Claims
- 1. A compound of the formula ##STR84## or an external salt thereof, wherein each R.sub.1 is independently hydrogen or C.sub.1-4 alkyl,
- R.sub.8 is hydrogen, C.sub.1-4 alkyl, C.sub.1-4 alkoxy, halo, C.sub.1-4 alkylamino, di-(C.sub.1-4 alkyl)amino, --SO.sub.2 NR.sub.1 R.sub.1 or --CONR.sub.1 R.sub.1,
- wherein each R.sub.1 is independently hydrogen or C.sub.1-4 alkyl,
- R.sub.9 is hydrogen, halo, C.sub.1-4 alkyl, C.sub.1-4 alkoxy, phenoxy, --NHCOR.sub.14, --SO.sub.2 R.sub.14, --SO.sub.2 NR.sub.1 R.sub.1 or --CONR.sub.1 R.sub.1,
- wherein each R.sub.1 is independently hydrogen or C.sub.1-4 alkyl, and
- R.sub.14 is C.sub.1-4 alkyl or phenyl,
- R.sub.10 is hydrogen, halo, C.sub.1-4 alkyl or C.sub.1-4 alkoxy,
- R.sub.13 is hydrogen; amino; (C.sub.1-4 alkyl)carbonylamino; benzamido; substituted benzamido having, on the phenyl ring, 1 or 2 substituents selected from halo, nitro, amino, C.sub.1-4 alkyl and C.sub.1-4 alkoxy; or ##STR85## wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen or C.sub.1-4 alkyl, Y is chloro, hydroxy, amino or an amino group having at least one aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic substituent, and
- Y' is hydroxy, amino or an amino group having at least one aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic substituent,
- each T.sub.a is independently -NR.sub.2 '-Q-NR.sub.3 'R.sub.4 ' or -NR.sub.2 '-Q-N.sup..sym. R.sub.5 'R.sub.6 'R.sub.7 ', wherein R.sub.2 ' is hydrogen or methyl,
- each of R.sub.3 ' and R.sub.4 ' is independently hydrogen, C.sub.1-6 alkyl, n-C.sub.2-3 -hydroxyalkyl or benzyl,
- each of R.sub.5 ' and R.sub.6 ' is independently C.sub.1-6 alkyl, n-C.sub.2-3 hydroxyalkyl or benzyl or
- R.sub.3 ' and R.sub.4 ' or R.sub.5 ' and R.sub.6 ' taken together and with the nitrogen atom to which they are joined form a pyrrolidine, piperidine or morpholine ring,
- R.sub.7 ' is methyl, ethyl or benzyl, and
- Q is linear or branched C.sub.2-6 alkylene,
- each T.sub.Ia is independently --CO--T.sub.a or --SO.sub.2 --T.sub.a,
- wherein T.sub.a is as defined above,
- each Y is independently chloro, hydroxy, amino or an amino group having at least one aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic substituent,
- m is 1 or 2,
- n is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4, and
- p is 0, 1, 2 or 3,
- with the proviso that n+2p.gtoreq.m+1,
- with the provisos that (i) each basic group is independently in free base, internal salt or acid addition salt form, (ii) the positive charge of each cationic group is independently balanced by the negative charge of a --SO.sub.3.sup..crclbar. group of the molecule or an external non-chromophoric anion, and (iii) the number of basic groups in internal salt form and cationic groups the positive charge of which is balanced by the negative charge of a --SO.sub.3.sup..crclbar. group of the molecule does not exceed the number of sulfo groups present in the molecule.
