Claims
- 1. A wall system comprising:
a plurality of blocks, each of said blocks comprising:
a front face; a rear face; a top surface; a bottom surface; and, side surfaces, with each side surface having a vertically oriented groove configured to receive a portion of an elongated beam; an elongated beam comprising a bracket engaging portion and a block engaging portion, the block engaging portion configured and arranged to operatively connect said plurality of blocks together to form a wall; and, a bracket, the bracket comprising a beam engaging portion configured and arranged to slidingly retain the bracket-engaging portion of the elongated beam, the bracket attachable to a support structure; wherein a plurality of blocks may be operatively connected to said support structure and movable in a generally vertical direction with respect thereto.
- 2. The wall system of claim 1, further comprising at least one sill configured and arranged to rest on top of said wall in close proximity to said support structure.
- 3. The wall system of claim 1, further comprising a sealing element, the sealing element configured and arranged to provide a transition between said wall and said support structure and to effectively prevent material from being introduced therebetween.
- 4. The wall system of claim 1, further comprising a horizontally oriented base, with the base having a surface configured and arranged to support said wall.
- 5. The wall system of claim 3, further comprising at least one footing configured and arranged to support said base.
- 6. A block for use in constructing a wall, the block comprising:
a front surface; a rear face spaced from said front face by a distance defining the depth of said block; a top surface; a bottom surface spaced from said top surface by a distance defining the height of said block; opposing side surfaces spaced from each other by a distance defining the width of said block, with each said opposing side surface having a groove shaped to receive a portion of an elongated beam; the block having a substantially vertically oriented aperture, the aperture in general coplanar alignment with the grooves of the opposing side surfaces, the aperture configured to receive a portion an elongated beam; wherein,
a plurality of blocks may be assembled into a wall and retained in position by an elongated beam.
- 7. The block of claim 6, further comprising a slot, wherein the slot extends from the rear face to the aperture.
- 8. The block of claim 6, wherein the grooves of said opposing side surfaces extend substantially from the top surface to the bottom surface.
- 9. The block of claim 6, wherein the vertically oriented aperture extends from the top surface to the bottom surface.
- 10. The block of claim 6, wherein at least one of said top, bottom, and side surfaces includes a channel that is configured and arranged to intercept moisture traversing from the front surface toward the rear face of the block, and to direct said moisture in a predetermined direction that does not intersect the rear face.
- 11. The block of claim 6, wherein the front surface further comprises a splitting recess.
- 12. The block of claim 6, wherein the front surface further comprises at least one marginal edge having a predetermined cross-sectional profile.
- 13. A block for use in constructing a wall of the type that is held together by at least one elongated beam, the block comprising:
a front surface; a rear face spaced from said front face by a distance defining the depth of said block; a top surface; a bottom surface spaced from said top surface by a distance defining the height of said block; side surfaces spaced from each other by a distance defining the width of said block, with each said side surface having a groove shaped to receive a portion of an elongated beam; the block further comprising at least one channel that is configured and arranged to intercept moisture traversing from the front surface toward the rear face of the block and to direct the moisture in a predetermined direction that does not intersect the rear face; whereby a wall constructed with a plurality of said blocks is able to internally capture and dispose of moisture that may find its way between adjacent blocks.
- 14. A block for use in constructing a wall of the type that is held together by at least one elongated beam, the block comprising:
a front surface; a rear face spaced from said front face by a distance defining the depth of said block; a top surface; a bottom surface spaced from said top surface by a distance defining the height of said block; opposed side surfaces spaced from each other by a distance defining the width of said block, with each said opposed side surface having a groove shaped to receive a portion of an elongated beam; with at least one of the opposing grooves further comprising a channel that is configured and arranged to intercept moisture traversing from the front surface toward the rear face of the block and to direct the moisture in a predetermined direction that does not intersect the rear face; whereby a wall constructed with a plurality of said blocks is able to internally capture and dispose of moisture that may find its way between adjacent blocks.
