Claims
- 1. A mouthpiece (11) for use in an inhaler for a particulate medicament, the mouthpiece having:
an inlet (13) and an outlet (14) for the particulate medicament; a number of abutments (16) which extend across the mouthpiece (11) and which are arranged in a staggered configuration such that, in use, medicament agglomerations are caused to break up as the medicament passes through the mouthpiece; characterised in that the abutments (16) are blades having an elongate cross section in the direction of travel of the medicament from the inlet (13) to the outlet (14) and around which, in use, medicament is caused to pass.
- 2. A mouthpiece (11) according to claim 1, wherein the blades (16) are provided with leading (18) and/or trailing (9) edges which are sharp.
- 3. A mouthpiece (11) according to either claim 1, wherein the blades (16) are arranged in columns, from the inlet (13) towards the outlet (14).
- 4. A mouthpiece (11) according to claim 1, wherein the longer axes of the cross-sections of the blades (18) are parallel to the air flow through the mouthpiece (11).
- 5. A mouthpiece (11) according to claim 1, wherein the longer axes of the cross-sections of adjacent blades (16) in the same column are separated, in a direction perpendicular to the planes in which the blades lie, by between 1.5 mm and 2.5 mm.
- 6. A mouthpiece (11) according to claim 5, wherein the longer axes of the blades (16) are separated by between 1.8 mm and 2.2 mm.
- 7. A mouthpiece (11) according to claim 1, wherein the longer dimension of the cross-sections of the blades (16) is between 3.8 mm and 4.8 mm.
- 8. A mouthpiece (11) according to claim 7, wherein the longer dimension of the blades (16) is between 4.1 mm and 4.5 mm.
- 9. A mouthpiece (11) according to claim 1, wherein the shorter axes of the cross-sections of blades (16) in adjacent columns are separated, in the direction of the air flow, by between 4 mm and 5 mm.
- 10. A mouthpiece (11) according to claim 9, wherein the shorter axes of the blades (16) are separated by 4.5 mm.
- 11. A mouthpiece (11) according to claim 1, wherein the shorter dimension of the cross-sections of the blades (16) is between 0.6 mm and 1.2 mm.
- 12. A mouthpiece (11) according to claim 11, wherein the shorter dimension of the blades (16) is 0.9 mm.
- 13. A mouthpiece (11) according to claim 1, wherein particle deflectors (20) project from the inner surface of the wall of the mouthpiece (11).
- 14. A method of dispersing particulate medicament using a mouthpiece (11) according to claim 1, wherein deagglomeration is caused by one or more of the following: medicament collision with one or more blades (16), medicament collision with a wall of the mouthpiece (11), collisions between medicament particles and a shearing action of the air as it passes over agglomerations of medicament.
