Claims
- 1. A mechanical brake assembly, comprising: a clevis, a brake band, an actuating member, and a connector; said clevis including a body portion, including a base component at the bottom thereof having an element thereon adapted for abutment against an underlying support member, and a pair of upstanding, transversely spaced legs having mounting means pivotably mounting said actuating member on a first transverse axis spaced upwardly of said base component, and mounting said brake band on a further upwardly spaced transverse axis, said connector operatively connecting said actuating member to said brake band and being disposed in the space between said legs; said clevis also including a hooking portion in the form of an upstanding finger component attached to said base component and forming an upwardly opening recess with said body portion adapted to receive and engage a stationary element inserted thereinto, to thereby limit upward movement of said clevis, said finger component having a recess-defining surface which extends at a downwardly convergent acute angle to the plane in which said axes are included.
- 2. A machine combination, including: a machine having a bed with a supporting surface, structure providing a stationary element spaced from said supporting surface, and a member that is rotatable in forward and rearward directions; and an assembly including a mount having a body portion and a hooking portion, and at least one part mounted on said mount and operatively connected to said rotatable member so as to be subject to the rotational forces thereof, said body portion of said mount having means mounting said part thereon, and said mount normally being freely seated upon said bed with a base element of said body portion thereof abutted against said supporting surface, said hooking portion extending from said body portion and forming therewith a recess opening in a direction away from said supporting surface and aligned with said element of said structure, said hooking portion being adapted to engage said stationary element, inserted into said recess, so as to limit movement of said mount away from said bed, and normally being disengaged therefrom; whereby the force of said rotatable member, transmitted by said one part, will urge said mount against said supporting surface in said forward direction of rotation and will displace it therefrom in said rearward direction thereof, said hooking portion serving to limit such displacement by engagement with said element of said structure.
- 3. The combination of claim 2 wherein said assembly includes another part operatively connected to said rotating member, wherein said base element is at the bottom of said body portion, wherein said mounting means mounts said another part for pivotable movement about a first axis spaced upwardly from said base element and extending transversely through said body portion, and mounts said one part on a second transverse axis spaced above said first axis, and wherein said hooking portion provides a surface, cooperatively defining said recess, which extends at a downwardly convergent acute angle to the plane in which said axes are included, said hooking portion thereby being adapted, by engagement of said stationary element of said machine structure on said surface thereof, to restrain said mount against lateral movement toward said rotatable member, and thereby to restrain turning of said mount about said first axis.
- 4. The combination of claim 3 wherein said one part is a brake band operatively connected to said rotatable member for the application of retarding force thereto, and wherein said another part is an actuating member operatively connected to said rotatable member and to said one member for the receipt of force from said rotating member and transmission thereof to said brake band, said assembly thereby automatically enabling the application of retarding force to said rotatable member, the restraint of said mount against lateral movement, by engagement between said stationary element and said hooking portion, serving to prevent pivoting of said mount and thereby to avoid the imposition of excessive retarding force upon said rotatable member rotating in said rearward direction.
- 5. The combination of claim 4 wherein said mount is in the form of a clevis, with said body portion including a base component, having said base element thereon, and a pair of transversely spaced leg components extending therefrom; wherein said hooking portion comprises a finger component attached to said base component and extending therefrom in the same general direction as said leg components; and wherein said mounting means comprises transversely aligned circular apertures in said legs, for mounting said actuating member, and transversely aligned arcuate indentations formed into upper margins of said legs, for mounting said brake band, said brake band having semicircular elements seated in said indentations for limited pivotal movement of said brake band on said mount.
