Claims
- 1. An engine comprising:
an engine casing defining a hollow piston cavity separated from an exhaust passage and an intake passage by a valve seat; a gas exchange valve member positioned adjacent said valve seat and being movable between an open position and a closed position, and defining an opening that opens into said hollow piston cavity; a needle valve member positioned in said gas exchange valve member adjacent a nozzle outlet and being moveable between an inject position and a blocked position; a port control valve member having a port control hydraulic surface and being mounted around said gas exchange valve member and being moveable between an intake position at which said exhaust passage is blocked, and an exhaust position at which said intake passage is blocked; and a pilot valve moveable between a first position at which said port control hydraulic surface is exposed to a source of high pressure fluid, and a second position at which said port control hydraulic surface is exposed to a source of low pressure fluid.
- 2. The engine of claim 1 wherein said port control valve member includes an opposing surface oriented in opposition to said port control hydraulic surface; and
a biaser in contact with said opposing surface.
- 3. The engine of claim 2 wherein said biaser is a pressurized fluid.
- 4. The engine of claim 1 wherein said pilot valve includes a PCV pilot valve member that is moveable between an up position and a down position, and said PCV pilot valve member includes a first hydraulic surface, and a second surface oriented in opposition to said first hydraulic surface; and
a control valve having an on position at which at least a portion of said first hydraulic surface is exposed to a source of high pressure fluid, and an off position at which said first hydraulic surface is exposed to a source of low pressure fluid.
- 5. The engine of claim 1 wherein said needle valve member includes a closing hydraulic surface; and
a needle control valve moveable between a stop position at which said closing hydraulic surface is exposed to a high pressure fluid, and a go position at which said closing hydraulic surface is exposed to a source of low pressure fluid.
- 6. The engine of claim 1 wherein said needle valve member is a portion of a hydraulically actuated fuel injector at least partially positioned in at least one of said port control valve member and said gas exchange valve member.
- 7. The engine of claim 1 wherein said pilot valve includes a PCV pilot valve member that is moveable between an up position and a down position, and said PCV pilot valve member includes a first hydraulic surface, and a second surface oriented in opposition to said first hydraulic surface; and
a portion of said first hydraulic surface being fluidly isolated from another portion of said first hydraulic surface when said PCV pilot valve member is in said up position.
- 8. The engine of claim 7 wherein said portion of said first hydraulic surface surrounds said another portion of said first hydraulic surface.
- 9. The engine of claim 7 wherein said second surface of said PCV pilot valve member is in contact with a biaser.
- 10. The engine of claim 9 wherein said biaser is a pressurized fluid.
- 11. The engine of claim 1 wherein said pilot valve includes a PCV pilot valve member that is moveable between an up position and a down position, and said PCV pilot valve member includes a first hydraulic surface, a control hydraulic surface, and a second surface oriented in opposition to said first hydraulic surface and said control hydraulic surface; and
said pilot valve further includes a ball valve member moveable between an A position at which said control hydraulic surface is exposed to a source of high pressure fluid, and a B position at which said control hydraulic surface is exposed to a source of low pressure fluid.
- 12. The engine of claim 1 wherein said needle valve member is a portion of a direct control needle valve;
a first electrical actuator operably coupled to said direct control needle valve; and a second electrical actuator operably coupled to said gas exchange valve member and said port control valve.
- 13. A valve comprising:
a valve body defining a first passage and a control passage; a valve member having a first hydraulic surface, a control hydraulic surface and a second surface, and being positioned in said valve body and being moveable between an up position and a down position; said first hydraulic surface being exposed to fluid pressure in said first passage when said valve member is in said down position, but only a portion of said first hydraulic surface being exposed to fluid pressure in said first passage when said valve member is in said up position; said control hydraulic surface being exposed to fluid pressure in said control passage; a source of low pressure fluid; a source of high pressure fluid; a biaser in contact with said second surface; said valve member being biased toward said down position when said valve member is in said down position and said first passage is fluidly connected to said source of high pressure fluid; said valve member being biased toward said down position when said valve member is in said up position, said first passage is fluidly connected to said source of high pressure fluid and said control passage is fluidly connected to said source of high pressure fluid; and said valve member being biased toward said up position when said valve member is in said up position, said first passage is fluidly connected to said source of high pressure fluid and said control passage is fluidly connected to said source of low pressure fluid.
- 14. The valve of claim 13 wherein said biaser is exposing said second surface to said source of high pressure fluid.
- 15. The valve of claim 13 wherein at least one of said valve body and said valve member define a through passage;
said through passage being one of opened and closed when said valve member is in said up position, and said through passage being an other one of opened and closed when in said down position.
- 16. An electronically controlled device comprising:
a body; a port control valve member movably positioned in said body; a gas exchange valve member; a fuel injector having a direct control needle valve and being at least partially positioned in said gas exchange valve member; a first electrical actuator operably coupled to said direct control needle valve; and a second electrical actuator operably coupled to said gas exchange valve member and said port control valve.
- 17. The device of claim 16 wherein said fuel injector is a hydraulically actuated fuel injector.
- 18. The device of claim 16 wherein said first electrical actuator moves a first ball valve member from a first seat to a second seat when activated; and
said second electrical actuator moves a second ball valve member from a third seat to a fourth seat when activated.
- 19. The device of claim 16 wherein said port control valve is a hydraulically actuated port control valve.
- 20. The device of claim 16 wherein said gas exchange valve member is a hydraulically actuated gas exchange valve member.
