, each being shaped to selectively cover an associated one of said second fastener means.
- 6. A modular furniture arrangement as set forth in claim 5, wherein:
- said caps and said grommet covers are shaped to mate and collectively cover substantially all portions of the mounting apertures in said worksurface panel.
- 7. A modular furniture arrangement as set forth in claim 6, wherein:
- said support includes at least one intermediate support shaped for connection with an end portion of said worksurface panel, and supporting the same.
- 8. A modular furniture arrangement as set forth in claim 7, wherein:
- said intermediate support has an inverted, generally L-shaped, side elevational configuration including a lower end adapted to abut the floor surface, and an upper arm connected with the end portion of said worksurface panel, whereby said intermediate supports said worksurface panel on the floor surface in a cantilevered fashion, with the space disposed underneath said worksurface panel adjacent to said intermediate support being generally open and unobstructed to facilitate unfettered task chair movement along the forward edge of said worksurface panel.
- 9. A modular furniture arrangement as set forth in claim 8, wherein:
- at least one of said amenity units includes a stanchion at the lower end thereof with said mounting means thereon; said stanchion including means for detachably connecting the same with the upper end of said one amenity unit; said upper end of said one amenity unit including a base shaped for abuttingly supporting said one amenity unit on said worksurface panel, whereby said one amenity unit can be supported either freestanding on said worksurface panel or connected with said stanchion and mounted on said mounting rail above said worksurface panel to permit personalization of said furniture unit.
- 10. A modular furniture arrangement, comprising;
- at least one worksurface panel having a marginal edge;
- a support connected with said worksurface panel to form a modular, freestanding furniture unit supported by said support on a floor surface;
- a plurality of different amenity units, each having a lower end thereof with first mounting means for mounting the same on said furniture unit, and an upper end thereof with means for equipping said furniture unit;
- an upwardly opening channel extending along said worksurface panel adjacent a preselected portion of the marginal edge of said worksurface panel, and shaped to receive the lower end of selected amenity units therein;
- a mounting rail connected with and supported by said furniture unit, and positioned to communicate with said channel in said worksurface panel; said mounting rail including a plurality of substantially identical second mounting means spaced generally regularly along the length of said mounting rail, and positioned fore-to-aft between opposite sides of said channel in said worksurface panel; said second mounting means selectively mating with said first mounting means on the lower ends of any one of said amenity units to securely yet removably mount the same therein, whereby one or more of said amenity units can be arranged and detachably mounted in said mounting rail at selected locations along the marginal edge of said worksurface panel to personalize said furniture unit.
- 11. A modular furniture arrangement as set forth in claim 10, wherein:
- said furniture unit includes a cover panel positioned rearwardly of the preselected portion of the marginal edge of said worksurface panel; and
- said cover panel and the preselected portion of the marginal edge of said worksurface panel define said channel therebetween through which the lower ends of said amenity units pass during mounting of the same in said mounting rail.
- 12. A modular furniture arrangement as set forth in claim 11, including:
- a wireway adapted to receive and retain wiring therein; said wireway being connected with said furniture unit and communicating with an associated portion of said channel, whereby wires associated with said amenity units can be inserted through the associated portion of said channel into the wireway and routed therethrough to a source.
- 13. A modular furniture arrangement as set forth in claim 12, including:
- a flexible cover positioned over the associated portion of said channel to selectively close the same; said cover being locally deformable to permit wiring to be inserted into, and withdrawn from said channel.
- 14. A modular furniture arrangement as set forth in claim 13, wherein:
- said second mounting means comprises a plurality of apertures disposed in-line along the length of said mounting rail, shaped to closely receive the first mounting means of said amenity units therein.
- 15. A modular furniture arrangement as set forth in claim 14, wherein:
- said first mounting means on said amenity units comprises at least two depending prongs which are laterally spaced apart and shaped for close reception in said mounting rail apertures.
- 16. A modular furniture arrangement a set forth in claim 15, wherein:
- said mounting rail apertures comprises a first set of mounting apertures disposed adjacent an upper portion of said mounting rail.
- 17. A modular furniture arrangement as set forth in claim 16, wherein:
- said first set of mounting rail apertures have a generally obround plan configuration;
- said second set of mounting rail apertures have a generally circular plan configuration; and
- said prongs have a generally circular lateral cross-sectional shape which is closely received into said mounting rail apertures.
- 18. A modular furniture arrangement as set forth in claim 17, wherein:
- said prongs each include a lower free end received through an associated one of said second set of mounting apertures, and a shoulder positioned upwardly of said free end, and abutting said mounting rail to support the associated amenity unit therein.
- 19. A modular furniture arrangement a set forth in claim 17, wherein:
- said mounting rail includes a plate extending along the length thereof forwardly of said first and second sets of mounting apertures to isolate said wireway and prevent said amenity prongs from entering the same.
