Claims
- 1. A method for braking an alternating current electric motor comprising the steps of:
- sensing the polarity of the voltage of a source of alternating electricity;
- periodically sampling the polarity of the back emf voltage induced in the motor;
- periodically applying the electricity to the motor in response to the voltage of the source and the back emf voltage being of opposite polarities;
- detecting a predetermined sequence in the samples of the polarity of the back emf voltage; and
- stopping the application of electricity to the motor, in response to detecting the predetermined sequence.
- 2. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein said predetermined sequence is the polarity of the back emf voltage remaining unchanged for a given plurality of consecutive samples.
- 3. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein said predetermined sequence is the polarity of the back emf voltage remaining unchanged for a predetermined number of consecutive samples followed by a transition in the polarity of the back emf voltage.
- 4. The method as recited in claim 3 wherein the step of stopping the application of electricity to the motor occurs for a predetermined interval after the transition occurs in the polarity of the back emf voltage.
- 5. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the step of detecting comprises:
- detecting when the electricity is applied to the motor during every cycle of the alternating electricity;
- then detecting when the polarity of the back emf voltage remains unchanged for a predetermined number of samples; and
- then detecting when a transition occurs in the polarity of the back emf voltage.
- 6. The method as recited in claim 5 wherein the step stopping the application of electricity occurs a given interval after the transition is detected.
- 7. A method for stopping an electric motor comprising the steps of:
- (a) sensing the polarity of the voltage from a source of alternating electricity;
- periodically sensing the voltage induced in a winding of the motor by a back electromotive force, which sensing produces a series of voltage samples;
- initially applying electricity from the source to the motor in response to the polarity of the voltage from the source being opposite to the polarity of back emf voltage induced in a winding of the motor, which application of electricity produces a negative torque in the motor;
- detecting when the electricity is applied to the motor during every cycle of the alternating electricity from the source;
- when the electricity is applied to the motor during every cycle of the electricity from the source, thereafter applying electricity to the motor during every cycle of the alternating electricity regardless of the polarity of the back emf voltage induced in a winding of the motor;
- detecting a predetermined pattern in the series of voltage samples; and
- in response to detecting the predetermined pattern, terminating the application of electricity to the motor.
- 8. The method as recited in claim 7 wherein the step of sensing the polarity of the voltage from the source is performed only when electricity is not being applied to the motor.
- 9. The method as recited in claim 7 wherein the predetermined sequence is the polarity of the back emf voltage remaining unchanged for a given plurality of consecutive samples.
- 10. The method as recited in claim 7 wherein said step of detecting a predetermined pattern is performed only after the electricity is detected as being applied to the motor during every cycle of the electricity from the source.
- 11. The method as recited in claim 7 wherein the predetermined pattern is the polarity of the back emf induced voltage remaining unchanged for a predetermined number of consecutive samples followed by a change in the polarity of the back emf induced voltage.
- 12. The method as recited in claim 7 wherein the step of terminating the application of electricity occurs a given interval after the predetermined pattern is detected.
- 13. The method as recited in claim 12 further including deriving the given interval from the rate at which the motor decreases speed.
