Claims
- 1. A module adapted to be inserted into a computer system having a system board, and a power supply, said system board having a plurality of first connector elements electrically interconnected in a first key configuration, said module comprising:
- a plug-in assembly adapted for connection to the system board; and
- an electrical keying circuit to enable operation of said module only when properly configured by said plug-in assembly in said system board, said keying circuit comprising:
- a plurality of second connector elements located upon said module and adapted to engage the first connector elements located upon the system board;
- a plurality of directional electrical connections configured on said module and separately engaging said plurality of connector elements to define a second key configuration, each of said directional electrical connections conducting only in one direction; and
- electrical power supply means for supplying enabling voltage from said power supply to said module only when said first and second key configurations enable a series connection through said plurality of directional electrical connections for conduction in a single direction.
- 2. The module of claim 1 wherein each of said directional electrical connections include a diode.
- 3. An electronic module for use in a computer system having one or more plug-in module receptacles, said module comprising:
- a plug-in assembly adapted for connection to a module receptacle; and
- an electrical keying circuit electrically configured to prevent operation of said module unless properly configured by said plug-in assembly in a receptacle, said keying circuit comprising:
- a plurality of connector elements located upon each said module to engage a like plurality of connector elements located upon said system board;
- a plurality of electrical connections separately engaging said connector elements to define a key configuration, wherein each of said connections include a diode connected between a pair of said connector elements for conduction in either a first or a second direction;
- a power supply connection; and
- an electrical circuit supplying an enabling voltage from said power supply connection to electronic components via said plurality of connector elements and electrical connections in a unique pattern to prevent supplying said enabling voltage unless the proper one of said modules is connected by the proper one of said plug-in assemblies to said system board, wherein said electrical circuit enables a series connection through said diodes such that all of the diodes for a module are connected in the same direction for conduction of current.