- 2. A compound according to claim 1 having the formula ##STR86## or an external salt thereof, wherein R.sub.8 is hydrogen, C.sub.1-4 alkyl, C.sub.1-4 alkoxy, halo, C.sub.1-4 -alkylamino, di-(C.sub.1-4 alkyl)amino, --SO.sub.2 NR.sub.1 R.sub.1 or --CONR.sub.1 R.sub.1,
- wherein each R.sub.1 is independently hydrogen or C.sub.1-4 alkyl,
- R.sub.13 is hydrogen; amino; (C.sub.1-4 alkyl)carbonylamino; benzamido; substituted benzamido having, on the phenyl ring, 1 or 2 substituents selected from halo, nitro, amino, C.sub.1-4 alkyl and C.sub.1-4 alkoxy; ##STR87## wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen or C.sub.1-4 alkyl, Y is chloro, hydroxy, amino or an amino group having at least one aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic substituent, and
- Y' is hydroxy, amino or an amino group having at least one aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic substituent, and
- each T.sub.Ia is independently --CO--T.sub.a or --SO.sub.2 --T.sub.a,
- wherein T.sub.a is --NR.sub.2 '--Q--NR.sub.3 'R.sub.4 ' or --NR.sub.2 '--Q--N.sup..sym. R.sub.5 'R.sub.6 'R.sub.7 ',
- wherein R.sub.2 ' is hydrogen or methyl,
- each of R.sub.3 ' and R.sub.4 ' is independently hydrogen, C.sub.1-6 alkyl, n-C.sub.2-3 -hydroxyalkyl or benzyl,
- each of R.sub.5 ' and R.sub.6 ' is independently C.sub.1-6 alkyl, n-C.sub.2-3 -hydroxyalkyl or benzyl or
- R.sub.3 ' and R.sub.4 ' or R.sub.5 ' and R.sub.6 ' taken together and with the nitrogen atom to which they are joined form a pyrrolidine, piperidine or morpholine ring,
- R.sub.7 ' is methyl, ethyl or benzyl, and
- Q is linear or branched C.sub.2-6 alkylene,
- with the provisos that (i) each basic group is independently in free base, internal salt or acid addition salt form, (ii) the positive charge of each cationic group is independently balanced by the negative charge of the --SO.sub.3.sup..crclbar. group of the molecule or an external non-chromophoric anion, and (iii) the maximum number of basic groups in internal salt form and cationic groups the positive charge of which is balanced by the negative charge of the --SO.sub.3.sup..crclbar. group of the molecule is one.
- 3. A compound according to claim 2, or an external salt thereof,
- wherein each of R.sub.3 ' and R.sub.4 ' is independently hydrogen, C.sub.1-6 alkyl, n-C.sub.2-3 hydroxyalkyl or benzyl,
- each of R.sub.5 ' and R.sub.6 ' is independently C.sub.1-6 alkyl, n-C.sub.2-3 -hydroxyalkyl or benzyl or
- R.sub.3 ' and R.sub.4 ' or R.sub.5 ' and R.sub.6 ' taken together and with the nitrogen atom to which they are joined are pyrrolidino, piperidino or morpholino,
- Y is chloro, hydroxy, --NR.sub.21 R.sub.22, C.sub.5-6 -cycloalkylamino, anilino or substituted anilino having, on the phenyl ring, 1 or 2 substituents selected from halo, C.sub.1-4 -alkyl, C.sub.1-4 alkoxy, hydroxy and phenoxy, wherein each of R.sub.21 and R.sub.22 is independently hydrogen, C.sub.1-4 alkyl or C.sub.1-4 alkyl substituted by chloro, bromo, phenyl or hydroxy, and

- wherein each T.sub.Ia is independently --CO--X.sub.a or --SO.sub.2 --X.sub.a,
- wherein X.sub.a is --NR.sub.2 '--Q--NR.sub.3 'R.sub.4 ',
- wherein R.sub.2 ' is hydrogen or methyl,
- each of R.sub.3 ' and R.sub.4 ' is independently hydrogen, C.sub.1-6 alkyl, n-C.sub.2-3 -hydroxyalkyl or benzyl or
- R.sub.3 ' and R.sub.4 ' taken together and with the nitrogen atom to which they are joined are pyrrolidino, piperidino or morpholino, and
- Q is linear or branched C.sub.2-6 alkylene.
