Claims
- 1. A method of partially curing a polymerizable monomer or monomer mixture to form a soft contact lens, said method comprising:
- (a) depositing a polymerizable monomer or monomer mixture in a contact lens mold having a first and a second half with said monomer therebetween;
- (b) clamping said first mold half into engagement with said second mold half with a plurality of engagement members, said engagement members engaging only one of said mold halves, each of said members engaging said one of said mold halves with a predetermined pressure such that deformation of said one of said mold halves does not occur; and
- (c) exposing said monomer to radiation to polymerize said monomer to a partially cured state.
- 2. A method of partially curing a polymerizable monomer or monomer mixture as claimed in claim 1 wherein steps a-b are conducted in a low oxygen environment.
- 3. A method of partially curing a polymerizable monomer or monomer mixture as claimed in claim 1 wherein said radiation is actinic, electron beam or a radioactive source of energy.
- 4. A method of partially curing a polymerizable monomer or monomer mixture as claimed in claim 3 wherein said source of energy is an ultraviolet lamp.
- 5. A method of partially curing a polymerizable monomer or monomer mixture as claimed in claim 1 wherein said monomer is exposed to 2 to 150 mW/cm.sup.2 of ultraviolet radiation at a wavelength of 320 to 390 nm.
- 6. A method of partially curing a polymerizable monomer or monomer mixture as claimed in claim 4 wherein said monomer is exposed to 2.4 mW/cm.sup.2 of ultraviolet radiation at a wavelength of 350 nm.
- 7. A method of partially curing a polymerizable monomer or monomer mixture as claimed in claim 5 wherein said precure radiation is set for a time period of 1 to 60 sec.
- 8. A method of partially curing a polymerizable monomer or monomer mixture as claimed in claim 6 wherein said precure radiation step is 20 to 40 seconds.
- 9. A method of partially curing a polymerizable monomer or monomer mixture as claimed in claim 1 wherein the force exerted during the clamping lstep is varied from 0.5 to 2.0 Kgf/per lens.
- 10. A method of curing a polymerizable monomer or monomer mixture to form a contact lens, said method comprising:
- (a) depositing a polymerizable monomer or monomer mixture in a contact lens mold having a first and a second half with said monomer therebetween;
- (b) clamping said first mold half into engagement with said second mold half with a plurality of engagement members, said engagement members engaging only one of said mold halves, each of said members engaging said one of said mold halves with a predetermined pressure such that deformation of said one of said mold halves does not occur; and
- (c) exposing said monomer to radiation to polymerize said monomer.
- 11. A method for curing a polymerizable monomer or monomer mixture to form a contact lens, said method comprising the steps of:
- (a) depositing a polymerizable monomer or monomer mixture in a contact lens mold having a first and a second half with said monomer therebetween, each of said mold halves having an annular flange;
- (b) clamping said first mold half into engagement with said second mold half with a plurality of engagement members, each of said members engaging said first mold half with a predetermined pressure, with said annular flanges of said mold halves substantially parallel; and
- (c) exposing said monomer to radiation at a first location to polymerize said monomer to a partially cured state to seal said mold halves together, in alignment, for a subsequent cure step performed at a second location different from said first location to polymerize said monomer to a completely cured state;
- wherein said exposure resulting in said partially cured state and said subsequent cure step are conducted on said monomer while said monomer is enclosed within said sealed mold halves.
- 12. A method of curing a polymerizable monomer or monomer mixture as claimed in claim 11 wherein said clamping step forms a clean lens edge for said contact lens.
- 13. A method of curing a polymerizable monomer or monomer mixture as claimed in claim 11 wherein said clamping step improves centration of said mold halves.
- 14. A method of curing a polymerizable monomer or monomer mixture to form a contact lens, said method comprising:
- (a) depositing a polymerizable monomer or monomer mixture in a contact lens mold having a first and a second half with said monomer therebetween;
- (b) clamping said first mold half into engagement with said second mold half with a plurality of engagement members, each of said members engaging one of said mold halves with a predetermined pressure;
- (c) exposing said monomer to radiation at a first location to polymerize said monomer to a partially cured state; and
- (d) exposing said monomer to radiation at a second location different from said first location to polymerize said monomer to a completely cured state;
- wherein steps (c) and (d) are performed while said monomer is enclosed within said mold halves.
- 15. The method of partially curing a polymerizable monomer or monomer mixture as claimed in claim 1, wherein said members engage said one of said mold halves at evenly distributed spaced locations.
- 16. The method of curing a polymerizable monomer or monomer mixture as claimed in claim 10, wherein said members engage said one of said mold halves at evenly distributed spaced locations.
- 17. The method of curing a polymerizable monomer or monomer mixture as claimed in claim 10, wherein said radiation used in step (c) polymerizes said monomer to a partially cured state.
- 18. The method of curing a polymerizable monomer or monomer mixture as claimed in claim 10, wherein said radiation used in step (c) polymerizes said monomer to a completely cured state.
- 19. The method for curing a polymerizable monomer or monomer mixture as claimed in claim 11, wherein said exposure resulting in said partially cured state is performed while said engagement members are engaging said first mold half, and wherein said subsequent cure step is performed while said engagement members are disengaged from said first mold half.
- 20. The method of curing a polymerizable monomer or monomer mixture as claimed in claim 14, wherein step (c) is performed in a low oxygen environment and step (d) is performed in atmospheric conditions.
