Claims
- 1. In an electro-mechanical motion control system having at least one inductively controlled multi-phase motor with at least one coil corresponding to each phase and having current programming circuitry for providing desired current waveforms to the coils of the multi-phase motor and having selecting means for selecting the desired motor coil or coils, a velocity-sensitive circuit for providing current, comprising:
- (a) electronic switching means, having a first main electrode connected to the current programming circuitry, a second main electrode and a control electrode;
- (b) charging means, connected to the control electrode and connected to a voltage source; and
- (c) a timing circuit, connected to the second main electrode, for enabling the electronic switching means to conduct current through its first main electrode in an amount dependent on the voltage on the charging means for a predetermined period of time.
- 2. The velocity-sensitive circuit of claim 1 wherein the electronic switching means comprise a transistor, the charging means comprise a capacitor and the timing circuit comprises a monostable one-shot circuit.
- 3. In a printer mechanism having a control system for moving the printhead of a printer by translating the rotation of an inductively controlled multi-phase motor to a linear motion, the motor having at least one coil associated with each phase, and the control system having current programming circuitry, a velocity-sensitive circuit for providing current, comprising:
- (a) electronic switching means, having a first main electrode connected to the current programming circuitry, a second main electrode and a control electrode;
- (b) charging means, connected to the control electrode and connected to a voltage source; and
- (c) a timing circuit, connected to the second main electrode, for enabling the electronic switching means to conduct current through its first main electrode in accordance with the amount of charge of the charging means for a predetermined period of time.
- 4. The velocity-sensitive circuit of claim 3 wherein the electronic switching means comprise a transistor, the charging means comprise a capacitor and the timing circuit comprises a monostable one-shot circuit.
- 5. An electro-mechanical motion control system having at least one inductively controlled multi-phase motor with at least one coil corresponding to each phase, for providing desired mechanical motion, comprising:
- (a) drive circuit means including current programming circuitry, for providing current of a desired waveform and amplitude to the multi-phase motor;
- (b) position sensing means for providing an electrical signal indicative of the angular position of the multi-phase motor;
- (c) selecting means for selecting at least one phase of the multi-phase motor and electrically connecting the corresponding motor coil to the drive circuit means to cause the motor to rotate either in the forward or reverse direction; and
- (d) dynamic braking means connected to receive and responsive to the indicia signal, and connected to the selecting means to cause the selecting means to select at least one phase that lags the previously selected phase and to electrically connect the corresponding motor coil to the drive circuit means for a prescribed period of time, thereby providing the motor with the required retrotorque.
- 6. In a printer mechanism, a control system for moving the printhead of a printer by translating the rotation of an inductively controlled multi-phase motor to a linear motion, the motor having at least one coil associated with each phase, comprising:
- (a) drive circuit means including current programming circuitry, for providing current of a desired waveform and amplitude to the multi-phase motor;
- (b) position sensing means for providing an electrical indicia signal indicative of the angular position of the multiphase motor;
- (c) selecting means for selecting at least one phase of the multi-phase motor and electrically connecting the corresponding motor coil to the drive circuit means to cause the motor to rotate either in the forward or reverse direction, thereby causing the printhead to move linearly, either right or left; and
- (d) dynamic braking means connected to receive and responsive to the indicia signal, and connected to the selecting means to cause the selecting means to select at least one phase that lags the previously selected phase and to electrically connect the corresponding motor coil to the drive circuit means for a prescribed period of time, thereby providing the motor with the required retrotorque.
