Claims
- 1. An improved mortar having a barrel, a cover and a base plate, said cover having one end that attaches to said barrel and another end that attaches to said base plate, said cover having a blind hole therein coaxial with said barrel, said blind hole having an open end at said one end of said case, said base plate having a top, a bottom, a center and sides, said top having an attachment means for attaching said other end of said cover, said mortar comprising:
- (a) a hollow sheath slidably positioned in said blind hole, said hollow sheath movable between a rest position and a firing position, said hollow sheath having an outer surface and an inner surface, said outer surface having a toothed rack mounted thereon, said inner surface having a pin mounted therein;
- (b) a spring mounted in said hollow sheath towards said other end of said blind hole;
- (c) a hammer slidably positioned in said hollow sheath, said hammer operated on by said spring, said hammer having a groove therein, said pin of said hollow sheath positioned in said groove of said hammer;
- (d) a first means for holding said hammer in a cocked position when said hollow sheath is in said rest position, said first means mounted in said cover;
- (e) a drive pinion mounted in said cover, said pinion meshing with said toothed rack thereby effecting movement of said hollow sheath between said rest position and said firing position;
- (f) a second means attached to said pinion to release said first means when said hollow sheath moves from said rest position to said firing position;
- (g) a firing pin member, said firing pin member movable with said hollow sheath between said rest position and said firing position;
- (h) an even number of radial ridged members attached to said bottom of said base plate and extending radially at equal angles from said center of said base plate to said sides of said base plate; and
- (i) every other one of said even number of radial ridged members being forked thereby producing a first and a second branched member, the fork occurring at a point closer to said sides of said base plate than said center of said base plate, said first branched member being parallel to a first non-forked radial ridged member, said first non-forked radial ridged member being adjacent to said first branched member and said second branched member being parallel to a second non-forked radial ridged member, said second non-forked radial ridged member being adjacent to said second branched member.
- 2. The improved mortar of claim 1 wherein said attachment means comprises:
- (a) a support means attached to said top of said base plate, said support means having a spherically shaped hollow therein for accomodating a mortar sealing ball;
- (b) a ring joined to said support such that between said ring and said support a circular hollow is defined; and
- (c) a claw member slidably mounted in said circular hollow, said claw for holding said mortar sealing ball when said mortar sealing ball is in said spherically shaped hollow.
- 3. The improved mortar of claim 1 wherein said top of said base plate is shaped like a spherical cap.
- 4. The improved mortar of claim 1 wherein a reinforced ridge is fixed to said radial ridges, said reinforcing ridges being positioned perpendicularly to said radial ridges.
- 5. An improved base plate for a mortar, said base plate comprising:
- (a) a platform having a top, a bottom, a center, sides and an attachment means for attaching said mortar to said platform, said attachment means attached to said top of said platform;
- (b) an even number of radial ridged members attached to said bottom of said platform and extending radially at equal angles from said center of said platform to said sides of said platform; and
- (c) every other one of said even number of radial ridged members being forked thereby producing a first and a second branched member, the fork occurring at a point closer to said sides of said platform than said center of said platform, said first branched member being parallel to a first non-forked radial ridged member, said first non-forked radial ridged member being adjacent to said first branched member and said second branched member being parallel to a second non-forked radial ridged member, said second non-forked radial ridged member being adjacent to said second branched member.
- 6. An improved base plate for a mortar comprising:
- (a) a platform having an upper and a lower face and a center;
- (b) locking means for locking a ball of a mortar barrel, said locking means mounted on said upper face of said platform;
- (c) an even number of radial ridged members attached to said lower face of said platform at equal angles and extending radially from said center of said platform; and
- (d) every other one of said radial ridged members being forked beyond the mi-point of said radial ridged members into two branched members, each of said two branched members being parallel to an adjacent non-forked radial ridged member.
- 7. The improved mortar of claim 6 wherein a reinforced ridge is fixed to said radial ridges, said reinforcing ridges being positioned perpendicularly to said radial ridges.