- 5. A compound according to claim 4, or an external salt thereof,
- wherein the two T.sub.Ia 's are identical.
- 6. A compound according to claim 5 having the formula ##STR88## or an external salt thereof, wherein R.sub.8 ' is hydrogen, methyl, methoxy or chloro,
- R.sub.13 ' is hydrogen, amino, acetamido or benzamido, and
- each X.sub.Ib is --CO--X.sub.b or --SO.sub.2 --X.sub.b,
- wherein X.sub.b is --NR.sub.2 '--Q--NR.sub.3 "R.sub.4 ",
- wherein R.sub.2 ' is hydrogen or methyl,
- each of R.sub.3 " and R.sub.4 " is independently hydrogen, C.sub.1-4 alkyl or hydroxyethyl or
- R.sub.3 " and R.sub.4 " taken together and with the nitrogen atom to which they are joined are piperidino or morpholino, and
- Q is linear or branched C.sub.2-6 alkylene,
- with the provisos that the two X.sub.Ib 's are identical and are in the 2,5- or 3,5-positions,
- with the proviso that each basic group is independently in free base, internal salt (maximum of one) or acid addition salt form.
- 7. A compound according to claim 6, or an external salt thereof,
- wherein each X.sub.Ib is --CO--NR.sub.2 '--(CH.sub.2).sub.s --NR.sub.3 "R.sub.4 ",
- wherein R.sub.2 ' is hydrogen or methyl,
- each of R.sub.3 " and R.sub.4 " is independently hydrogen, C.sub.1-4 alkyl or hydroxyethyl or
- R.sub.3 " and R.sub.4 " taken together and with the nitrogen atom to which they are joined are piperidino or morpholino, and
- s is 2 to 6, inclusive.
- 8. A compound according to claim 7, or an external salt thereof,
- wherein R.sub.8 ' is hydrogen, and
- each X.sub.Ib is --CO--NR.sub.2 '--(CH.sub.2).sub.t --NR.sub.3 "'R.sub.4 "',
- wherein R.sub.2 ' is hydrogen or methyl,
- each of R.sub.3 "' and R.sub.4 "' is independently methyl or ethyl, and
- t is 2 or 3.
- 9. A compound according to claim 8, or an external salt thereof, wherein R.sub.2 ' is hydrogen.
- 10. A compound according to claim 9 having the formula ##STR89##
- 11. An external salt according to claim 3 having the formula ##STR90## wherein R.sub.13 ' is hydrogen, amino, acetamido or benzamido, and each X.sub.Ie is --CO--NR.sub.2 '--(CH.sub.2).sub.t --N.sup..sym. (CH.sub.3).sub.3,
- wherein R.sub.2 ' is hydrogen or methyl, and t is 2 or 3,
- with the proviso that the positive charge of each cationic group is independently balanced by the negative charge of the --SO.sub.3.sup..crclbar. group of the molecule (maximum of one) or an external non-chromophoric anion.
- 12. An external salt according to claim 11 wherein each R.sub.2 ' is hydrogen.

- wherein each T.sub.b is independently --NR.sub.2 '--Q--NR.sub.3 "R.sub.4 ",
- wherein R.sub.2 ' is hydrogen or methyl,
- each of R.sub.3 " and R.sub.4 " is independently hydrogen, C.sub.1-4 alkyl or hydroxyethyl or
- R.sub.3 " and R.sub.4 " taken together and with the nitrogen atom to which they are joined are piperidino or morpholino, and
- Q is linear or branched C.sub.2-6 alkylene.
