Claims
- 1. A molding composition comprising:(a) a foamable, moldable fluoropolymer, and (b) a blowing agent for said foamable, moldable fluoropolymer consisting essentially of from 1 to 50% by weight, based on the weight of said molding composition, of a thermally unstable polymer having recurring units, said recurring units consisting essentially of arylene sulfoxide units, said arylene sulfoxide units, under the action of heat, being decomposable into arylene sulfide units, with liberation of oxygen or CO2 or H2O to provide a foaming effect.
- 2. A molding composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein said blowing agent consists essentially of a polyarylene sulfoxide consisting essentially of sulfoxide groups of the formula—(—C6H4—SO—)—.
- 3. A molding composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein the mean molecular weight, Mw, of said polyarylene sulfoxide ranges from 4,000 to 200,000.
- 4. A molding composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein the amount of said blowing agent is from 3 to 30% by weight of said composition.
- 5. A molding composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein said composition is a blended material in which the fluoropolymer and blowing agent are blended together with a filler, a fibrous reinforcing material, a mold processing aid, a UV stabilizer, or a mixture thereof.
- 6. A molding composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein the fluoropolymer and the blowing agent are particulate and the blowing agent is thermally unstable within the temperature range from 240° C. to 360° C.
- 7. A molding composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein the fluoropolymer present is polymer comprising a recurring unit of the formulae (I) to (VII), —(CF2—CF2)m—(CH2—CH2)n— (III)—(CF2—C(Cl)F)m—(CH2—CH2)n— (IV) —CF2—C(Cl)F— (V) —CH2—CF2— (VI) —CHF—CHF— (VII) where R in (I) and (II) is a perfluorinated alkyl radical having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms or a plurality of different radicals of this type, where m and n are each numbers from 0.01 to 1 and the sum of n and m is always 1 and where the fluorine atoms can be partially replaced by chlorine.
