Claims
- 1. A mold having a hexagonal cross-sectional shape, comprising:a mold base having an upwardly facing lower cavity defined by a bottom surface and a pair of side walls, the side walls extending from opposite sides of the bottom surface upwardly away from each other at approximately 120 degrees with respect to the bottom surface, the mold base being configured to receive a plurality of fiber optic cables along a longitudinal length thereof; and a unitary mold cover having a downwardly facing upper cavity defined by a top surface and a pair of side walls, the side walls extending from opposite sides of the top surface downwardly away from each other at approximately 120 degrees with respect to the top surface, the side walls of the upper cavity extending from the top surface for a distance substantially equal to the spacing between the side walls at the intersection between the side walls and the top surface, the mold base being adapted to receive the mold cover with the upper and lower cavities facing each other to define a hexagonal mold cavity the hexagonal mold cavity being used to compress the plurality of fiber optic cables into a bundle having a hexagonal cross section.
- 2. The mold of claim 1 wherein the mold cover is adapted to move toward and away from the mold base to alter the size of the mold cavity.
- 3. The mold of claim 1 wherein the side walls of the lower cavity extend upwardly to enclose the mold cover, and wherein the mold cover has outer side walls that intersect respective side walls of the upper cavity at an angle of 60 degrees so that the outer side wall of the mold cover can flushly contact respective side walls of the lower cavity, the distance between the intersections of each outer side wall and its adjacent upper cavity side wall being substantially equal to the distance that the side walls of the upper cavity extend from the top surface of the upper cavity.
- 4. A mold having a hexagonal cross-sectional shape, comprising:a mold base having an upwardly facing lower cavity defined by a bottom surface and a pair of side walls, the bottom surface and side walls together defining one-half of a hexagon, the mold base being configured to receive a plurality of fiber optic cables along a longitudinal length thereof; and a unitary mold cover having a downwardly facing upper cavity defined by a top surface and a pair of side walls, the top surface and side walls together defining one-half of a hexagon, the mold base being adapted to receive the mold cover with the upper and lower cavities facing each other to define a hexagonal mold cavity, the hexagonal mold cavity being used to compress the plurality of fiber optic cables into a bundle having a hexagonal cross section.
- 5. The mold of claim 1 wherein the mold cover is adapted to move toward and away from the mold base to alter the size of the mold cavity.
- 6. A mold having a cross-sectional shape of a half-hexagon, the mold comprising:a mold base having a bottom surface, the mold base being configured to receive a plurality of fiber optic cables along a longitudinal length thereof; and a unitary mold cover having a top surface, one of the mold base bottom surface or the mold cover top surface forming a cavity defined by an intermediate surface positioned between a pair of side walls, the side walls extending from opposite sides of the intermediate surface away from each other at approximately 120 degrees with respect to the intermediate surface, the side walls of the cavity extending for a distance substantially equal to the spacing between the side walls at the intersection between the side walls and the intermediate surface, the other of the mold base bottom surface on the mold cover top surface forming a flat surface extending between the edges of the side walls, the mold base being adapted to receive the mold cover with the cavity defining a half-hexagonal mold cavity hexagonal mold cavity being used to compress the plurality of fiber optic cables into a bundle having a half-hexagonal cross section.
- 7. The mold of claim 6 wherein the mold cavity is formed in the mold base.
- 8. The mold of claim 6 wherein the mold cover is adapted to move toward and away from the mold base.
- 9. The mold of claim 6 wherein the mold cover comprises a unitary mold cover having an integrally formed top surface side walls.