- 15. A block for use in constructing a wall of the type that is held together by at least one elongated beam, the block comprising:
a front surface; a rear face spaced from said front face by a distance defining the depth of said block; a top surface; a bottom surface spaced from said top surface by a distance defining the height of said block; opposed side surfaces spaced from each other by a distance defining the width of said block, with each said opposed side surface having a groove shaped to receive a portion of an elongated beam; with the rear surface further comprising at least one vertically oriented recess adjacent one of the opposed side surfaces, the recess arranged and configured to effectively reduce the depth of the block at one of its opposing sides; thereby reducing damage that may occur when the block is manipulated during manufacture and use.
- 16. A block for use with an elongated beam, the block comprising:
a front face comprising two front face segments, with the two front face segments arranged to form an angle therebetween; a rear face comprising two rear face segments, the rear face spaced from said front face by a predetermined distance; a top surface; a bottom surface spaced from said top surface by a distance defining the height of said block; and, side surfaces, with each side surface having a groove shaped to accept a portion of the elongated support beam; wherein the block may be operatively connected to at least one other block by the elongated beam.
- 17. The block of claim 16, wherein the angle formed by the two front face segments is in the range of about 15 to 165 degrees.
- 18. A bracket for use in conjunction with a wall of the type comprising a plurality of blocks operatively connected together by an elongated beam, the bracket comprising: a structure engaging portion and a beam engaging portion, with the bracket configured and arranged to operatively connect a wall of blocks, which are connected to each other by an elongated beam, to a structure in a predetermined position relative thereto.
- 19. The bracket of claim 18, wherein said structure engaging portion is generally L-shaped.
- 20. The bracket of claim 18, wherein the beam engaging portion is configured and arranged to slidingly receive a portion of the elongated beam.
- 21. The bracket of claim 18, wherein the t beam engaging portion comprises an aperture.
- 22. The bracket of claim 18, wherein the beam engaging portion is generally L-shaped.
- 23. The bracket of claim 18, wherein the beam engaging portion includes a coupling element configured and arranged to confront a portion of the elongated beam.
- 24. An elongated beam for use in operatively connecting a plurality of blocks together in a vertical, coplanar orientation, the beam comprising:
a block engaging portion and a structure engaging portion, the beam configured and arranged so that when the beam is operatively connected to a block, the block engaging portion of the beam is in general coplanar alignment with respect to the block and the structure engaging portion is in general collateral alignment with respect to the block.
- 25. The beam of claim 24, wherein the block engaging portion comprises a laterally extending rib.
- 26. The support beam of claim 25, wherein the laterally extending rib further comprises a flange.
- 27. The support beam of claim 24, wherein the block engaging portion comprises a laterally extending rib having at least one stay extending therefrom.
- 28. The support beam of claim 24, wherein the block engaging portion comprises a generally laterally extending resilient member.
- 29. The support beam of claim 28, wherein the generally laterally extending resilient member further comprises an aperture, with the aperture extending along the resilient member in a longitudinal direction.
- 30. The support beam of claim 24, wherein the structure engaging portion comprises a generally laterally extending rib.
- 31. The support beam of claim 30, wherein the laterally extending rib of the structure engaging portion further comprises a coupling element.
- 32. The support beam of claim 24, wherein the block engaging portion and the structure engaging portion are spaced from each other by a web.
- 33. A sealing element for effectively preventing the passage of material between a block of a wall construction and a structure to which the wall construction is operatively connected, the sealing element comprising a body having a sealing panel and an attachment portion, with the attachment portion configured and arranged to be inserted and seated between the block and the structure such that as the attachment portion is seated, the sealing panel is brought into contact with the block and the structure thereby effectively preventing passage of material therebetween.
- 34. The sealing element of claim 33, wherein the attachment portion comprises a resilient strip.
- 35. The sealing element of claim 33, wherein the resilient strip further comprises a bead for increasing the gripping capability of the attachment portion.
- 36. The sealing element of claim 33, wherein the sealing panel comprises two resilient strips.
- 37. The sealing element of claim 33, wherein the attachment portion comprises two resilient strips, with each resilient strip extending from the sealing panel in a generally radial direction and each resilient strip configured and arranged to exert a normal force against either the block or the structure when the sealing element is installed between the block and the structure.
