- an upper mold and a lower mold which define a substantially rectangular-shaped mold cavity; and
- a first plurality of vents in communication with the mold cavity, and disposed on one side of said substantially rectangular-shaped mold cavity, and a second plurality of vents in communication with the mold cavity and disposed on a second side of said mold cavity which is adjacent said one side, said first and second pluralities of vents being disposed on a part line between said upper mold and said lower mold, each vent having a vent passageway with an entrance and an exit, each said vent passageway being elongated with a width parallel to the part line substantially greater than a thickness orthogonal to the part line to cause liquid foam polymeric composition expanding inside the mold cavity to enter into each said vent passageway entrance but to not exit from each said vent passageway exit to cause at least partial curing of the liquid foam polymeric composition within each said vent passageway, each vent passageway being of a size and elongated shape so that the at least partially cured liquid foam polymeric composition in said vent passageway does not separate from the molded foam article when the upper and lower mold are separated to produce the plurality of ribbon-shaped appendages on the foamed article.
- 2. A mold according to claim 1, wherein said each vent passageway has a substantially rectangular cross-section so that the at least partially cured liquid polymeric foam composition within said vent passageway has a ribbon shape.
- 3. A mold according to claim 2, wherein each said vent passageway has a thickness of from about 0.002 inches to about 0.030 inches.
- 4. A mold according to claim 2, wherein each said vent passageway has a thickness of from about 0.005 inches to about 0.020 inches.
- 5. A mold according to claim 1, wherein each said vent passageway has a thickness of from about 0.002 inches to about 0.030 inches, and a width of up to about 6 inches.
- 6. A mold according to claim 1, wherein the part line between the upper mold and the lower mold is angled in a direction toward one of the upper mold and the lower mold.
- 7. A mold according to claim 1, further comprising a plurality of vents disposed in the part line between said upper mold and said lower mold at corners of said rectangular-shaped mold cavity.
- 8. A mold according to claim 1, wherein at least one of said first and second pluralities of vents is disposed in said lower mold adjacent said part line.
- 9. A mold for producing foamed articles having a plurality of ribbon-shaped appendages disposed on sides thereof, the mold comprising:
- an upper mold and a lower mold which define a substantially rectangular-shaped mold cavity;
- a first plurality of vents disposed on one side of the mold cavity; and
- a second plurality of vents disposed on a second side of the mold cavity which is adjacent to said one side, said first and second pluralities of vents being disposed on a part line between the upper mold and the lower mold, each vent having a vent passageway with an entrance and an exit, each vent passageway having a rectangular-shaped cross-section with a width parallel to the part line being substantially greater than a thickness orthogonal to the part line, each said vent being dimensioned and sized to cause liquid foam polymeric composition expanding inside the mold cavity to enter into each said vent passageway entrance but to not exit from each said vent passageway exit so that at least partially-cured liquid polymeric composition in the vent passageway does not separate from the molded foam article when the upper and lower mold are separated to produce the plurality of ribbon-shaped appendages on the sides of the foamed article.
- 10. A mold according to claim 9, wherein at least one of said first plurality of vents is disposed at a corner of the substantially rectangular-shaped mold cavity.
- 11. A mold according to claim 9, wherein the part line between the upper mold and the lower mold is angled upward in a direction toward the upper mold.
- 12. A mold according to claim 9, wherein said substantially rectangular-shaped mold cavity comprises a substantially square-shaped mold cavity.
- 13. A mold according to claim 9, wherein each said vent passageway has a thickness of from about 0.005 inches to about 0.020 inches, and a width of up to about 6 inches.
- 14. A mold according to claim 9, further comprising a plurality of vent assemblies disposed in the upper mold, each of said vent assemblies having a movable pin disposed therein for expelling at least partially cured polymeric foam composition which has expanded into said vent assemblies.
- 15. A mold according to claim 9, wherein at least one of said first and second pluralities of vents is disposed in said lower mold adjacent said part line.
- 16. A mold for producing foamed articles having a plurality of appendages disposed at sides thereof, the mold comprising:
- a substantially rectangular-shaped upper mold; and
- a substantially rectangular-shaped lower mold which defines, with said upper mold, a substantially rectangular-shaped mold cavity,
- said lower mold having a first plurality of vents disposed along one side of the lower mold at a part line between the upper and lower molds,
- said lower mold having a second plurality of vents disposed on a second side of the lower mold which is adjacent the first side, said second plurality of vents being disposed on the part line between the upper and lower mold,
- each of said first and second pluralities of vents having a vent passageway with an entrance and an exit, each said vent passageway being sized and dimensioned to cause liquid foam polymeric composition expanding inside the mold cavity to enter into each said vent passageway entrance but to not exit from each said vent passageway exit so that at least partial curing of the liquid foam polymeric composition occurs within each said vent passageway so that the at least partially cured liquid foam polymeric composition in each said vent passageway does not separate from the molded foam article when the upper and lower mold are separated so as to produce the plurality of appendages on the sides of the foamed article.
- 17. A mold according to claim 16, wherein at least one of said first plurality of vents is disposed in a corner of the lower mold.
- 18. A mold according to claim 16, wherein each said vent passageway has a substantially rectangular-shaped cross-section.
- 19. A mold according to claim 16, wherein the part line between the upper mold and the lower mold is angled in a direction toward one of the upper mold and the lower mold.
- 20. A mold according to claim 16, wherein each said vent passageway has a thickness of from about 0.002 inches to about 0.03 inches, and a width of from about 0.5 inches to about 6 inches.
- 21. A mold according to claim 16, further comprising a plurality of vent assemblies disposed in the upper mold, each vent assembly having a movable pin disposed therein for clearing at least partially cured polymeric foam composition from within the vent assembly.
- 22. A mold according to claim 16, further comprising a third plurality of vents disposed in a third side of said lower mold, and a fourth plurality of vents disposed in a fourth side of said lower mold.
- 23. A mold according to claim 16, wherein at least one of said first and second pluralities of vents is disposed in said lower mold adjacent said part line.
