Claims
- 1. In a prosthesis device intended for hip replacement surgery, wherein the device includes a main body portion and further includes a selected one of a series of adapters for accommodating the device to a particular patient, the improvement comprising a tapered bore formed in the main body portion of the device, each adapter having a shank formed with a taper corresponding to the tapered bore in the main body portion of the device, thereby accommodating tolerance accumulations and providing a first locking means between the adapter and the main body portion of the device, each adapter further having a first series of circumferentially-spaced teeth formed thereon distally of and adjacent to the tapered shank of the device, the main body portion of the device having a second series of corresponding circumferentially-spaced teeth formed thereon distally of and adjacent to the tapered bore, for circumferential indexing of the adapter with respect to the main body portion of the device for adjustment of the device to a particular patent during hip replacement surgery, and the first and second series of teeth being formed with complementary tapers, respectively, thereby providing a second locking means between the adapter and the main body portion of the device.
- 2. The prosthesis device of claim 1, wherein the tapered bore in the main body portion and the corresponding tapered bore on the shank are each formed at an angle of approximately 3° with respect to a center line through the tapered bore in the main body portion and through the shank when the shank is received in the tapered bore.
- 3. The prosthesis device of claim 1, wherein the first and second series of teeth are both formed at an angle of approximately 5° with respect to a center line through the tapered bore in the main body portion and through the shank when the shank is received in the tapered bore.
- 4. The prosthesis device of claim 1, further comprising a plurality of spaced-apart indices formed on the main body portion circumferentially of the tapered bore, an index formed on the adapter wherein aligning the index on the adapter with a selected index on the main body portion provides a selected offset angle between the main body and the adapter.
- 5. The prosthesis device of claim 1, wherein each adapter of the series of adapters has a first end portion and an opposite second end portion, the first end portion being formed at a selected angle with respect to the second end portion, the selected angle being different for each adapter of the series.
- 6. The prosthesis device of claim 1, further comprising the main body portion having a stem having a lower portion, the lower portion having a distal tip and an intermediate annular shoulder, the lower portion having an axial length between the distal tip and the annular shoulder,
a unitary, substantially metal sleeve having an axial length, the length being less than the axial length of the lower portion of the stem, the lower portion of the stem being received in the sleeve such that the stem may have axial movement and rotational movement within the sleeve and the sleeve will not likely abut against the annular shoulder on the lower portion of the stem.
- 7. The prosthesis device of claim 1, wherein the main body portion has an upper portion, a collar being formed on the upper portion around the tapered bore, the collar extending outwardly from the upper portion of he main body portion.
- 8. The prosthesis device of claim 1, wherein the main body portion has an upper portion, the upper portion having a top surface formed at an angle to the upper portion, the tapered bore being formed in the top surface.
- 9. In an orthopedic prosthesis, wherein a first member cooperates with a selected one of a plurality of second members, and wherein said selected one of the second members is circumferentially adjusted with respect to the first member for optimum application to a specific patient, the improvement comprising a first set of internal tapered teeth on the first member cooperating with a corresponding second set of external tapered teeth on said selected one of the plurality of second members, the corresponding first and second sets of teeth having cooperating respective tapered surfaces, and the corresponding first and second sets of teeth with their cooperating respective tapered surface having respective dimensions and tolerances to assure that the respective tapered surfaces are engaged and locked together before the corresponding first and second sets of teeth bottom with respect to each other.
- 10. A method for inserting a prosthesis for hip surgery in a patient comprising the steps of:
providing a prosthesis having a main body portion with a tapered bore in a top portion and a stem depending therefrom, the tapered bore having a first series of circumferentially-spaced tapered teeth formed therein, incising the hip of the patient to expose the neck of the femur of the patient, reaming the femur of the patient forming a canal therein, inserting the stem of the main body of the prosthesis into the canal in the femur of the patient, such that the tapered bore in the main body portion extends out of the canal in the femur, reaming the acetabulum of the patient, placing an acetabulum trial hip sizer in the reamed acetabulum and assessing position and cortical bone contact, placing a trial liner in the acetabulum trial cup sizer, providing a series of adapters, each adapter of the series having a first end portion and a second end portion, the first end portion being formed at a selected angle with respect to the second end portion, the selected angle being different for each adapter of the series, the first end portion of each adapter having a tapered shank formed thereon, the tapered shank corresponding with the tapered bore in the main body portion of the prosthesis, each adapter further having a second series of circumferentially-spaced tapered teeth formed adjacent to the tapered shank, selecting one of the series of adapters and experimentally placing the tapered shank of the adapter in the tapered bore in the main body, placing a modular femoral head on the second end of the adapter, determining the cooperation of the selected one adapter and modular femoral head with the anatomy of the patient, progressively selecting others of the series of adapters and experimentally placing the tapered shank of the adapter into the tapered bore in the main body, placing the modular femoral head in the second end of the others of the series of adapters and determining the cooperation of the others of the series of adapters and modular femoral head with the anatomy of the patient, determining the adapter of the series which most nearly conforms to the anatomy of the patient and positioning said adapter in the tapered bore in the main body with the modular femoral head, and removing the trial liner and the acetabulum trial cup sizer, driving the adapter into the main body such that the first series of tapered teeth and engage and lock with the second series of tapered teeth.
