Claims
- 1. A method to ameliorate the virulence of bacterial infection which method comprises administering to a subject in need of such amelioration an effective amount of a compound that inhibits transmethylation catalyzed by bacterial enzymes.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said bacterial enzyme is S-adenosyl methionine synthetase (SAMS), S-adenosyl homocysteine hydroxylase (SAHH), an RNA transmethylase or a DNA transmethylase.
- 3. The method of claim 2 wherein said compound is an adenosine analog or homocysteine analog.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein said adenosine analog is adenosine arabinoside.
- 5. A method to ameliorate the virulence of a bacterial infection which method comprises administering to a subject in need of such amelioration an amount of a methionine-depleting agent sufficient to effect such amelioration.
- 6. The method of claim 5 wherein said methionine-depleting agent is methioninase.
- 7. A method to identify a compound that modulates the virulence of bacterial infection which method comprises assessing the ability of a candidate compound to inhibit a enzyme that mediates or affects the level of transmethylation, wherein a compound which exhibits inhibition said enzyme is identified as a compound which ameliorates bacterial virulence.
- 8. The method of claim 7 wherein said enzyme is SAMS, SAHH, an RNA transmethylase, or a DNA transmethylase.
- 9. The method of claim 8 wherein said enzyme is SAHH or Dam.
