Claims
- 1. A motion-picture camera for alternatively exposing a silent film contained in a cassette of a first type and a sound film contained in a cassette of a second type differing in shape from that of said first type, the film being accessible with either type of cassette at an upstream location for illumination and with said second type of cassette also at a downstream location for sound recording, comprising:
- a casing forming a cassette-receiving chamber and an image gate opening into said chamber;
- first feed means in said chamber engageable with the film of an inserted cassette at said upstream location for intermittently transporting said film past said image gate;
- sound-recording means in said chamber positioned for co-operation with the film of an inserted cassette of said second type at said downstream location;
- second feed means in said chamber engageable with the film of an inserted cassette of said second type at said downstream location for transporting the film past said sound-recording means at a substantially constant speed;
- drive means for actuating said first and second feed means, said drive means including a motor operatively coupled with said first feed means;
- sensing means in said casing for detecting the presence of a cassette of said second type in said chamber;
- first speed-regulating means for stabilizing the operating speed of said motor with a cassette of said first type;
- second speed-regulating means for controlling said drive means to maintain a substantially constant length of film between said upstream and downstream locations with a cassette of said second type; and
- switchover means responsive to said sensing means for activating said first speed-regulating means to the exclusion of said second speed-regulating means in the absence of a cassette of said second type and for activating said second speed-regulating means to the exclusion of said first speed-regulating means in the presence of a cassette of said second type.
- 2. A camera as defined in claim 1 wherein said first speed-regulating means comprises a contrifugal governor permanently coupled with said motor and contact means engageable by said governor in an energizing circuit for said motor, said contact means being displaceable by said switchover means beyond reach of said governor in the presence of a cassette of said second type.
- 3. A camera as defined in claim 1 wherein said second feed means comprises a continuously rotatable capstan and a pinch roller normally spaced from said capstan, said pinch roller being coupled with said sensing means for displacement toward said capstan in the presence of a cassette of said second type for clamping the film thereof between said pinch roller and said capstan.
- 4. A camera as defined in claim 1 wherein a cassette of said second type has lateral extensions missing in a cassette of said first type, said second feed means being straddled by said extensions upon insertion of a cassette of said second type, said sensing means comprising a pair of feelers disposed on opposite sides of said second feed means for contact with said extensions.
- 5. A camera as defined in claim 4 wherein said feelers have coplanar spring-loaded webs normally projecting into said chamber, said webs being engageable with an edge of an inserted cassette of said first type for holding the cassette in position within said chamber.
- 6. A camera as defined in claim 1 wherein said casing is provided with indicating means controlled by said sensing means for signaling the type of cassette inserted into said chamber.
- 7. A camera as defined in claim 6 wherein said casing is provided with an access opening for connecting a microphone to said sound-recording means, said indicating means including a shutter blocking said access opening in the absence of a cassette of said second type.
