Claims
- 1. A molded article of fiber-reinforced plastic obtained by molding a plate material comprising a fibrous reinforcement material and a thermoplastic resin, said plate material having opposed first and second surfaces and a thickness of 1 to 10 mm, wherein a sheet prepreg obtained by impregnating a unidirectionally arranged fiber or woven cloth with a thermoplastic resin is molded integrally with a limited portion of the first surface of the plate material at a location where there is no substantial flow of fiber reinforcement with resin during article molding, in areas of the article where additional reinforcement is required, in areas of the article subject to deformation, or in areas where cracking occurs, and wherein the portion of the resulting molded article is reinforced by the sheet prepreg.
- 2. A molded article according to claim 1, wherein the fibrous reinforcement material of the plate material is a mat reinforcement material.
- 3. A molded article according to claim 1, wherein the plate material is obtained by impregnating the fibrous reinforcement material with a thermoplastic resin.
- 4. A molded article according to claim 1, prepared by a process comprising (i) stacking, prior to molding, a predetermined number of sheet prepregs cut into a desired shape, in at least one of a) ribbed portions of a mold and b) a narrow section of said mold, where only the resin of the plate material, but not the fibrous reinforcement material of the plate material, would substantially flow into the narrow sections thereof, and (ii) after such stacking filling the mold with the plate material.
- 5. A molded article according to claim 1, prepared by stacking one or more sheet prepregs in areas on the plate material where additional reinforcement is required, due to the desired form of the molded article.
- 6. A molded article according to claim 1, wherein the thickness of the sheet prepreg is from 0.1 to 1.0 mm.
- 7. A molded article according to claim 1, wherein the content of the fibrous reinforcement in the plate material is from 30 to 70 wt. %.
- 8. A molded article according to claim 1, wherein the content of the fiber or the woven cloth in the sheet prepreg is from 30 to 90 wt. %.
- 9. A molded article of fiber-reinforced plastic prepared by a process using a plate material comprising a fibrous reinforcement material and a thermoplastic resin, wherein said plate material has opposed first and second surfaces and a thickness of 1 to 10 mm, said process comprising the steps of (i) setting-up a sheet prepreg either a) on the plate material, b) in a mold, or c) on the plate material and in a mold, in areas where the fibrous reinforcement from the plate material would not follow the flow of the resin with substantial uniformity, or in areas where special reinforcement is required, wherein the sheet prepreg is obtained by impregnating a unidirectionally arranged fiber or woven cloth with a thermoplastic resin, and the content of fibrous reinforcement in the plate material is from 30 to 70 wt. %, and (ii) maintaining the plate material above the flow temperature of the thermoplastic resin of the plate material and maintaining the sheet prepreg above the flow temperature of the thermoplastic resin of the sheet prepreg, and compressing them in the mold to integrally mold to obtain said molded article, wherein the sheet prepreg is associated with a limited portion of the first surface of the plate material in the molded article.
- 10. A molded article according to claim 9, wherein the fibrous reinforcement material of the plate material is a mat reinforcement material.
- 11. A molded article according to claim 9, wherein the plate material is obtained by impregnating the fibrous reinforcement material with a thermoplastic resin.
- 12. A molded article according to claim 9, prepared by stacking, prior to molding, a predetermined number of sheet prepregs cut into a desired shape, in at least one of ribbed portions of the mold and narrow sections of the mold, such that only the resin of the plate material, but not the fibrous reinforcement material of the plate material, would substantially flow into the narrow sections thereof, and after such stacking filling the mold with the plate material.
- 13. A molded article according to claim 9, prepared by stacking one or more sheet prepregs in areas on the plate material where additional reinforcement is required, due to the desired form of the molded article.
- 14. A molded article according to claim 9, wherein the thickness of the sheet prepreg is from 0.1 to 1.0 mm.
- 15. A molded article according to claim 9, wherein the content of the fiber or the woven cloth in the sheet prepreg is from 30 to 90 wt. %.
- 16. A molded article according to claim 9, wherein the thickness of the sheet prepreg is from 0.1 to 1.0 mm.