- 20. A modular furniture arrangement, comprising:
- at least one worksurface panel having a marginal edge;
- a support connected with said worksurface panel to form a modular, freestanding furniture unit supported by said support on a floor surface;
- a plurality of different amenity units, each having a lower end thereof with first mounting means for mounting the same on said furniture unit, and an upper end thereof with means for equipping said furniture unit;
- a mounting rail connected with and supported by said furniture unit, and extending along at least a selected portion of the marginal edge of said worksurface panel; said mounting rail including a plurality of substantial identical second mounting means spaced along the length of said mounting rail and selectively mating with said first mounting means on the lower ends of any on of said amenity units to securely yet removably mount the same therein, whereby one or more of said amenity units can be arranged and detachably mounted in said mounting rail to personalize said furniture unit; and
- a wireway adapted to receive and retain wiring therein; said wireway being connected with said furniture unit, and communicating with said mounting rail, whereby wires associated with said amenity units can be readily inserted into the wireway and routed therethrough to a source.
- 21. A modular furniture arrangement as set forth in claim 20, including:
- an access channel disposed in said worksurface panel, shaped to receive the lower end of selected amenity units therein, and communicating with said wireway to provide a space through which the wires associated with said amenity units can be routed.
- 22. A modular furniture arrangement a set forth in claim 21, including:
- a flexible cover positioned over said access channel to selectively close the same; said cover being locally deformable to permit wiring to be inserted into, and withdrawn from said access channel.
- 23. A modular furniture arrangement as set forth in claim 22, wherein:
- said mounting rail apertures comprise a first set of mounting apertures disposed adjacent an upper portion of said mounting rail; and
- said mounting rail includes a second set of mounting apertures disposed adjacent a lower portion thereof, and arranged generally vertically in-line with said first set of mounting apertures, whereby each of said amenity prongs is received within a generally vertically aligned pair of said mounting apertures to securely support the associated amenity unit.
- 24. A modular furniture arrangement as set forth in claim 23, wherein:
- said mounting rail includes a plate extending along the length thereof forwardly of said first and second sets of mounting apertures to isolate said wireway and prevent said amenity prongs from entering the same.
- 25. In a modular furniture arrangement, the improvement of a furniture unit particularly adapted for use in conjunction with both open and closed office plans, comprising:
- a worksurface panel having a front edge, a rear edge, and opposite side edges;
- a support connected with said worksurface panel to form a modular, freestanding furniture unit capable of being supported directly on a floor surface;
- a back panel operably connected with said furniture unit, and disposed adjacent the rearward edge of said worksurface; said back panel having a lower edge, and an upper edge, which in conjunction with the front and side edges of said worksurface, define a predetermined, plan footprint for said furniture unit to facilitate planning furniture arrangements in various office spaces;
- a utility raceway adapted to communicate utilities and the like to said furniture arrangement;
- an outwardly opening recess extending generally continuously along said furniture unit, below the lower edge of said back panel, and shaped to removably receive said utility raceway therein;
- a privacy screen adapted for imparting at least some degree of visual privacy to said furniture unit; and
- means for detachably connecting said privacy screen with said furniture unit, and positioning the same along the rear edge of said worksurface in substantial vertical alignment with said back panel, so as not to vary the predetermined plan footprint of said furniture unit, whereby connection of said utility raceway and said privacy screen with said furniture unit especially adapts the same for open office plans, and disconnection of said utility raceway and said privacy screen from said furniture unit especially adapts the same for closed office plans.
- 26. A modular furniture arrangement as set forth in claim 25, including:
- at least one overhead unit adapted for storing articles therein, and having a rearward face; and
- means for detachably connecting said overhead unit with said furniture unit, and positioning the same along the rear edge of said worksurface, with the rearward face of said overhead unit in substantial vertical alignment with said back panel, so as not to vary the predetermined plan footprint of said furniture unit.
- 27. A modular furniture arrangement as set forth in claim 26, including:
- at least two mounting apertures disposed through said worksurface panel adjacent opposite rear corners thereof; each of said mounting apertures being shaped to receive therethrough said privacy screen connecting means, and said overhead unit connecting means;
- at least two caps, each being shaped to close at least a portion of an associated one of said mounting apertures; and
- means for detachably supporting each of said caps on said worksurface panel over an associated one of said mounting apertures.
- 28. A modular furniture arrangement as set forth in claim 27, including:
- a plurality of different amenity units, each having a lower end thereof with means for mounting the same on said furniture units, and an upper end thereof with means for equipping said furniture unit;
- a mounting rail connected with and supported by said furniture unit, and extending along at least a portion of the rear edge of said worksurface panel; said mounting rail including a plurality of substantially identical apertures spaced generally regularly along the length of said mounting rail, and being shaped to closely receive therein the mounting means on the lower ends of any one of said amenity units to securely yet removably mount the same therein, being whereby one or more of said amenity units can be arranged and detachably mounted in said mounting rail along the rearward edge of said worksurface panel to personalize said furniture unit, without varying the predetermined plan footprint of said furniture unit.
- 29. A modular furniture arrangement as set forth in claim 28, wherein:
- at least one of said amenity units includes a stanchion at the lower end thereof with said mounting means thereon; said stanchion including means for detachably connecting the same with the upper end of said one amenity unit; said upper end of said one amenity unit including a base shape for abuttingly supporting said one amenity unit on said worksurface panel, whereby said one amenity unit can be supported either freestanding on said worksurface panel or connected with said stanchion and mounted on said mounting rail above said worksurface panel on said mounting rail to permit personalization of said furniture unit.