- 18. A compound according to claim 17, or an external salt thereof,
- wherein R.sub.9 ' is hydrogen, chloro, methyl, methoxy, acetamido or benzamido, and
- each T.sub.b is independently --NR.sub.2 '--(CH.sub.2).sub.s --NR.sub.3 "R.sub.4 ",
- wherein R.sub.2 ' is hydrogen or methyl,
- each of R.sub.3 " and R.sub.4 " is independently hydrogen, C.sub.1-4 alkyl or hydroxyethyl or
- R.sub.3 " and R.sub.4 " taken together and with the nitrogen atom to which they are joined are piperidino or morpholino, and
- s is 2 to 6, inclusive.
- 19. A compound according to claim 18, or an external salt thereof,
- wherein R.sub.9 ' is hydrogen, and
- each T.sub.b is independently --NR.sub.2 '--(CH.sub.2).sub.t --NR.sub.3 "'R.sub.4 "',
- wherein R.sub.2 ' is hydrogen or methyl,
- each of R.sub.3 "' and R.sub.4 "' is independently methyl or ethyl, and
- t is 2 or 3.
- 20. A compound according to claim 19, or an external salt thereof,
- wherein R.sub.1 ' is hydrogen, and
- each R.sub.2 ' is hydrogen.
- 21. The compound according to claim 20 having the formula ##STR94##

- wherein R.sub.9 ' is hydrogen, and

- R.sub.9 ' is hydrogen, chloro, methyl, methoxy, acetamido, benzamido, sulfamoyl or carbamoyl,
- R.sub.10 ' is hydrogen, chloro, methyl or methoxy, and
- each T.sub.b is independently --NR.sub.2 '--Q--NR.sub.3 "R.sub.4 " or --NR.sub.2 '--Q--N.sup..sym. R.sub.5 "R.sub.6 "R.sub.7 ',
- wherein R.sub.2 ' is hydrogen or methyl,
- each of R.sub.3 " and R.sub.4 " is independently hydrogen, C.sub.1-4 alkyl or hydroxyethyl,

- Q is linear or branched C.sub.2-6 alkylene.
- 26. A compound according to claim 25, or an external salt thereof,
- wherein R.sub.9 ' is hydrogen, chloro, methyl, methoxy, acetamido or benzamido,
- R.sub.10 ' is hydrogen, and
- each T.sub.b is independently --NR.sub.2 '--(CH.sub.2).sub.s --NR.sub.3 "R.sub.4 ",
- wherein R.sub.2 ' is hydrogen or methyl,
- each of R.sub.3 " and R.sub.4 " is independently hydrogen, C.sub.1-4 alkyl or hydroxyethyl or
- R.sub.3 " and R.sub.4 " taken together and with the nitrogen atom to which they are joined are piperidino or morpholino, and
- s is 2 to 6, inclusive.
- 27. A compound according to claim 26, or an external salt thereof,
- wherein each T.sub.b is independently --NR.sub.2 '--(CH.sub.2).sub.t --NR.sub.3 "'R.sub.4 "',
- wherein R.sub.2 ' is hydrogen or methyl,
- each of R.sub.3 "' and R.sub.4 "' is independently methyl or ethyl, and
- t is 2 or 3.
- 28. A compound according to claim 27, or an external salt thereof,
- wherein R.sub.1 ' is hydrogen, and
- each R.sub.2 ' is hydrogen.
- 29. The compound according to claim 28 having the formula ##STR96##
- 30. An external salt according to claim 24
- wherein R.sub.9 ' is hydrogen, chloro, methyl, methoxy, acetamido or benzamido,
- R.sub.10 ' is hydrogen, and
- each T.sub.b is independently --NR.sub.2 '--(CH.sub.2).sub.t --N.sup..sym. (CH.sub.3).sub.3,
- wherein R.sub.2 ' is hydrogen or methyl, and t is 2 or 3.
- 31. An external salt according to claim 30 wherein each R.sub.2 ' is hydrogen.
- 32. A method of dyeing a cellulosic substrate comprising applying thereto a compound according to claim 1, or an external salt thereof.
- 33. A method of dyeing leather comprising applying thereto a compound according to claim 1, or an external salt thereof.
